Unless it was retconned... the Stand is just the "for our benefit" visual effect provided for the exercise of your own psychic powers.

So where in Akira you'd have Tetsuo doing a mind-stare to reflect a bullet, in JoJo it'd be a dude slapping that bullet out of the air.

You are likely correct, I don't know Jojo that well... I can't recall a time when a character responds to someone else's stand in the original Stardust Crusaders anime.

There could be one, just saying I can't recall.
