What is Game of the Month Club?
Game of the Month is a community project open to all B8ers where users share, discover, play and/or discuss a select few games every month. The games featured each month are chosen by YOU the users (and Lady Luck)

The Basics
- Each month will usually feature three games that were chosen via a random drawing from a pool of games that users nominated
- For each game you beat, you get a cool point on our just-for-fun standings as well as a nomination for next month's randomized drawing
- In order to receive the point and nomination, you must beat said game within the calendar month
- If you beat one of the current month's games in the previous month, you can apply for a "recently beaten waiver," but you will only receive a point and no nomination should you do so
- Drawing for next month's games is usually around a week before the end of the month
- If you periodically keep us posted on your progress and/or talk about different aspects of the games, then everyone will think you are super awesome!

Nomination Rules
- You get one nomination automatically each month
- You receive additional nominations each month for every chosen game that you beat
- Each game you nominate has to be unique from all other nominations and cannot include a game that has already been selected for GotM
- Each game must be a standalone game that can be acquired and played on its own (aka cannot be DLC/expansion that requires the base game)
- Nominations only carry over if you beat a chosen game after the drawing for next month's games but before the end of the month

Guacamelee 2 is available for both XB1 and PC Game Pass

Batman: Arkham Asylum is available for XB1 Game Pass

Several games are on sale for Steam until Dec. 3rd. Usually they end their sales around 11 AM to 2 PM ET:

Batman: Arkham Asylum -$5 USD
https://store.steampowered.com/app/35140/Batman_Arkham_Asylum_Game_of_the_Year_Edition/

Super Cloudbuilt - $4 (I still have one key to give away)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/463700/Super_Cloudbuilt/

Cloudbuilt - $5 (I have no idea what advantages the original might have over the "remastered remake" but both are eligible for the purposes of GotM)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/262390/Cloudbuilt/

Guacamelee 2 - $4

I still have one Steam key for Super Cloudbuilt for anyone who intends to make the effort to beat it this month and will also add to or start any discuss of the game and/or their progress through it.

Also, Guacamelee 2 is part of the Steam Remote Play Together feature where people can play local co-op games online through that feature. Both Lolo and myself have expressed interest in doing the co-op campaign together, and the game supports up to four players, so we are welcome to adding more. Only one person has to own the game, and both Lolo and myself do own it, so there would be no need for anyone else to buy it if they wish.

I have yet to test out the basics of SRPT, but it shouldn't be complicated. I think it is simple as the host starting the game and inviting people through a special menu and the rest accepting the invite. I know it is still in beta or still having its kinks work out, so there could be some technical issues here and there, but ultimately I am not concerned with that. My only concern is voice chat for those who would be willing to do so. To be safe, I suggest we use one of the voice chats in our Discord channel instead of using the in-game one for Guacamelee 2 based on past experience that I have had with co-op Steam game voice chats.

Next, for those who didn't see, I have usually run an annual special theme each year. I have done games to celebrate holidays, game anniversaries, and having users select games that failed to be drawn on a given month. In 2020, we will be doing a birthday theme where each interested user PMs me their birthday month. In the month before their birthday, said users will submit to me two games that follow the normal nomination rules (can't have been done before and can be acquired on its own), and the rest of the users will vote which game will be used to celebrate their birthday.

This will replace one of the drawings, but users have control over what gets chosen at least. If two users have the same birthday month, which I just found out someone else has a January birthday, we will have two sets of voting and two games still drawn, bringing a total of four games for said month. If 3+ users have the same birthday, I will likely ask someone if they would be willing for me to feature them in another month or if push comes to shove, I will forcibly change how every many users I need to other months until only two are on a particular month.

I have my games ready, but because I want to introduce these votes together, I will hold off until I receive notice from the other user which games they are putting up. In the meantime, feel free to sign up for this event. As I said, all I need for you to do right now is PM me your birthday month, and I will take care of things from there. Including me, six people have signed up thus far.

So, uh, about that maybe not playing through Super Cloudbuilt thing?

I got one of the endings in Super Cloudbuilt.

Not sure that that's sufficient to count it as beating it (I'm definitely going to get as many endings as I can,) but I thought it'd be funnier if I said I beat it on the first day. Needless to say, I liked it a lot. The platforming feels amazing, the controls and sense of speed are perfect, and the OST is phenomenal (I remember liking a couple of songs from VGMC, but everything here is great, too.) Combat can drag the pacing down a bit, but I enjoyed it more often than not, and the art style is very pretty. The story/writing hasn't done anything for me so far, but they never get in the way. Fantastic game so far, really glad it got nominated. Thanks again for the key, KCF!

ArkOfTurus has beaten Super Cloudbuilt

I think? I beat all the numbered doors and got four endings. There are the skull doors, but apparently they were DLC in the original Cloudbuilt, so I'm going to say good enough. Judging by the skull level I tried/looked up a video of, I am never beating them.

