In 1492 Columbus sailed near here and took a poo.
He whipped the natives and beat them too.
He was a pedophile and would rape you.
He cut off ears and body parts.
He and his crew, they had no hearts.
So don't celibate this evil man.
He doesn't deserve even one fan.

He never did.

He did in the sense that it generated a quantum sea change in the destiny of the continent.

It doesn't really matter if the natives or the vikings got here first, or potentially the Portuguese or Chinese as well depending on which theories you ascribe to, the fact remains that his journey is the one that opened the continent to Europe as a whole for centuries to come.

"Discovery" doesn't exclusively mean being the first person to find something only.

Best video on Columbus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEw8c6TmzGg&vl=en

I watched the video. I will say he tries to be unbiased for the most part, but I also find his arguments fairly pointless and that his over all conclusion is the same (Columbus should be celebrated), so I do not really see the point of the video.

His arguments seem to break down to mostly the following:

Nobody is all good or all evil, it's not just black or white, but about shades of grey.

My answer is simple, you don't need to celebrate someone who is a shade of grey, and the same can be said of Hitler. I am quite glad we do not have a day celebrating him.

There were much worse people, who committed worse crimes than Columbus.

While some people may claim that Columbus was satan incarnate and the worst person in existence, that was not, and still is not a popular or well known belief. People just think he wasn't a great person, who committed some atrocities and certainly should not be celebrated. Yes there was worse people, there still are. You probably know a few of em, but maybe...you don't know you know them.

Columbus's words were taken out of context and/or mis-translated.

Other then directly refuting a few previous videos, I don't think this was a main reason most people are not a huge fan, and also, I don't think most people either love or hate him, I honestly don't care about him one way or another, nor did most people I know in my life.

There are tons of specific things I could go on about, such as his ties to creating sex slaves, and pedophilia etc, but it would become extremely long. I'd instead just like to state that considering how long his actions have been lauded and exaggerated in a good way, it makes a sort of sense that the reverse is happening more recently. It's backlash for having a person who shouldn't have been a hero in the first place, thrown in the faces of many people who perhaps don't feel like they made out that well when North America was colonized.

In the end, people saying Columbus didn't discover America are (usually) talking about North America, which is true, and that was I believe mentioned in the video as well. I do not personally see any reason his actions should have made him a hero to the level where we actually have a Columbus day in this country, it doesn't make sense, there are better American Heros we could celebrate for sure. What is worse, we are an integrated nation including people who could, and probably do, take affront to celebrating him, which makes absolutely no sense and is in extremely bad taste.

Inventing devices that have to be specifically constructed isn't really comparable to discovering a land mass. America has existed for longer than humans. Discovering it means finding it, and anyone finding it after the first person has done so is late to the party. Wheels or drums, however, didn't exist until somebody came up with a way to construct and use them.

You're putting a lot of effort into a stance that means nothing when you realize nobody is calling him or celebrating him as a hero.

Also Godwin's Law? Reverse Godwin's? Either way you dignified Hitler to vilify Columbus, lmao.

This implies there was a party going on before Columbus, which there wasn't. The Bitcoin analogy in that youtube video is spot on for countering this silly argument.

There were people here. As far as mere discovery goes, that's all it takes to qualify as a party.

Even theories of the Egyptians and Greeks coming to the Americas back in their eras, so BC era of humans.

Though Native populations are still probably the first ones to make it.
