blogfaqs - spoilers probably

I'm an hour and a half into the game. Its absolutely beautiful, but the controls are a letdown. I have to preface by saying within the last few months I discovered and sunk well over 100 hours into Celeste & Hollow Knight. Both of those games the controls and jumping felt tight and precise. In Ori it feels floaty as fuck and its causing me to take damage or have to replay a section because I missed on damn floating platform and have to wait 20 seconds for it to slowly wander back down.

Even after getting wall climb and dash its lacking. I'm also miffed I apparently cant change the button layout. Playing on Switch.

The story while short and sweet is fine but the enemies like wtf are these purple things, and the combat is (so far) literally spam the homing projectile button while standing there and letting orbs just come to you.

I'm sorry if people love the game but so far it's a let down.

I'm hoping now that this damn tree thing told me I have to get 3 light things from 3 places that these 3 places have some resemblance of a boss fight or at least more creative platforming sections.

The end of each dungeon is pretty cool, yeah. Died quite a few times in the first and third one.

It's a pretty game. Maybe not the best gameplay, but very pretty.

If you're dying a lot you're probably just bad.

I've died maybe a dozen times but 90% of that was being in the dark area and falling to my death. I read somewhere that area was added as part of the definitive edition?

I'm hoping those 3 dungeons are a bit more rewarding.

Side question - is there a particular branch of the skill tree i should focus on? I have just been alternating

That's up to you.

I went straight to triple jump then revealing collectibles on the map. Combat is too easy to need to focus that tree.

oh if you want creative platforming that first one is gonna make you want to pull your hair out.

i'm currently in the middle of playing it myself. the movement isn't ever fully precise but you're given a TON of leeway. that dark dungeon is totally doable where you are and does give you another movement technique if you get through the first section. in terms of what branches to do the blue and purple ones are the most important ones. chasing triple jump makes perfect sense, as does chasing map stuff/double bonus effects (i went for double EXP or whatever first). combat is simple enough i still haven't gotten through the one for fighting.

I basically agree with all those complaints, but one thing I realized about halfway in is that the controls work a lot better if you stop trying to be precise and just try to blitz through each platforming section instead. This isn't an excuse since, as you said, something like Hollow Knight just plain controls better, but it does make the game more enjoyable.

oh hey I am also playing Ori on Switch and I have died many times because the controls were not as smooth and precise as I would have expected during platforming

Never found Ori controls to be anything but smooth. Is this a Switch thing?

Yeah, I am wondering that as well because it is sublime on XB1.

Thanks for the comments everyone, it's nice to see a few others feel the same way at least about the controls. I dont want to paint the picture that it controls poorly it just feels so floaty and sluggish? They feel smooth and responsive enough. Never tried the xbox or PC version.

I'm going to try and power through the 3 dungeons/areas tomorrow night so it seems that's the best part so I'm optimistic!

I'll try the suggestion about blitzing through areas instead of slower placed platforming.

The darker area threw me off and for a minute I was wondering if I wasnt supposed to quite be there yet seeing as you never really get and true lamp or torch or anything just that small glowing orb halfway through

Love this game so much more than HK and Celeste. The way Ori moves and feels is fantastic to me. Can't wait for Ori 2 in a few months :)

I've never had any issues with Ori and I've played it twice on PC with an Xbox One controller.

I think it might just be a Switch thing.

What Ermine said.

As for combat, the thing that makes combat in Ori great is that you basically focus entirely on movement. You don't have to worry about intense combat because all your attacks are homing. I love the floatiness too. It always feels quite precise to me.

Yeah I never had any issues with the platforming in Ori but it's certainly not on the same level as something like Celeste. Hollow Knight is a better game overall than Ori but I don't think platforming is necessarily a strong point of HK
