My wife and I are on a vacation to take in some vegas shows/sights/sounds.

Currently we have tickets to see a magician tomorrow (unfortunately Penn and Teller are out of town this weekend so we went with Shin Lim) and tickets to see a Harry Potter parody/comedy show on Saturday.

Both shows are in the evening so Friday and Sunday morning + afternoon are currently free and we have nothing planned for Sunday yet.

We're pretty much just going to be winging it with our spare time so I'm open to suggestions. We probably won't be gambling because we like having money and my wife is particularly sensitive to cigarette smoke. We'll pay to see another show if there is something that is absolutely a must-see while we're here, but we'd like to maximize value with our free time.

Where ya staying?

If you want an awesome lunch view, go to Spago in the Bellagio and try and get a seat on the balcony. It used to be a little place called Olives, but its now a Wolfgang Puck place. If you don't want to get lunch there, wait until dinner and eat at Yellowtail. Again try and get on the balcony, you have an awesome view of the fountains and the food at Yellowtail is legit.

The shops in between the Aria and NYNY are also kind of fun. M&M shop, Coke shop, Hard Rock, things like that. Forum shops inside Ceaser's as well are cool.

If you are a nerd like me going to the dinner theater Tournament of Kings is fun. Its inside the Excalibur.

Top Golf is fun, kinda expensive but I had a good time.

Decent Mall just past Treasure Island as well. Lots of good shops and things in there.

The aquarium is all the way down the strip inside the Mandalay Bay. Again kind of expensive, but you can usually get a good deal if you look around.

I don't recommend going to Gold and Silver Pawn Shop (the pawn stars show) but I do suggest going to Count's Kustoms if you are into cars and bikes. They let you tour the shop, and there are some sick cars in there.

Those are some fun things, it all depends where you are staying. If you are seeing Shin Lim I'm assuming you are somewhat near the Mirage.

Anyway, have fun Vegas is great.

Great suggestions so far.

And we're staying in Circus Circus. It's not the most lavish hotel on the strip, but it was significantly better priced than the nearby alternatives.

I recommend the following food places that I always go to when i visit:

  • Secret Pizza in the Cosmopolitan (best pizza I ever had the first time I went there but it was this deep-dish style, the last time I went it was non-deep-dish... so that regular pizza was good but not the greatest. But still pretty good!)
  • In 'N Out burger in the Linq promenade (though if you live on the west coast you're probably used to it already but for me, the best burger out of many burgers I've eaten...)
  • Lunch in the Stratosphere revolving restaurant, cheaper than dinner and I've done both, and prefer the clear daytime views to the lighted-up strip at night. I'm a "sights" kind of guy and 107 floors up, probably enjoy the clear sightlines all the way out to the mountains as much if not more than the strip.

I'm not a "show" guy, the only ones I've ever seen were Penn & Teller and the Michael Jackson cirque show which was pretty impressive, but that was 6 years ago. Think that was in the MGM. Also heard good things about Beatles Love (Mirage) and O (Bellagio, I think?).

The hop-on/hop-off bus tour, again I only did it once 6 years ago, but I like those kinds of things... takes you all around town and learn all kinds of neat facts. It also makes stops at a bunch of diff places where, well, you can hop off and hop on the next one, like the Vegas sign at the south or the discount outlet for shopping up north (at least the one I took did). Might not be worth the price point though if you could use it to get around town, would save you having to get the SDX pass (which I believe is $8/day or $20/3 days)

Other than that I gamble so I don't really have much else... hope you guys have fun!

The Beatles Cirque show is pretty good. If you wanna hang with the local crowd go to Gold Spike in old Vegas.

This sounds awesome!
We might do that today actually.

Still don't know what we'll do in terms of dining options. The top of the world restaurant seems promising.

1000 on black. Double up then slide it on down to third 12.

For real though I like sportsbetting because ive built some ok data models in the past mostly.

Cosmos and caesars buffetts are probably my favorite strip buffett, but there are way more cost effective buffetts off strip. Didnt really think secret pizza was particularly amazing but its not bad.

Favorite sportsbook is the westgate, but its far. Planet hollywoods is underrated imo with lots of tvs.

Not much of a clubber because i broke my knees years ago and like to sit down a bit more than most, but most like XS

Red rock is pretty senic and even my bad knees could handle it perfectly fine

We had a buffet topic a bit ago and I'll throw this in again, in my opinion the best price to deliciousness ratio is a bit of a drive south of the strip at the M.

Also unsure if changed recently but for the cheap also one of the remaining places that doesn't close between meal periods so you can say pay for lunch at the very end and get dinner(which is only ever slightly different) for lunch prices.

@red13n their website indicates they transition from lunch to dinner at 2:30. What time would you recommend getting there? I don't know how strict they will be for the lunch pricing.

depends on the line, I did this by chance(Not trying we just wanted to eat around 2) getting there at 2 but it can vary depending on how crowded the area and what is going on that week. Getting there by 1:50 and then finding a place to hang if the line isn't long is probably best if the goal is save money.

Good call @LOLIAmAnAlt !

Now we're heading to the buffet at the M where we'll try and snipe the dinner food at lunch prices

So apparently on Saturday they only do the Seafood Buffet which costs significantly more than even the Dinner price. Instead of doing that we ended up going to the buffet at The Palms which was quite good, but still a bit pricy.

I won't need food for like 24 hours though so there's that. Now we're killing some time until our harry potter parody show starts at Ballys at 8.

ugh looks like thats Friday to Sunday now and regular buffet Monday-Thursday.

Mediocre seafood buffet upcharges have become a thing everywhere and it is rare that they are ever worth the cost.

We are California natives so we are familiar with the greatness of In N Out.

...but with that said we will likely eat there for one of our cheap meals before we go.

We saw Potted Potter tonight, which was the Harry Potter parody performance and it was absolutely hilarious. I think it would have been funny even if we weren't incredibly familiar with the source material, but being knowledgeable definitely enhanced it.

Still no firm plans for tomorrow though.

An NFL Sunday at a Sportsbook is a good atmosphere. Place a couple bets, watch people cheer or boo when a backdoor cover occurs or the Over hits.

walk up to the counter and give them the number of the event. If you want to bet the over/under, say the number and than over/under.

All the sportsbooks have large sheets on the wall (and a digital board) saying the event numbers and the current lines. Its pretty easy to place a bet.

if you want to go out of the city and not be a tourist then go off the beaten path and head to valley of fire or zion and hike.

Or at least go to red rock canyon or mt. charleston which are literally right outside vegas

if you want good food then venture off the strip a bit.

tacos Tijuana is a good place if you want an authentic mexican place. so fucking good.

The neon sign graveyard just off the strip is pretty neat- believe its beyond Fremont. It's a collection of a bunch of the really old neon signs from super early vegas just kind of piled up in this big lot.