I plan to start Super Cloudbuilt no later than tomorrow.

I started Arkham Asylum late last night and have reached the point where the game has been opened up for you to explore where your equipment/abilities allow you to. As was the case a decade ago, I am addicted to solving all of The Riddler's riddles. I was only planning on playing Asylum, and I'm sure things can change from now until when I finished, but I am also have a hankering for playing City as well since both of the remastered versions are on Game Pass.

Finally, and I'm sure you have seen my message @Lolo_Guru , but I tested out the invite basics for Guacamelee 2, and they are what I thought. You just use the shift+tab function in-game, highlight a friend from your list, and an option for inviting through Remote Play Together should be there. Nobody else has expressed interest thus far, so it appears it might just be you and I playing it. I don't care who hosts, but I am assuming that progress is only saved to the host, so we should be consistent about it. If you care quite a bit about achievements, I am more than willing to allow you to host because I am operating on the assumption that they only unlock for the host.

I know that we have a three hour time difference and last I knew, you worked evenings/graveyard shift. If afternoons ET work best for you, I can swing that. Weekends might be an issue for me as I might be gone for at least one of Saturday/Sunday in each of the next two weekends, but with this being a roughly 10 hour game, we should be able to knock this out before Christmas.

ArkOfTurus has beaten Super Metroid

Final time of 6:23, 80% items collected.

It's been a long time since I've played it last. The things that used to bug me back then still bug me now (especially the over-reliance on hidden blocks,) and I found myself wishing for a better map pretty often, but it's still a very fun game, and I'm glad I finally got around to playing it again.

Played through most of super metroid sunday. Called it a day after getting the Space Jump. Save file is 2:29, I guess not bad for playing for the first time in I dunno probably a decade or so and not really going out of my way to get items. Though I lost a ridiculous amount of time trying to figure out how to get to Draygon since I went past the grapple block area, got the missle/super missle in that one dead end, then left back since I didn't remember where the passage was and left back to the room with the grapple blocks and I had to do that again. So between that and getting turned around a bit looking for the speed booster and crocmire in norfair earlier I probably won't be able to get the best ending, but it doesn't seem too out of reach for me.

It really strikes me as how horrible I was at games when I was younger. Like I mean I was so bad at games I couldn't really manage to do any sort of command input that requires double tapping like running. (so, so bad at games). now imagine how I must have felt the first time I fell in the wall jump pit. now, I'm not great at it but I can actually wall jump a little bit successfully. also, despite not gathering many energy tanks or any reserve tanks I haven't had too much trouble with the bosses despite struggling a lot with most of them back when I first played this. like I got to phantoon not at full health or ammo and still won first try (though it was a bit close) ha ha back when I was younger I thought you had to jump over phantoon's waves of fireballs and didn't realize you could shoot them until a later playthrough. Ridley's probably going to be fun though without going out of my way to get more energy tanks.

probably finish it when I get back to playing it (since I just started playing Scarlet Grace yesterday).

I've been working day shift this week; 8am-3:30pm through friday, 6am-2:30pm saturday and sunday.
I have taken the 10th and 11th off of work as that's two mandatory weekends in a row and I'd like to use that time to set up my new computer, which should have arrived by the 10th.

Any problem holding off on starting it until the 10th? I can probably swing almost any time those two days, and we can figure out a schedule for the rest if we don't finish it those two days.

As far as super metroid, got the morph ball and the first two sets of missiles! Moving so slow on this.

I started Cloudbuilt, and wow I can tell that if the opening level is considered a 0 (or maybe it was 1) difficulty, I am going to get my ass continuously kicked. I'm actually pretty damn good (in my own head) at improvising, but my wall-running skills really suck. I'm just not getting it somehow in this game. There was a long section of wall running, and I just used my rocket boost (or whatever it is called) to get to the top of all the walls and run and rocket jump my way to the end of the section. I will certainly come across similar situations where the tops of the walls will have spikes on them. I am not looking forward to that.

I got much further in Arkham Asylum. My files says 24% complete, but I think that includes stuff like the challenges and predator rooms. I thought the intense sewer section with Killer Croc was earlier than this, but it is almost sounding as if I might be dealing with Poison Ivy first.

I did one more level in Super Cloudbuilt, I want to say it was something along the lines of Regrowth, and I made a concerted effort to get all the letter and extra life keys. They stick out with their glow and beam of light from the sky, yet I somehow reached the end only finding 2/5.

I think there were only two levels (not counting the practice one) in the entire game that I found 5/5 keys in the first time. It's part of why I don't know how much I want to try the extra hard levels. I know I'd have to go back and find at least almost every life key.

well.

