#125 Dragonforce - My Heart Will Go On
Rating: 5/10
Have I Heard this before?: Yes, but not this version
Nominator: @Janus5k (5/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_vppOp5vec

I like sappy Titanic music, and I like Dragonforce! For those of you here who have known me these years, it's clear that power metal/melodic speed metal is my favorite genre of music, but man what is this?! This is something that absolutely does not mash well at all! The high energy exerted here does not match the tone of the original, and even for something as cheesy as power metal, this song does not work in the style. I've also heard Dragonforce's cover of Ring of Fire and felt the same way, so this might just be a DF thing. I think it's mostly just the blast beat speed metal drumming here that messes everything up. With that all said, I actually like a lot of power metal covers of non-metal songs, so who knows! One of my favorite guilty pleasures is the Northern Kings' cover of Kiss from a Rose. ;>_>

Rating: 5/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @paulg235 (4/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z22seoMxgpI

I've honestly never heard of this show before. Everything about this just screams '90s animation. Judging entirely off of this animation sequence, it looks like yet another X-Men clone vying for its brief time in the spotlight. The song itself is completely average and doesn't have anything memorable going for it. Maybe it'd be better if it was longer than one minute long, but as is it's just kind of there. I can see it working for its time period. Who knows, maybe this is a hidden gem!

At the risk of sounding like some sort of uncultured barbarian who lives under a rock,at this time I must admit that I have never watched Star Trek. Which is to say, if there are any clever references in this music video, they are all lost on me. The song itself is pretty chill though, even if I don't get it.

This is the sort of '50s Jazz my grandmother would've listened to. I can't say this is my favorite thing from the era, but this would fit right in in an oldies album, or maybe an American diner or something. It works for what it's trying to do.

Rating: 5/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @azuarc (4/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7R-PSvvziU

The biggest thing that sets this apart from the previous alternative rock tracks is the singer's distinct voice. It has this high-pitched nasal sound to it that really stands out. I'm not even sure if I like it, but the fact it stands out at all is something I see as a positive. This has a very late-'90s vibe going on and I can very much picture listening to this on the radio back then (maybe I have heard this before after all?)

I can't say I've ever listened to Brazilian folk music before, and I don't think I would've ever stumbled upon this on my own, so I gotta respect this choice for nomination. I'm not too crazy about the singer's voice, but I'm enjoying the guitar here. Maybe this would be better if I knew Portuguese. We're starting to reach the higher end of the 5.0 nominations here, since this has a few things I quite like.

#119 Menage - Memory from Cats (Disco Remix)
Rating: 5/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @Anagram (4/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA4bKJUDn7o

I've never seen Cats in any of its adaptations, and all I know about it is that it recently had a movie released recently that was very poorly received. This song definitely sounds like your standard disco, with the main thing standing out is how crispy this audio quality in the YouTube video is. I'm not sure if it's just the upload, or if the actual studio mixing is this bad, but this sounds like ass. The song itself isn't bad though, I can see adding a few points to this with better quality. I've heard better disco, and worse.

Nominator: @cakophon (4/5)

Cool DnB thing going on here. My only real gripe with this is that its repetition makes it feel really short, even though it's 3 minutes long. Adding in some changeups to the melody would benefit this strongly. All-in-all not bad (I may have even underranked this), but it doesn't do enough to stand out.

#117 Mobile Suit Gundam SEED - Tobe! Freedom
Rating: 5.1/10

We're finally out of the 5.0 songs, woohoo! This is exactly the kind of triumphant fanfare you find in every single classic mecha anime. I dig orchestral music, but this isn't something I'd specifically remember when looking back on a soundtrack. It gets the job done, but loses points on originality factor and brevity.

To be honest, I've never liked Grunge Rock, but I've always had a preference for Alice in Chains over the other big names in the genre, primarily due to their Heavy Metal influence. The vocals aren't doing it for me, but this is saved by the really dark sounding guitar riffs, almost Doom Metal-esque.

#115 Kaguya-sama: Love is War - chikatto chika chika

Well, this one sure is a tone shift from the last song. I've never seen this anime, but one of my former co-workers would always meme about this show. This sounds like your standard anime song yep, this is definitely anime music. If I were grading this on her sick dance moves, this would probably be like, a 7/10 or something. This is the same routine I do every morning getting ready for work.

