I surprisingly received a Switch for Christmas, so I suppose I should be getting games for it. I originally intended to buy Yoshi's Crafted World or an eShop card and buy several games there, but then I remembered this game getting glowing reviews. I used to like the series when I was a teenager. I had very fond memories of the first GBA game and Path of Radiance.

The last two games that I played were Shadow Dragon and Radiant Dawn. Being underwhelmed by them and hearing that future games went downhill in the tactical RPG front and were more focused on emphasizing arbitrary rapport and breeding or something weird like that made me think that I had simply outgrown the series and moved on.

Having been away for over a decade now and hearing high praise for the latest entry, has the gameplay and mission design continued to stagnate or has it made a comeback in Three Houses?

It definitely has rebounded from Awakening/Fates IMO. OTOH, 3H is unique in that a good chunk of the game (albeit largely skippable if you like) has you in a central hub where you can go around and talk/socialize/fishing minigame/etc. between story missions. And it sounds like you would not be a fan of that.

Breeding is out though.

I think it would probably be worth a shot. Personally, I think it's probably the best game in the series I played (Tellius held that shot previously which given you're up on one and down on the other may not be that helpful!)

I know they said it has non-mission stuff that is reminiscent of Persona, and I actually like the slice-of-life side stuff in the Persona games that I have played more than the main focus. However, in Fire Emblem, I care about the battles first and foremost.

If you like Persona and you like Fire Emblem you should like this game.

If you want the battles to be more challenging, don't go with the Normal difficulty. I'm a rather casual fan of the strategy genre, but I find the battles got too easy after the few first chapters.

The slice-of-life side stuff is much, much shallower, IMHO, in Three Houses than even Persona 3 but, well, it's decent.

Overall, very much recommended.

Start on Hard mode if you care about the battles

It's a good game, and they managed to emphasize the characters beyond their reproductive capabilities. Even on Hard mode, however, there are only a few maps that are at all difficult. This is primarily due to a new game mechanic that allows you to rewind time instead of restarting the full level.

It's an absolute winner, though I will parrot the recommendation of starting on hard. I play basically all games on normal or easy, and I would still say starting on Hard is a necessity.

Would still say go casual for the permadeath since I never understood the love for that mechanic, but that's a personal preference in the end.

If we're talking actual game ass games and ignoring how my top 3 games of the year are likely all VNs, it's almost certainly my #1. This is a game that will make you care about the characters, even if you didn't give a damn about characters in FE games before.

Mission difficulty is not what I had in mind. I am far more interested in:
- Gameplay mechanics/evolution from previous games
- Mission designs and structures (physical layout and depth of objectives)

It has a lot of changes from previous games, don't worry about that. Mechanically, classes are more complicated now. I'd say the maps a little weak, though, it's still mostly 'kill everything' or 'kill the boss.'

Even on hard I think the maps are fairly simple and non-strategic

I liked the game but as a strategy game it's extremely basic

I got a gift card to purchase eShop games, and I am probably getting Crafted World for my birthday, so I went ahead and bought Three House.

My husband is bad at fire emblem. He still thinks Normal is too easy.

I actually had deaths on hard that I needed to rewind.

Mission difficulty is not what I had in mind. I am far more interested in:
- Gameplay mechanics/evolution from previous games
- Mission designs and structures (physical layout and depth of objectives)

+Tons more character customization
-Less depth outside of that (weapon triangle is essentially gone, for example)
-Level design I'd say is a bit weaker, and sometimes you fight on the same maps multiple times (although it isn't as bad as it sounds since starting spots vary)

Weapon triangle may be gone, but the addition of combat arts and gambits throws more depth back into it IMO.

I've never played a Fire Emblem game before Three Houses and I thought it was really easy.
