This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if there is a compelling reason for both characters to be linked (either co-starring in a game ala Banjo & Kazooie, or always appearing together like Callie & Marie from Splatoon).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

Dick Tracy - LAW fodder

he was already a half-forgotten has-been in 1990 when the live-action film and games came out and if anything the tepid response to those just nailed his coffin shut.

Claus - LAW fodder

i was actually thinking his game was too strong for presumably important characters (never played mother 3 myself) from it to be this bad but lookin at play rate polls suggests a lot of people voting it in 2015 probably never actually played it.

red mage - high fodder

close to mid probably but getting doubled by lugia was really bad. Not confident he beats the better grand theft auto mains.

Agree with High Fodder for Red Mage, albeit barely. One of the first jobs available in the series, and has recurred in a multitude of games, but I am not sure how popular of a pick Red Mage is for a party member.

For Claus and Dick Tracy, I think both are Low Fodder, not LAW.

Regarding Claus, I think he resembles Lucas enough to have some semblance of strength similar to him.

Dick Tracy is someone most of the older-trending site will know, and has a film noir look that I think will appeal to voters. And I'm sure some people have seen the 1990 movie due to its stylistic similarity to 1989's Batman - and it has freaking Al Pacino and Madonna in it. Also the Great Piggy Bank Robbery episode of Looney Tunes, which parodies Dick Tracy, is pretty well-known.

Red Mage: High Fodder

Claus: Low Fodder - Mother 3 is very well-regarded, despite its low playrate, and the Lucas resemblance could provide a slight boost. Most importantly, it doesn't take much to escape LAW Fodder; we've agreed that a fourth-rate Kingdom Hearts character can do it, among others. As such, I think it's an easy bar for a well-liked character from a highly respected, decently strong game.

Dick Tracy: LAW Fodder - Literally the only reason I nominated him. Who exactly is going to be voting for Dick Tracy on GameFAQs, again? No, half_silver's comments don't answer that question for me.

Sly Cooper: Mid Fodder - I think Axem's renomination overstated the case a bit - most notably, why would Lugia have stayed even from 2013 to now while most other Pokmon have noticeably declined? However, I do think High Fodder was a bit of an overestimation in retrospect.

forgot about the re-ranking. Mid Fodder for Sly Cooper. I don't think getting doubled by Lugia in 2013 was completely terrible, considering how strong Pokemon were that contest.

To be fair Lugia got owned the following round by Cloud and Frog, in a contest that otherwise was not great for FFVII or CT.

If Robocop, Mad Max, and Rocky are low fodder, I have a hard time seeing Dick Tracy on par with them.

2013 was about as "not great" for CT as 2018 was. To put it another way, calling 2013 a bad contest for the CT crew smacks of looking at their results exclusively, without considering other factors such as percentages.

Magus notched a decent 59% on Otacon in round 1, despite potentially being held back by overlap with Jade Curtiss, in a year where all the MGS characters were at their peak. Then, round 2 was the infamous situation where Crono lost to Pikachu with Magus as the third wheel, but in truth, their match likely would have been a 50-50 if you remove Magus, just like it would be today.

As for the subject at hand, Frog scored 36% on Cloud in his 2013 loss, compared to 38% on Luigi last year - and while we know 2013 was an off contest for Cloud, was he really no stronger than Luigi is today? Lugia lost in that same match with 31.5% directly on Cloud, so if 2013 Cloud was ahead of Luigi today, it follows that 2013 Lugia was ahead of Lugia today, and by proxy, above the Fodder Line.

That is admittedly a good point. Pikachu turned out to be on par with Mega Man, who is on par with Crono. Obviously I am remembering Ulti's analyses a bit too much.

As far as Dick Tracy, I guess he has a more distinctive design than Mad Max or Rocky, but not having any recent relevance compared to those two having at least a tiny sliver of it and said design not really being THAT distinctive when all is said and done cancel it out.