Nominator: @Bane_Of_Despair (4/5)

Some pretty standard Christian rock right here, featuring the typical happy chord progressions and not offering much variation. It works as easy listening soft rock, but manages to not be particularly engaging.

#113 Dire Straits - On Every Street
Rating: 5.3/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @SuperbVEVO (5/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTLv8BqQVi8

Dire Straits is one of those classic rock bands everyone knows, but I don't think I've ever went out of my way to listen to any of their material (not saying it's bad or anything). I don't remember having heard this song before, although I very well may have. The only real problem this has is that somber rock ballads all sound sort of samey, but I gotta give credit for the nice guitar work at the end of the song.

Rating: 5.4/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @NowItsAngeTime (4/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTq-cjgN8rI

This track comprises a bunch of calming and soothing new-age guitar, sort of reminding me of some of the stuff from the MapleStory soundtrack. Stylistically, I quite like this kind of thing, but I wish it threw in some more stuff to spice it all up. It's kind of a short loop, and could've placed a good deal higher with more going on.

Rating: 5.5/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @Raka_Putra (4/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAhgX7RleDQ

Musical music! I kinda feel that listening to soundtracks from musicals without knowing any of the context dampens the impact a bit. I do respect all the energy in this though, even though I don't get what's going on (Some guy being very happy to be alive apparently!)

#110 Jackyl - The Lumberjack

I must admit, hair metal has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. This might just be the most redneck song I have ever heard in my life, but I can't say I've ever heard someone use a chainsaw as a musical instrument. That alone earns these guys my respect. This song has a neat novelty factor to it.

Oh hi, another non-YouTube link. Instrument-wise, this has that signature late-'00s/early-'10s indie VGM sound. I don't really know if I like that weird dissonant melody in at the start of this song, but the second half sounds pretty cool. Also, this is pretty short and I would've liked to see this go on for a bit longer, but instead it just suddenly cuts out at the end there. All in all, not bad though.

Rating: 5.6/10
Have I heard this before?: Yes, but not this version
Nominator: @Place (5/5)

I distinctly remember hearing the original version of this song somewhere before, but I've never actually seen the show that this is from. I don't like this one as much (the original would score somewhere in the mid 6 range). The instruments used here sound kinda weird and clash with the vibes of this. Anyways, this is still good enough to place here, and I dig the vocals in this. Pretty trippy.

I find it kind of hard to give this a fair rating because I can't listen to this and not hear Radiohead - Creep. This gives the feeling of wow this is pretty good, but it just sounds like another song that does this same thing, but better. On its own merit, it does have a trippy everything is falling apart stoner rock vibe to it, so that's pretty cool.

This sounds like the background music they throw in every indie art student film project. This is pretty repetitive and more something I'd imagine to be context-dependent than something to be listened to on its own, but I'm fond of the instrument choice here. This starts out with spooky Haunted Mansion vibes then you get the cool whistle, and my favorite part later on, the accordion. This works.

#105 Dragon Ball Super - Fierce Battle Against a Mighty Foe
Rating: 5.8/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @NowItsAngeTime (3/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH65j2kwR2U

Man, I need to get back around to watching Dragon Ball Super. I was always the biggest DB fan, but I just kinda dropped out of it all one day. As far as Dragon Ball soundtracks go, I've always been more into the localized soundtrack by Bruce Faulconer or the video game soundtracks by Kenji Yamamoto (R.I.P. his career). This is actually not bad though, this has a chaotic orchestra that builds up a really tense atmosphere, and that classic anime string ensemble added in for a sense of despair. Looking back, I may have ranked this one a bit too low (but I'm not changing anything now, too late for that!)

Ah, classic early-'00s PC game MIDI, one of my guilty pleasures. This track is giving me some strong AoE2 vibes (same developer but different composer apparently). We're getting into tracks that I'm running out of negative things to say about! This doesn't have the same level of unique charm as some of the AoE2 stuff I'm more familiar with, but it makes up for it with a really chill vibe. (Again, maybe I ranked this one a bit too low?)

