Everyone knows Ol Punny was poor (hell still is) so when we had games, we were thankful. We played the shit out of them, who the hell knew when we were gonna get another one.

My brother had a side job and he bought Kirby's Adventure for the family and I actually remember making it a mission to find every secret. I remember that was my first 100%. This influenced how I played games from then on, always get everything.

buuuuut, I guess I can't apply this mentality anymore

I'm an adult, I either am too tired from real life, or just don't have any time at all to do this

This is why I picked up Overwatch and why I ran with it so much. Its either to get a few matches in and it'll be like 10-20 minutes tops. But I've always felt Overwatch is a bit destructive. Its a time sink, the time I'm wasting isn't going towards anything. Its not going towards a goal, its not going towards an ending, nada. Its just online matches

I tried playing Fire Emblem and I remember a b8er described everybody that tries that game eventually gets "paralyzed". They're overwhelmed by all of the shit thats in it. The marriages, supports, the BREEDING, etc. Happened to me.

I tried playing DQVIII. This might be another issue entirely, but I grinded the FUCK out of that game. My guys were pretty cool and I had all of the best gear. I got burned out. So my grinding was for nothing. I think I ALSO got "paralyzed" because I put too much pressure on myself when it comes to them learning abilities and weapon specialties.

and Digimon I tried filling out my pokedex and got burned out again

So I think from now on, I'm gonna have to force myself to like...not care? Just play the game. I'm also a person that is obsessive over missable shit. So I know this is gonna be hard, and I also know forcing yourself TOO hard its gonna result in the same thing

but I dunno man. Sometimes I wanna play a game and I ...just stare at them and then I get turned off, but for the most part I think I AM doing this to myself

so anybody else had to change how they approach games too?

I'm weird - I tend to obsess over looking in every book and cranny before moving on and STILL only manage to get like, 50-60% of collectibles and other hidden shit. So maybe I should take the "don't care" approach too? I'd probably finish way more games.

It's the same for me as I get older. That 100% just isn't as enticing anymore. Every once in awhile I'll find a game that I want to dig into everything but it's becoming more and more rare.

Youtube helps with things like that too, I don't feel bad going there to look up a cutscene or something I might have missed.

I also get super turned off if I have to refer to a guide or a walkthrough

then its just either homework or just copying something from a video

Every now and then I DO find a game that I just HAVE to finish completely no matter what. When I got to the end of Shantae: Half Genie Hero, I was at something like 86%, so before going to the final boss I looked up where to find what I missed.

Thankfully I had this realization pretty early on. I think around the time maybe Assassin's Creed Revelations came out I stopped caring about going for 100% or seeing all the things a game has to offer. That Ubi open-world formula really makes you realize how vapid a lot of side content can really be. Pretty much the only games I'll 100% now are survival horror games.

Interesting topic. I've never been a completionist. That might also stem from the fact that I am naturally not a perfectionist in life either.

I've definitely been in a similar boat. It's one thing when you're doing it because you enjoy the game so much and want to experience all the content. It's another thing entirely if you're doing it like a chore.

One thing that's really helped me out with just not caring about missables is to put a higher priority on just seeing the credits. And if I enjoyed the game enough after that, I can always pick it back up and go through again, with a better understanding of everything and be less likely to need a guide or any other sort of help. Beating the game won't prevent you from playing it again!

I might never finish Hollow Knight if I insist on getting 100%. Otherwise I'm "paralysed".
Should I say screw it and get to the ending?

Thankfully, I have never been a completionist, even for my favorite games. I've still never done the Queen of Cards quest in FFVIII or finished the monster arena in FFX!

Overwatch is actual trash and the sooner you stop playing it the happier you'll be.

I feel this for sure. I used to have a pretty big completionist leaning but yeah, I also discovered at a certain point that all it was giving me was burn out. I didn't play as many games as I could, and those I did play I enjoyed less because at a certain point they just started to feel like work - and there's already enough work in my life. Games should be fun!

Granted, I do still go for 100% in games I absolutely fall head over heels in love with, but those are few and far between, and never feel like a pain to play.

As a fellow completionist, I feel you
Personally I aim for the "middle ground" - I will try to 100% the game, but if something is going to be insanely long and not worth it, I am going to suck it up and give up on doing it

Take San Andreas for example. I did everything needed to get a 100% in the stats. But there was also something called "Pilot Ranking" which levels up depending on how much time you fly a plane
Reaching the top rank takes...30 hours..of doing nothing but flying
This is a pure waste of time and I decided not to do it.

This year I also did a Resident Evil series marathon.
In Revelations, I only made it to something like level 25 (out of 50) in Raid Mode, because this is such a grindfest
Revelations 2 is even worse, to actually 100% Raid Mode, you need to get to level 50 with every character (and there are 12 or 15, I think)
Doing more than 100 hours of pure grinding? no, thank you
I do have every achievement in Revelations 2 though

Hollow Knight is another good example of "the point someone should stop bothering"
100% the game? simple enough
100% the first 3 DLCs? fine, Nightmare King Grimm is a pain but...still, possible
100% the last DLC? yeah, no, this is insane now
A boss rush of all the bosses in the game with a non-upgraded Nail, 4 life bars, no charms and one soul bar. And to really really 100% it? beat it without getting hit once

I feel ya. It got to this point that I would have a bunch of games sitting around and I wasn't getting to them, and I would keep dragging my feet with whatever I was playing... and I'd tend to prefer to just login to WoW/Gears/GW2/Overwatch/etc instead. I find that when I hit that point, I just need to grab a guide and zip through the game so I experience some of it instead of experiencing none of it.