Took four or five tries to beat Ridley, since I only had 5 energy tanks going into the fight. >_> funny how that's probably less effort to beat Ridley than it took me back in the day (although one time I still managed to """"beat"""" the first ridley fight when I was younger despite being terrible at video games <_<)

currently saved at the start of Tourian with 3:10 on the timer, so I was pretty much right that getting turned around a bit in Maridia killed my chance of getting the best ending this run.

would have went ahead and finished it, but it was like 2 in the morning at the time and I died on mother brain because I didn't know that it was actually possible for her hyper beam attacks to kill you if you don't have enough energy tanks left, >_>

KCF has beaten Batman: Arkham Asylum

I decided to wait to beat the game until I finished all of the Riddler stuff. I only had to look up two of the 240 things for him, and were they about riddles, hidden "?" symbols, or trophies? Nooooooo. I had trouble finding Joker Teeth in Arkham Mansion and Arkham East. I couldn't find sufficient help (I didn't want to watch a video) for the East teeth, so I decided to move onto the next part, and I found them hanging out near the door I was heading into.

I also played quite a bit more of Super Cloudbuilt. I ran across a level with extended wall-running segments where they drain you of your boost, so uh, I have concerns about being able to beat this game.

However, I cleared out I want to say Willow and Elm levels, and I was working my way through Maple. The number kept getting higher and higher, but I was doing fine and feeling pretty great about beating 6 and 8-rated levels. I got to My Inspiration, a 9, and pretty brutal enemy placement. I was doing okay, and I ultimately hit the last fixed checkpoint. Including the manual checkpoint life replenishment, I had about 30 lives remaining. I liked my chances. I eventually came to the conclusion after losing a few lives to simply run away from everything, but there was always one invincible flying enemy that follows you. That forces me to rush a little when wall running/jumping with all the purple mines, and running and shooting in this game is not my strong suit. I had to watch in horror as my lives went from 30 to 0. I am devastated that I spent an hour or so on one level, reached the last stretch, and failed over and over. I don't know when I will want to resume again.

Beat Super Metroid

3:22, 62% completion.

could have done better, but I was still playing pretty casually and it's not like I was ever able to get the good ending or 100% completion when I was younger (I probably only bothered to get somewhere in the 85-90% range due to not wanting to bother with getting certain pickups, and I hate to think about my actual time).

boy I sure had an embarrassing time with tourian though. took me about as much effort to beat Mother Brain and escape as it did to beat Ridley but I was being kind of sloppy there at the end I guess. overall had at least 4-5 deaths to ridley, 4-5 deaths trying to beat the game, 1 to the golden torizo, and 1 trying to go through heat rooms in norfair without the varia suit.

I made tremendous progress in Super Cloudbuilt. In fact, I may just have three levels remaining. The lack of appropriate menus and poor visual designs to let you know which levels you have beaten/completed/not beaten makes it tough for me to to be certain of that claim, especially since I jump around from wing-to-wing, corridor-to-corridor.

If I am right though that the optional double skull doors are revealed as soon as you gain access to a wing's final level, then along with being done with Oak (I know I have to be done with that as an achievement notification popped up), then I am at the final levels for the Maple, Hawthorn, and Ash wings. Maple and Ash's final levels were both ones that I lost all of my lives in, while I have yet to try Hawthorn's.

I am now up to nearly 50 lives, and I haven't messed around with items/equipment/weapons yet, but I may look into them more to see if their descriptions jump out to me as being super helpful.

KCF has beaten Super Cloudbuilt

I beat all four wings, and since an achievement popped up with the name "The Truth Revealed?" I am considering it beaten.

The hardest non-skull level for me was Redeployment. I had 57 lives, which includes the seven I manual checkpoints give. It was challenging from start to finish, but I still had 50+ by the time I reached the upward spiral section that has you avoid the red and purple traps while wall-running, wall-climbing, and wall-jumping that turns into the straight section with various turrets shooting at you, which culminates in more red and purple traps as you head upwards and into a wall-jump backwards to the finish. I beat it with my second-to-last life. That was intense!

Since all the mechanics are fresh in my mind, I plan on attempting the skull levels at any rate. I finally looked at all these things I accumulated, and some of them seem to be helpful, such as a weapon that can slow down time and gear that increased my boost meter. I haven't tried them out yet, but maybe they will make the skull levels beatable for me.

Anyway, I had a blast with this game. It was a challenging game done right. I think that the game could have been better without the weapons/combat, but I know that would change the whole dynamic of the game. The only thing that I really question is the inclusion of lives. The game was already very challenging in its own right. Why even add a lives system? That just seems like overkill to me.

Yeah, my first skull room began with a bunch of hallways with turrets and robot spiders galore. The second began with extensive wall-running with snipers at the end of each wall. I think that I may try out ranked and rush mode, then I will call it quits for the month.