#103 BitBurner - Don't Shoot Food
Rating: 5.9/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @Fluttershy_Pony (2/5)

What stands out about this one is how immediately balls-to-the-wall abrasive this is. (This is a good thing!) I'm still a bit iffy on the Minecraft sound samples here (at least I'm assuming that's what those are), but they're used in such a crazy way that I gotta respect this. Go hard or go home, I guess.

Rating: 5.9/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @Place (4/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh_g1SFd-00

Here's one that I have pretty mixed feelings on. This one has some really high high points that make me think WOW this is really cool. The intro has some crazy techno beats, and I have nothing but good things to say about the instruments used throughout this. At parts it even reminds me a bit of the G Darius soundtrack (one of my faves), and I love that cool little skip at 3:17. Unfortunately, I do not care for the lead vocals in this, they sound sort of flat. It kinda clashes with all the other stuff going on here.

#101 Loretta Lynn & Ernest Tubb - Our Hearts are Holding Hands
Rating: 6/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @Snake5555555555 (3/5)

As much as I can't stand the poppy country music played these days, there's something about the classics that just sound pleasant. This song is short and sweet, and overall just nice to listen to. This sounds like something I'd hear at a family get-together.

Lore music is always pretty cool. I've never been able to get into the Lord of the Rings franchise (I actually feel asleep during one of the movies ), but high fantasy stuff is something I've always enjoyed and I might be willing to give it another try some other time. Cool medieval-y chorus singing in this, it sounds like something you'd hear being sung at the Renaissance fair.

I like how angry this sounds, it reminds me of Death Grips. Heavy beat here, with lots of energy. It's a lot different than the pop rap I'm used to (admittedly I'm not too well acquainted with the rap/hip-hop genre in general, but there's a few hits I really like). Crazy lyrics here, but in a good way.

Ah yes, Civ V. At 805 hours, this is my current most-played Steam game. This game has a neat soundtrack, and I like how it incorporates a lot of national tunes and classical music. Even at over 800 hours, I don't really remember this one all that much though. It certainly works as a war theme with its foreboding and ominous tone, but my favorite from this game is still Shaka's war theme. On an unrelated note, England is a pretty fun faction to play as.

#97 Kung Fu Panda - Oogway Ascends
Rating: 6/10

Kung Fu Panda is a movie I didn't see until 10 or so years after its release. All I remember about this movie is that the panda was voiced by Jack Black. I don't remember the movie being bad or anything, but it wasn't an instant classic like Shrek or Shrek 2. This song is nice background music you hear playing at the local Chinese restaurant. It's exactly the kind of music you'd expect to hear from a film titled Kung Fu Panda. Again, decent but not memorable.

This is actually sort of catchy though, upbeat and energetic with a unique lyrical theme. I've given it the same rating as the last few songs, but this one stands out the most amongst all the 6/10s. This is maybe a bit too EDM-ish for my tastes, but I like that it does its own thing.

#95 Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 - Pac Level Cap (3 Minutes)
Rating: 6/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @cakophon (3/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoZOc1HwRE4

Another electronic song here, less memorable than the last one (for better or for worse). Overall this is just kinda okay, but it gets better listening to each little bit of this individually. It works well as Pacman music (could maybe see this playing on the Smash Bros Pacman stage). It ranks on the higher end of background music.

#94 Dirt Poor Robins - But Never a Key
Rating: 6/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @NBIceman (5/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gJRAzqK7yg

This one is actually also a pretty memorable pick, standing out mostly due to its really artsy sounding lyrics. The backing instruments are reminiscient of that earlier Shape of Water song, but this one has neat lyrics and a few more interesting things going on to push this further up (down? however you visualize it) the ranking. The song is okay, but I like the idea of poetry in music form that they were going for here. I also like the style of the music video here (although videos aren't really taken into account for ranking).

We are done with the 6.0s, I promise!

#93 Antonin Dvorak - Symphony No. 9, Movement 4 (RSE Soundfont)
Rating: 6.2/10
Have I heard this before?: Yes, but not this version
Nominator: @pyresword (4/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3jXr2E2MW0

Ah yes, Dvorak's Symphony from the New World. Probably my favorite piece of classical music ever, now in the Pokmon R/S/E soundfont! Such a powerful musical work of art, now in the goofiest instrument set possible. Listening to this makes me feel like I'm on the S.S. Anne, and all of a sudden a giant killer Sharpedo appeared and started attacking the boat and now it's going to capsize.

