Pretty simple, really.
I just installed a 2.5" HDD in a laptop, but realized after the fact that it's a bit "loose" and that's due to being 7 mm thick while as this laptop was built for a 9.5 mm thick drive. Apparently these newer models often come with spacers to help with this issue, but I lucked out and bought from a company that doesn't do this. :(

So...i found a spacer on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Edge-7mm-9-5mm-Spacer-Adapter/dp/B014LQM6I2

I just want to make absolutely sure... I already formatted and partitioned this drive, but it is not the C drive (ie, doesn't have the operating system). I should be totally fine turning off the laptop's power, removing the drive, applying this spacer, re-inserting it, and powering the computer back on....right?

You should. As long as the computer isn't actually on (and hasn't been for a minute or so), there won't be any power running to the drive or data being read, so unplugging/plugging in the drive won't hurt anything.

it's not ram, so yes, you'll be fine as long as it's off.

They make spacers? Could have used that last year when I replaced a drive in my lappy.

Yeah, like the one I linked.

Some drives from more considerate manufacturers apparently come with plastic ones you can stick on.

When I first googled it, I saw a promising solution utilizing foam tape to create the necessary cushioning. But the cost of a roll of the foam tape is actually more expensive than just buying the spacer that's designed specifically for this that I linked.

I am unsure, though...seemed like the empty space was more on the "underside" of the drive than the label side. Hopefully the spacer doesn't force the connectors in slightly crooked...

i mean, if you're worried about the thing wiggling up and down, just fold up some paper, or paper towels, or toilet paper, and snug that shit up

Make sure you power the laptop off, disconnect the power cord, and if possible, remove the battery (may not be possible in some newer models).

Ok, new question...

What if, now that it's been formatted and assigned a drive letter in disc management.... I remove said drive (power off, of course), and then use the laptop for a while before eventually reinstalling it?

Long story short.... won't be getting the spacer before a trip, and want to remove the drive to take it on said trip w/o fear of the loose drive jostling around, and get to dealing w/ this issue after the trip....

This is literally all you have to do.

However, you would be fine if you removed the drive for a while, Windows isn't going to care, and when it's back in, it'll work like it is now.

Alright, thanks.

I figured, but it's nice to be sure....
