Yeah, the only annoying part is leveling Pokmon you don't want to level.

Like Magikarp, when I was trying to farm Ditto. Damn, Magikarp just kept gaining defense and non-splash moves.

Yes.
It doesn't affect gameplay. Eventually you get so many Exp Candies that you can basically level all of your Pokemon to 100.

In the original games there was a negative too leveling quickly and levelling too 100 early, not the case since gen IV or so.

I don't recall that at all.

A high leveled Pokmon that had a different Trainer ID from your own wouldn't listen to you, most of the time. But your own Pokmon could be as high as you want. You can trade your Pokmon to another game, have it grind to 100, trade it back, and it would do everything you said.

you could absolutely level your pokemon too high in gen one and then they would disobey. that was part of what the gym badges did

No, that was only on Pokmon that didn't belong to you.

I'm a bit rusty on early gen mechanics, but I think that was when stats only adjusted on level up (due to EVs)? The player doesn't really get punished for leveling too quickly though, unless they only used rare candies all the way to 100.

Only that a level 100 Pokmon's stats are no longer recalculated.I think Gen 3 changed it to boxing as well and Gen IV or later turned it to after every gain of EV'.

Yeah, that was my implication about level 100.

Gen 4 still did that I think. I recall hacking in a level 99 Pokmon with zero EVs and then rehacking it and giving it full EVs, just to see it gain all its stats in one level up. It was kinda cool.

But I could be wrong, since the Pokemon was hacked.

The Y-Comm? I hate it too. You use it to trade or battle with other people. You can do it locally or via Internet if you have a Switch online subscription.

AFAIK, you can't. There are a few places where you enter and it won't appear, but not many. It's dumb since that's the only UI on the screen (and it doesn't really DO anything). It's a total waste of space. It could have easily been put into the normal menu.

In other RPGs people in the other party get xp share. To be honest I prefer the share on, otherwise I end up with one uber Pokemon and everyone else is just filler.

Because I have a level 30 starter and four level 25-27 Pokemon and havent even got to the first gym yet

in a normal Pokemon game Id barely be up to lvl 16 with my starter. Just seems really dumbed down and designed to help you breeze through the story mode

i haven't played swsh, but i gave up on ultra moon because my team comp wasn't working and i would have had to grind a ton to get it optimal

grinding isn't fun

Some people like to EV train their pokemon and having XP share on always prevents you from getting stronger pokemon.

If you have a pokemon that rarely battles and gets leveled mostly by XP share, it will be weaker than a pokemon who has killed say... a whole bunch of pokemon that yield Speed EVs. It will be much faster than the same pokemon who just sat on the bench.

You can still do this but you have to bank all your other pokemon. Or painstakingly farm feathers/vitamins.

It's not like it would be hard to have an option to turn off the XP share for competitive players.

What are you talking about? If it gains exp, it gets EVs. Exp Share has always been used for EV training.

usum was definitely an exception, i had to put a lot of thought into my team composition just to pass the main story. i'm not like a pokemon expert or anything though

Thats even worse then. Cause if youre aiming to EV train a specific stat, you dont want Pokemon on your bench just gaining random EVs based on what your lead Pokemon is fighting. The fact that they gain EVs by Exp sharing is still not ideal cause you have no choice in what EVs theyre gaining unless you bank them and prevent them from gaining Exp/EV

No, it is not worse. I don't know your experience with EV training, but your lead Pokemon is never the one that wants EVs. It's just a higher level to train the rest. If you're EV training, you load the intended Pokemon to be trained with vitamins, attach exp share, use vs. seeker/sweet scent/whatever the game specific method is, then use a higher level lead Pokemon to wipe the enemy and repeat.

You don't carry around a newborn Pokemon you'd been breeding into random battles. If you're going to EV train, you EV train. The moment after you get the nature, ability, and IVs you want, you load him up on vitamins and go straight to training. Depending on the game, an hour at most to finish (ridiculously faster if you have power items or Pokerus).

And regardless of all that, EV training is much easier in SwoSh. You don't have to train it traditionally; you can just feed it all the vitamins you want to cap out stats (granted it costs a half million per Pokemon and can be hard to start up).

Yes, being unable to turn off Exp Share is annoying, but it is not detrimental to EV training at all.

Ah I see. Tbh havent EV trained since HGSS so things might be slightly different now. But I still dont like the idea of being this overlevelled at this stage of the game, and I dont wanna have to over nerf myself by not training as normal just to compensate for a broken system that makes me OP for no reason. Should at least have the option to turn it off

I I played through all of XY and ORAS without Exp. Share and it made the main story quite fun. If you let certain opponents live long enough, they'll actually use setups and buffs/debuffs and clever strategies to try to take you down. Some random late game trainer in XY nearly fully wiped me with Attract, Paralysis, and flinching moves.

I think the one thing I want the most is faster animations. I like seeing them initially, but play with them off because it takes so long. It's like the one thing GF never improves.
