Specifically modern Wolfenstein games.

I'm interested in playing the games since they came back. Is it best to start with a certain game as in to play them in order? Or is it better to just start with the best game of them? Also, what's the best game of them? Nintendo's got some sales today and I'm trying to see if it's worth jumping in today.

The game's are very story/character heavy so it's important to play them in release order starting from The New Order. The best IMO is Wolfenstein II but all of the game's are more or less consistent with each other.

If it helps at all, it goes New Order > Old Blood > New Colossus > Youngblood.

Here's the thing: in terms of continuity, Wolfenstein is the Kingdom Hearts of shooters. It is ridiculously complex, with many releases in the canon on different platforms at least one of which you can't get easily any more. The current continuity goes like this:

Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Wolfenstein (2009)
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Wolfenstein: Youngblood

There is also Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, which is an alternate continuity prequel to The New Order. So Wolfenstein II is the fourth or fifth game in this continuity. Despite marketing TNO as a reboot it is a direct sequel to the 2009 game.

With that said, start with The New Order but before you do read synopses of or watch the cutscenes from RtCW and the 2009 game. The Old Blood is optional and can be played at any point but probably best after The New Blood.

I thought they were all canon, apart from TOB possibly being a remake of the first act of RtCW?

I was under the impression that later games mention Hitler, but with the hints that he might not be the real Hitler any more, but an undead puppet being controlled by the series' fictional villains.

Or was that just a theory that has since been debunked?

Welp, Switch doesn't have any of them newer than the New Colossus afterall...thought I saw New Order on there earlier, but oh well. Thanks for the advice!

Time to get Celeste and South Park: the Fractured but Whole instead.

Not having played any of these, I didn't realize the current gen titles continued the previous continuity at all. I assumed it was a hard reboot, maybe including Wolf3D but discarding the rest

Yup Caroline comes from the 2009 game and directly mentions events there. Deathshead is from RtCW and is also the main villain of 2009. Your mission description for the first mission of TNO references the 2009 game as well.

Wolf3D is not in the main story but may be canon in some way. And there are also the old Castle Wolfenstein games which are a totally different thing entirely.

Eh, Wolfenstein: New Order barely references any elements from Wolfenstein '09 or prior, and has little to do with the supernatural or occult themes of the previous games either. Old Blood was meant to be the summation of the earlier games condensed into a digestible prequel for the New Order.

Yeah, just start with The New Order. Those last two posts explained everything you need to know from the prior gen games. I think Game Pass should still have both The New Order and The New Colossus - that's how I played them! There's a lot of debate among fans which is better and personally I'm not sure I could even pick. They're both incredible. I really should play The Old Blood sometime too.

I also very much enjoyed the gameplay of Youngblood, for what it's worth. But yeah, it hardly has a story at all, which is a major letdown for a game in this series.