There are parts in this song where it gets all quiet, but it doesn't really work with a GBA soundfont. There's a cool novelty factor with this song, but it's just too silly for me to take seriously at all.

DPR do love their artsy lyrics. They're mostly a concept album band so some of their stuff can seem especially abstract out of context, but it's always interesting to see what people think the first time they hear them.

#92 Pokmon 2000 - Lugia's Song
Rating: 6.2/10
Have I heard this before?: Yes
Nominator: @GavsEvans123 (2/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqpXrDuLqE0

Another Pokmon song! Of all the early Pokmon movies, this one I've always felt was sort of a disappointment, never really living up to the hype. A year back or so, I started rewatching the Pokmon movies in order with my two roommates, and unfortunately it turns out I liked this movie even less than I had previously thought. Anyways, the song itself works for the movie, but it doesn't feel as impactful as a lot of other music from the Pokmon anime, nor as enjoyable as the super-cheesy soundtrack from The First Movie. But, it's still pretty nice, and I feel it fits for Lugia (who has always been one of my favorite legendaries).

#91 R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 - Pearl Blue Soul
Rating: 6.2/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @cakophon (2/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7qFf6jF5WQ

I've seen a lot of Ridge Racer music been thrown around B8 and the B8 VGM Discord channel as of late. In general, it's all pretty decent, and I feel the same about this one. This track is a bit repetitive, but makes up for it with all the cool sounds being sampled. In particular, I quite like the jazzy flute that shows up from time to time.

And with that, that puts two of our nominators in the DANGER ZONE

#90 Brand New - 451
Rating: 6.3/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @Snake5555555555 (2/5)

This sounds like it could be the opening theme to a cult classic Netflix original mini-series, loved by many but seen by few. We've got Rock 'n Roll with a heavy Blues influence here. I've never actually cared much for Blues, but a lot of that is in its tendency to have poor production value, but this avoids that problem and actually manages to stand up pretty well. This manages to be pretty good despite not being a genre I typically listen to very often.

#89 Clamavi De Profundis - When the Hammer Falls
Rating: 6.3/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @Anagram (2/5)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm96Cqu4Ils

Everything I've said about the previous Clamavi De Profundis song also applies to this one, and I feel about the same. I like the energy in this one a bit more, and the whole aspect of it being battle music is neat. Again though, I can see this being better knowing the LotR context and whatnot.

Two more onto the chopping block! Who will be our first ELIMINATION?? who knows....

This is actually so spot on!

451 is definitely in my top 5 of Brand New songs. The chorus just hits like a freight train, then comes back to run you over for good-measure, and being preluded by the spoken word line each time gives us such an ethereal feeling to me. And that bridge right before the last chorus is amazing.

Here's a weird little Mario song I never knew existed! If this is from the movie, I've never seen that either. If not, it totally could work in a Mario movie (or maybe even a Mario musical?). Another song scoring decently off of its novelty factor more than anything else, but it is a fun tune. (Reading the YouTube comments, this is in some way official??)

#87 DV-i - Emotion Engine
Rating: 6.3/10
Have I heard this before?: No
Nominator: @MycroProcessor (5/5)

(psst hey, if you're reading this would you rather I ping you on your new account?)

Whenever I listen to these DV-i tracks I think of the Aurora Memoria soundtrack, are they by the same composer? It has that same very distinct vibe. Like the others, it has that very spacey computery sound to it, complete with the sound of someone even typing on a keyboard in the background at the beginning. I've always found it cool just how many different sounds this composer likes to make use of. My favorite part is that little melodic section starting around 2:30 in, and the way it fades out in the outro.

Oh no my first nom to go! Though I had a feeling it would be the first because it was less clearly your thing than my other picks, but I picked it because I knew you liked Aurora Memoria and Custom Robo and Super Monkey Ball 2 and other similar things!

Also yeah DV-i is the Aurora Memoria composer! I thought you knew that! lol. or maybe I am being dense and you are being silly and pretending that you don't know

also yeah pinging me on my new account is how to go, not really planning on using my old one anymore.
