Honestly behind only Breath of the Wild and Red Dead Redemption 2 in terms of open world design. I felt the story and progression left could have been better though.

The main XC games and X are very different, X is more of a true sandbox while those are more of a limited open world. 2's world gradually opens up as it goes and you get more of the sense of scale. It also improves dramatically and gets less booby, those first few hours have a lot to answer for.

Ive said it many times but x has maybe the best video game story of all time. The story thats told about different races of alien cohabiting the same planet is incredibly told through the side quests and npcs.

The main story about how to cook tatsu is very bad though.

There's something nerve racking and exciting about booking it into territories with high level enemies just to plant a FrontierNav probe.

I still remember that one lv40+ (or whatever) enemy that just stands still on a really tiny bridge blocking off a portion of Primordia. I died so many times trying to run past it.

Just did chapter 3 where you have to book it past all these level 30+ enemies in Noctilum.

It's super smart game design, imo. Before the game was carefully guiding you through areas with properly level enemies then it quickly reaches you how often you'll be having to traverse super dangerous areas to get to your goal.
