Not spoiling anything in this post.

You are missing out if you've passed on the show. This last week was just amazing. Two more episodes left.

If you're watching it then you know

I fucking love both the movie and the graphic novel. Sucks that it has nothing to do with the movie.

Also, 30 years in the future means none of the familiar characters, I guess. So fuck that nonsense.

Aesthetics and everything that they did in the movie were spot on. It was very well done and held true to the novel in many ways...

But the fact that so many people walked away holding up Rorschach as any ideal or thinking any of the heroes were cool misses the point so dang hard

So does all the merch

You are right that it's not

The existence of that movie and flashy execution runs counter to the message of the novel and I'm not gonna back down on that

Snyder had Rorschach delivering sincerely exactly what the novel was trying to satirize, and he was given the light of a hero. Which was so far off.

Then there's the ending

I won't disagree, but even with everything that happened, I think the movie did a good job of showing how all of the capes sucked as people. The only time anyone looked "cool" is the prison stuff.

This is arguably the real problem - the show is just set in a similar sort of world that extrapolates from the original, but has almost nothing to do with it (other than cameos shoe-horned in to emphasis the connection). You could easily make this sort of show as a unique property that has almost nothing to do with the Watchmen brand at all and there'd be almost no meaningful difference.

For some people, that will be a positive (especially if they like the story being told, and didn't necessarily like or understand the context of the original). For others, it will be a negative (especially if they loved the original story, or find the new story to be pointless, derivative, or not as enjoyable). For Alan Moore, it will probably be an abomination and an atrocity bordering on war crime, but to be fair, Alan Moore hates everyone and everything so he was going to feel that way no matter what it was like (especially because he hates everything DC does with the universe outside of the original story).

If you're familiar with how dirty DC did Moore I wouldn't blame him for that at all

All right someone has definitely not watched this at all

It's a Lindelof show set in the Watchmen universe with existing characters. I'm trusting after watching The Leftovers that he can deliver a well crafted and planned out show. So far Watchmen has exceeded expectations. It's a remix not a reboot. You can enjoy the show with or without the comic knowledge, and if it leads you to the comic you'll only have more of the universe to enjoy with that discovery

The new characters they've introduced are great (lol Red Scare) and the old characters exist. Some even appear regularly.

There are direct events from the comics that are depicted in the show. It's taking place 34 years after the comic and showing how that shaped society, but not everything in the show takes place at the same time. I'm sure there's going to be even more from the comics brought in for the show.

Very good show. Not surprised since Lindelof ran my favorite show I've ever seen (The Leftovers), but yeah it has been really good, especially these past 3 episodes. Some of the stuff in the nostalgia episode is just perfect, and I have no idea how it is going to wrap itself up in these two final episodes after that game-changing moment at the end of episode 7, but I am incredibly excited to see what happens.

Yet the showrunners have been dropping hints about it in other ways. People figured it out because Laurie's dildo is named Excalibur. Or, Laurie's Ex, Cal Abar.

I have a knee-jerk disdain for anything that's a spin-off or reboot, especially if it's from a well-known work done by someone other than the original creators. So, hearing about a Watchmen TV series kinda caused me to gag.

That said, there'a fair amount of hype behind it, enough so that I might dip my toes in.

It's really not a spin off or reboot. If you enjoyed the comics you should check it out. It's quality from start to finish and loyal to the original material as well as the intent (which I can't say about the movie). But the show is not that story, and frankly that's a good thing

Just do it for Red Scare and Panda
