Reinventing the wheel at the beginning of every game. And that he game is unfair and luck based commonly, and being unlikely to beat the game because you have low stats and need to grind some stats to improve is silly.

like I Ill replay Super Mario World or Mega Man X or death smiles many times and it doesnt feel repetitive, but most roguelikes feel kinda grindy and luck based (partially, I know theres skill too but FTL did feel like it had a lot of luck in events, though not if you won or lost overall).

Anyways, what are your favorite roguelikes you recommend?

i do sorta like dead cells and FTL. Not a fan of shovel knight or rogue legacy. I do have a affinity for more popular titles with a bigger fanbase or current community even if game is single player. Kinda excited for slay the spire to release on iOS but theres a big heaping pile of junk roguelike card games Ive played recently so am worried it wont live to the hype.

These of some of my favorites.

Rogue Legacy
Crypt of the NecroDancer
Cadence of Hyrule
Binding of Isaac
Invisible, Inc.

Ive also heard Splunuky is good.
And ToeJam and Earl, though old and may not have ages well. Haha.

And while I like Rad, its probably only ok for some...

Binding Of Issac is the only one you need.

Sure, Enter The Gungeon, Rogue Legacy, and Dead Cells are great games. But Binding Of Issac is the one, baby. My 2 year old actually forced me to play it when I downloaded free on PSN. Id play, hed watch, and I didnt enjoy it... at first.

Then I went on to unlock every ending, every character, everything!

BoI never really hooked me. Dunno why. Risk of Rain, Rogue Legacy, and Dead Cells are the main ones that I've really found myself liking.

I enjoy playing path of exile on hardcore for a similar experience. Still perma death, but because the game isn't designed entirely around multiple runs success or failure feels more dependent on skill and decision making than randomness.

Except for the bosses (which is odd), the game is excellent. The art goes far beyond its spritework, all the animations are very heavy and meaty and satisfying

And there are hundreds of context sensitive animations, too. For example, when you have a high kill chain and the right charm you'll do a high speed run. If you have certain items this becomes a Hayabusa run, or a Naruto run - and both also have additional animations for when under certain debuffs, which was really unnecessary but is hella cool. (and the wounded naruto run is patheticly funny looking)

It's a very good game. Lots of challenge to be had, but also a very good pace of meta-progression. I find that's what I really like to see in rogueli(k/t)es, since it gives a more concrete sense of progress than just my personal improvement (which is often harder to discern due to random elements making the difficulty inconsistent).

I like roguelikes but they do struggle with making things feel really rewarding. I think that Dead Cells and Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon are examples of roguelikes that pace out unlocks and progression very well, with Dead Cells probably being my favorite.

If you are interested in D&D/classic style adventure games, I have always found Caves of Qud very intriguing.
Graphics resemble old 70s or 80s computer games.
It is still in development but for what it is right now I can see it being something big in the future.

Binding of Issac's gameplay loop is the perfect mix of progression and learning.

Every run you do will always guarantee a new item to unlock. Runs are perfectly sized at first and then branch out very large.

I haven't played it in a while, but if the Switch version goes on sale, I'm going to pick it up and start from scratch again.

Most people hate it but I absolutely love Caves of Qud. I'll get lost in that game for days.

Also a big fan of survival roguelikes/lites such as The Long Dark and The Flame in the Flood.

blu, you might try looking up a youtuber called Northernlion and checking his "Northernlion tries" series. I keep his videos on as background noise to help me sleep but he sometimes plays various roguelikes, you might find something you like there.

Lots of good mentions, and one of my fave newer genres. I've beaten Issac, Gungeon, Moonlighter, Dead Cells, Rogue Legacy. The idea isn't to complete it in one go. Like most games you need to unlock things first. Usually there are permanent gains along with the randomized stuff like weapons which gives you good and bad runs. So yeah there's a bit of grinding and some luck involved.
