It has been my favorite console this generation. Does multimedia a lot better than the PS4 and Ive found game pass to be better than PlayStation Now. A lot of the hate for the X1 is fairly unwarranted. The whole always online thing that they wanted to do in the beginning is exactly like how Steam is, so I dont really understand why so many people lost their shit over it. Enjoy your new console!

I love the game pass, you should check out Gears of War and the Arkham games if you havent played them yet

Ehh, I bought my 360 in 2012 (when it was already 6 years old, and about a year and a half before it technically became "obsolete"), and I got tons of enjoyment out of it. Especially since I didn't buy a PS4 until 2015 (and never bought an Xbox One at all). And because I don't even remotely give a single shit about online multiplayer or playing the "popular" game of the moment.

If anything, waiting that long before buying it worked out way better, because most of the games worth playing were already out and had most of their bugs fully patched, and XBox Live Gold was giving me a bunch of worthwhile games for free. It also meant I was getting the most stable version of the console, and not the ones that would red ring 50% of the time or catch on fire because of design flaws (which is why I still have/play my 360 today).

As is, I probably won't be buying a PS5 or Xbox whatever next gen until like at least 2023, assuming I'm not dead by then.

A really underrated Xbox feature is streaming your Xbox to PC (and soon mobile). This let's me play my xbox all over the house through my laptop, use a PC headset for game audio (and easy access to chat apps), and do game sharing/local coop over the internet with screen share programs like Parsec. It's really spiffy, the only shortcoming is that the window must be active for controller input.

IIRC, the bigger issue early on was the whole "used games" and "forced Kinect" stuff

Not if you just keep the controller connected to the Xbox, instead of the computer. When it tells you there's no controller connected, just click continue.
