"I don't hate them at all," he said. "And some of them I have great respect for, and great love for, almost. Some of them were so compassionate and such lovely, lovely people. And it really led me to think about... how did they end up like this?"

Taliban was US's ally during cold war, but many people think that they're the same as ISIS or alqaeda.

i remember reading an article that more Afghanistan people died in the hand of their own government and US Army than the Taliban.

It's kinda odd but possible I guess.

Im not sure if and when you can declare that. His remarks seem lucid and rational (that he would rather have not gone through it but the time that he did gave him some new perspective as well).

Given his background as a professor, this surely seems like something that will inspire him to write a book about his experience.

in some civilized countries, deathrow inmates are treated nicely until their execution. so i guess it's not that odd.

These aren't civilized countries. While the Taliban isn't as bad as ISIS prisoners are routinely tortured and gang raped. One thing these groups do though is find the desperate and use them. A lot of the suicide bombers are promised money for their families by these terrorist groups, and many non storming fighters, meaning they don't blow themselves as a last resort after shooting a place up, are physically and mentally handicapped. So many lower level members are abused and manipulated...the huge majority are evil fucking scum though.

Mr Weeks and Mr King, also an academic, were freed this month in exchange for three senior militants held by the Afghan authorities, in a deal aimed at kick-starting peace talks.

Straight from the article.

I've heard these stories by other hostages. I think we're used to sensationalized hostage situations and not the reality in some cultures.

The Taliban is a local Islamic "government" because they're very tribal over there. It's basically the people in the most rural and isolated areas deciding they don't want to be governed by state law and deciding to govern themselves using religious fundamentalist law. Imagine if some rural areas in the american south decided "fuck the government" and then enacted theocratic christian law

Al Qaeda is the international terrorist organization with international religious and political goals. They basically have nothing to do with each other except that they're allies

They're only allies in so far as they both hate a lot of the same people. If they were the only two groups left on Earth they'd be killing each other the way they're doing now to other innocent people.

yeah they have some pretty massive disagreements in their goals. allies of convenience would be a better term I guess

Also maybe this. Makes it easier to think you are a good person if you are kind to people except when you do what is necessary
like toss em in a hole in the ground, deprive them of freedom and maybe behead them later.

the taliban movement didn't exist during the cold war lol, it was a direct result of the corrupt warlord movements that sprung up in the aftermath of the post Soviet conflict civil war.

Neither one of those countries puts missiles in people's front yards and kills them if they complain about suddenly being a target for Israeli missiles like Hamas does.
