So instead of showing code, it now just shows the result? That's not the worst change ever, although strike-through looks very weird in this preview...

oh they finally actually added a white box where the text goes instead of it being the same color as the fucking background

the one thing i don't like about it is that you can't just manually format the text.

if you want to <b>bold</b> a word, you have to stop typing, go click the button, type what you want, go click the button again, start typing only to realize you're still typing in bold or whatever because you didn't put a space after the word you wanted formatted, so now you have to erase what you just typed that's erroneously bold, make sure there's a space after the word you did want bold, then go back and click the fucking button

it's annoying.

They usually do whenever they make a change. Because they don't actually give a shit whether or not you want it or like it or would prefer to continue using the old way, because that would require them to do actual work.

It's not hard to set things up to allow for multiple input methods (even Reddit still has their new editor and older version), but that requires slightly more coding and understanding of how code actually works.

It's fucking up a few things (par for the course whenever GameFAQs introduces something new - they add one new thing and then break three old ones).

As you can actually see in your post, it seems to force double line spacing after quotes. Using the new editor it seems you're stuck with either no space or double space with no way in-between. Which is pretty much the default when you use the old method.

It also forces quotes into the new method even if you're using the old method for display, which actually makes the editor the opposite of WYSISWG, because what you're seeing while typing isn't what you're getting when you post.

Double spacing is gross. Id take no spacing before double space. But I like single space.

They also changed it so that if youre quoting multiple quotes, it only quotes the most recent person. For the old way, that is. I dont know about the new way...

It looks like shit, so no.

Though the other problem there might be that what looks good one way doesn't look good another way. So it may depend on if you're still using the quote box or have shifted to inline quoting. No space and double-space look like shit with quote boxes. And since those are the thing I use, it's also the only thing I care about.

(I also don't know if the new editor has the same problem the old editor had with line breaks, which is that it's too stupid or too overprotective to accept multiple breaks in a row, so you're forced to resort to code-based fuckery to trick the editor into doing what you want. I constantly have to add unwanted code to most of my posts to force it to look the way I want it to. But if that's still a problem, it would actually be worse in the new editor, because you'd lack the tools to fix anything.)

Though even beyond that, the site has a nasty habit of inserting random line breaks into things after the fact that make things look even worse regardless of what you've typed. But that's not a new thing (it's been that way for a while now), and mostly only becomes an issue when you're quoting other people.

You could do that in the old editor as well, though. Just highlight something and hit Ctrl B/I/S/etc. It auto-inserts the brackets for you.

But honestly, after nearly 25 years of coding and typing chat/message board text in code, I can actually type open/closed brackets and formatting faster than I can stop, highlight, and hit formatting buttons (or even just click buttons in an editor that works like Word). So personally I'll always prefer being able to code text rather than being forced into an awkward UI (though I do understand why some people might prefer it, and don't mind it being provided as an option as long as the old option isn't completely done away with in the process).

Honestly, that's always been my biggest problem with GameFAQs updates. When they provide new features as something you can opt into/out of but with the established system still there, it's fine. I really only loathe their changes when they introduce unnecessary bullshit and then force you to use it whether you want to or not.

They've actually been pretty good about making most of the recent changes optional, though. They just need to learn to communicate changes better, and make it more obvious how to switch back away from the default option and I might almost be positive about some of it.

Its probably because they removed quoting within quotes or whatever they did. So, it makes a space for the quote, but leaves it empty. So, if somebody quotes another person without saying anything, and you try to quote them, it will tell you that theres nothing in the message to quote...

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/6-gamefaqs-announcements

on every post about a change going live, there's always a line about how you can go back to the old style, if it's being kept, and where to find the option (always advanced settings, btw.).

if they did any other way of telling people how things were being changed, such as a notification on the header, or the old style of being told you have a moderation with it appearing above the board name, then everyone would complain, like they already do about anything.

no, the reason imgur stopped working was due to imgur.

they don't like people hotlinking how gamefaqs did, which is why the new hotlinking has shitty headers. that, and combined with imgtc, there wasn't a reason to bring imgur back.

it was actually imgtc going away that prompted them to re-add imgur hotlinking, and then it ultimately ended up with gamefaqs just having its own hosting.

I don't really feel like that's enough communication, because it's actually hard for more casual users to find the Announcements board if they don't already know where it is, or aren't checking it on a regular basis (and when they tend to post there after making changes, with no real advanced warning). And just saying you can change it back in your settings isn't necessarily helpful for everyone, when a more detailed explanation how can make things way easier (and which isn't even that difficult for them, because it's what people on the boards all wind up posting to other people anyway, which means it's just a case of Allen being a lazy fuck).

More open communication and clearer explanations would probably cut back on a lot of the negativity every time they make a change. Especially when every time it winds up resulting in like two dozen topics talking about how ugly everything looks or how terrible it is and complaining that they don't know how to turn it off.

By that logic, they should never do anything, ever, because no matter what they do people will always complain, and it isn't worth doing something if people are going to complain.

The thing is, if they're so bound and determined to try and give "the kids" what they want in a desperate attempt to draw new users to the site (which isn't really working), at the very least they should do as much as possible to try and minimize the degree of negative backlash, rather than just shrugging and assuming we'll sort it out ourselves. When they do the bare minimum, they kind of only have themselves to blame when it creates a culture of people hating every new change and constantly shit-talking how inept people running the site are.

who is to say that's why they're doing these changes?

to me, they're just updating the site to not be stuck in the 90's like it was up until about 4 years ago.

these are all quality of life changes, and they're all objectively good changes. you're just unhappy because they're don't function how you want.

there's nothing actually bad about the new chat system. it works how it should. and it allows for native image embedding, regardless of your feelings on image embedding, this is actually a really great thing that people have been asking for, for decades.

but, to you, it's garbage because it...linebreaks after a quote? does a few other minor things? that's nothing.

ParanoidObsessive posted...

it's fine. it's not bad, at the very least. there's no reason for them to push a notification to everyone going "hey look at this stuff that 99% of users here don't really care about!".

the information is there if you want to see it, otherwise it can be ignored. or do you want them to be like reddit, with obnoxious popups all the time? you want them to post it on the home page that...no one goes to?
