You got that backwards. Vice is the British spelling for vise.

Meh, it's another British English vs American English "correction" again. Though why that word was ever altered to begin with I do not know; it seems fairly ridiculous, all things considered.

But then... well. I needn't say more.

If it's supposed to be a reference to the tool, the proper spelling is "Vise-Grip"

"Vice" is the commonwealth spelling

So this makes it kind of ironic, Unova (NYC) had the spelling of the British, while Galar (UK) has has the USA spelling

In the US, "vice" with a "c" generally means something immoral. The vice squad is a police division that enforces laws against prostitution, drugs, or gambling. It can also refer to bad habits such as smoking or drinking.

I don't know man. In wrestling they have wrestling moves that sue the spelling "vice". Anaconda Vice andThe Khali Vice Grip come to mind.

Words can have more then one meaning, they can also have their roots visible in them. Two things American English seems to not grasp at times.

American English also has homonyms and words where the etymology is apparent, dude.

Or did you mean to say 'Americans' instead of 'American English'?

Apparently, 'defence' comes from the Old French word 'defens', which in turns comes from the Late Latin 'defensum', so I'd say the British spelling is more inconsistent here.

Its unfortunate that American English has such a huge impact on pretty much everything even though its mostly wrong.

Vise is American while vice is British. Vise to me would be pronounced with a Z (zed) sound.

Scroll down a bit.

vice
often US vise
/ (vas) /
noun
an appliance for holding an object while work is done upon it, usually having a pair of jaws
verb
(tr) to grip (something) with or as if with a vice

To be honest, as a Brit, I hadn't even heard of "vise". I can't say I care much about this change either way. I'd prefer the British spelling since I'm more used to it, but it's such a minor thing.
