Board 8 > Star Wars: Fallen Order is the most derivative game I've played in a while.

The combat and respawning mechanic is Dark Souls, the platforming is Uncharted, the 'learn new abilities to open new paths through the environment' is Metroid Prime, and pretty sure the wall running is exactly the same mechanic as it was in Prince of Persia.

It's also fun though, so I don't think I can complain!

watching videos the lightsaber just looks like it would feel like playing with a plastic stick without it doesn't dismember the everloving crap out of everything it touches

Things die quick if you parry a lot (and a lot of normal enemies get cut in half), and doing so is already really strong. It's obviously weaker than a canon lightsaber would be but I don't think you can really make a satisfying combat system where everything dies in one hit.

The combat takes more specifically from Sekiro with the parry focus but yeah it's super derivative but still fun. Also has a pretty likable cast.

I really appreciate how we started this decade with a weird, niche, widely-dismissed action RPG slowly spreading through positive word of mouth on message boards and YouTube and we end the decade on a Star Wars game directly influenced by that game.

but I also think this game is miserable and might have the worst Souls-like combat I've ever played

Fallen Order reminded me a lot of Darksiders in that there's not an original bone in its body - and yet somehow it works ridiculously well! It was to the point that I can't wait to see more of it in the inevitable sequel, because there's enough obvious improvements there that it could easily go from "really solid Star Wars game" to a potential GotY contender with just some basic sequel stuff.

All of what you said is undeniably true, in addition to being pretty unpolished technically, but it all just hits the right notes in my head. The platforming is so simple and basic, and yet its so satisfying to do every time. Fallen Order is a deeply flawed game, but its my favorite Dark Souls adjacent game Ive played. Maybe thats owed to the Star Wars trappings. I would love to see Jedi 2 be a bit more ambitious in its design, lose Cal, and clean up all the technical shortcomings. Still top 3 of the year, tho!

I wouldn't call it amazing so far, but I'm definitely enjoying my time with it. Think what prevents it from hitting that level where it becomes special is that exploring for goodies mostly gets you cosmetics and little else. So many ponchos.

Ponchos are truly the worst, I feel that, I have not worn a single one of them, because they all look so bad! I wish he had entirely different outfits to collect, not just ponchos or color changes of his default.

The ponchos would be more acceptable if they had stats.

Hilts are a bit better but you don't really see the saber closely except for when you're modifying it.

I think it's easier to forgive this game for copy/pasting since it's the first good star wars game we've had in about a decade. It's a good first step but if the next few games are still doing the same thing then I'mma be disappointed.

I'm 71% done and just had the best hour ive had with the game, a sequence of events that id say would put it on my top moments of the year. Theres another moment earlier in the game where I was on the edge of my seat. This game has some very high notes and the lows aren't the worst.

Each planet feels alive in its own way which I adore. This is a game journalists worst nightmare since it does nothing original and instead takes as much as they can from other titles. Its like when Far Cry 5 came out, the games good but it didnt do anything new or artsy so hacks started writing about the game is soulless trash. Yeah if your in this boat stay away from this game and play a walking sim.

The biggest cons for me in this game
-sliding sections blow
-The stim pack upgrades are a god send, as are the force/life meter upgrades. But everything else is just a litter of secrets that unlock cosmetics I don't care about. If I wasn't a trophy hunter I wouldn't even bother after beating the game to go do everything its that pointless.

If traversing the world was more enjoyable I think I would have gotten all of the chests but not having a way to fast travel or even a "Return to Ship" button makes it way too much of a chore.

The sliding sections do suck except for one on Kashyyk that's very cool the first time you do it.

What difficulty is everyone playing on. I started on Grand Master, and went down to Master just to check it out. The parry window is INSANELY generous even on Master, not that I'm complaining!

I got it for Christmas, currently playing through on Grandmaster and it's fun enough (currently visiting Kashyyyk for the second time), but agreed. It's also really poorly optimised on original Xbox One. Constant texture pop-in, characters sliding in T-poses, graphical glitches during cutscenes, freezing and two hard crashes so far and it's just really janky overall. I'll probably finish it and then see how close I am to getting 100%. The fact that it doesn't track the crates that need a Scomp Link early on is so frustrating. And yeah, the collectibles are really boring. It stinks of EA saying 'we're not putting microtransactions in this game, so you're not getting the budget to do elaborate cosmetics'.

I'd probably put it in the same ballpark as Days Gone. Solid game and does what it does well enough, but nothing more. I'd definitely be interested in a sequel though.
