Saw it for $30 on Black Friday and was strongly tempted to pick it up, but wound up buying a lot of other stuff during Black Friday so... maybe skipping it for now is for the best, especially since I won't start most games.

It's fun, but nowhere near as good as suggested. It feels like people overpraised it mostly in reaction to the death of that sort of game with BioWare being completely ruined by EA and Bethesda repeatedly shitting their pants in public. I feel like Greedfall got overpraised for the same reason.

Something to remember, though, is that the Outer Worlds is more of a mid-tier Kickstarted game that kind of grew beyond that to be seen more like a AAA title, but there's still a lot of the lower budget and mid-tier design philosophy in it.

My personal problem with the Outer Worlds is game-breaking bugs that make companion quests uncompleteable (which, from my perspective, means the game as a whole is uncompleteable and little more than a fancy drink coaster). But even before that became an issue, a lot of narrative felt rushed and somewhat lazy, and a lot of the branching narrative choices/quest design feel somewhat lame because they're less giving you choices and more just asking "Do you want to do this quest or not?" People just playing for completion likely won't notice as much, but people inclined towards RP are going to notice a LOT of annoying little things that might piss them off.

It's still better than a lot of games, but it's not as good as it could or should be, and it's definitely not as good as people made it sound when it came out.

if there is an outer worlds 2, the expectations that it'll be more than what was presented should be justified, since now they have Microsoft money. most of the hype surrounding the game had to do with everyone going "it's just a new fallout!!!" when it really wasn't. it was just a normal fps crpg

however, they were/are hiring for a new unnamed rpg, so it remains to be seen what's going to happen with this acquisition

I'm enjoying my time with Outer Worlds but I just ran into a bug which causes a companion quest to fail the instant I accept it. That has killed a lot of my motivation. Half tempted to put it down until they fix it but who knows how long that'll take.

Yesssssssss.

To quote myself:

My personal problem with the Outer Worlds is game-breaking bugs that make companion quests uncompleteable (which, from my perspective, means the game as a whole is uncompleteable and little more than a fancy drink coaster).

That's the bug I got. The second Felix offers his quest and I accept, it autofails. Which is a hefty dose of bullshit.

Supposedly it can happen with Ellie as well (and Parvati's can fail because the game gets confused and thinks she's dead when she isn't). But I stopped playing the moment Felix fucked me over, so I'm never going to see if anyone else bugs out for me.

They're supposedly aware of this, and were looking into it to patch, but at least one patch has come out since then that did nothing to fix it. So either they're still working on it, or they've already given up on it and it'll never be fixed.

It annoys me mostly because the only reason I bought Outer Worlds as early as I did was because everyone was saying how it was amazingly free of major bugs. And then I wind up tripping over one that I consider more major than any other possible bug short of making the game as a whole unbeatable (and since I refuse to ever play the game again until this is fixed, it basically IS that bad for me, because it DOES render the game unbeatable).

Yeah I ran into that exact same issue with Felix's quest just this week. Luckily both Parvati's and Ellie's quests have been fine for me.

They didn't. The patch that went through didn't fix existing issues, and multiple people have reported the same problem since then.

I actually have a save file parked right before I talk to him to trigger his quest. It still autofails every single time, no matter where or how I talk to him. So, definitely not fixed.

Apparently, the patch supposedly reset "dead" companions to read as "alive" for quests, but that only really fixes the problem for Parvati (and at least a few people have said it didn't even fix that). Felix and Ellie don't fail because they're dead, but because of some other conflict in how they read flags.

oh

then you probably killed someone that was important to their quest.

this isn't like Bethesda and their making quest characters invincible, everyone is able to die in outer worlds

Destiny posted...

No, other people who've had the problem have specifically investigated that and dismissed it as the cause, because they didn't kill any quest-important NPCs (in some cases, they didn't even go to any of the places where those NPCs are supposed to be found, so literally could not have killed them).

In fact, some people have mentioned that, in spite of the quest autofailing, it still causes those NPCs to spawn where they need to be, and you can find them and talk to them, but their dialogue doesn't trigger the quest flags because the quest is already flagged as failed, so it's definitely programming fuckery and not just killing the wrong NPC too early.

Again, Obsidian support has already said they're aware of the problem and are working to fix it, which implies they understand it isn't just "Oops, you killed one random NPC and tanked an entire major questline" (though even if that WAS the case, that's shit-poor game design regardless). The problem is that there seems to be no way to avoid or fix it player-side, which means you can't use workarounds like "Don't go to X place before triggering Y step in the quest" or "Don't kill X NPC before completing Y step".

And because the player really has no control or way to prevent the bug from occurring, it means "Guess you'll have to start over and try again" isn't a viable solution either, because there's no guarantee you won't just hit the same bug again. Which becomes even more of a problem when you may have to play upwards of 20 hours before you even HIT that bug in the first place.
