It was a fast decade, 2010 seems like yesterday. A lot changed in my life. I'm thankful for the success life has brought me, but I'm sad that my social group that so greatly defined my life in the early 2010s is mostly no more. I really miss that.

The 2020s will surely bring even more change to my life. If I marry and have kids, it's going to happen in the 2020s.

2010-2019

Good;

The internet has really helped the US's political situation, people don't have to rely solely on big news outlets anymore.

VR

Bad;

Pop music is actually complete garbage. Seriously, Taylor Swift and her robotic formulaic music produced by a team of bald analysts desperately trying to figure out what bait young people will take is all I ever hear anymore. I used to kind of like pop, but now it's shit.

I got older.

"The future" is basically smartphones everywhere. They don't even look that different.

Donald Trump/Obama continued to bomb the shit out of the middle east despite no one wanting them to.

This is what happens as you get older. Every decade seems faster than the last, time seems to speed by, and you occasionally realize that things that feel like they just happened yesterday actually happened like 8 years ago.

That sucks. That means as you get older, even you feel like you're running out of time faster...

That's also why every year, when you talk about the end of the year, everyone says how fast it went...

I have a hunch that this is due to people getting jobs, where they train themselves to make the day go by as fast as possible.

Maybe people just get too good at it.

It's just because you've lived longer. If you're 5 years old, one year seems like a lot because it's one fifth of the entire time you've been alive. After 30 years, one year is just smaller by comparison

And in the same vein, it's why when you're a kid it can feel like waiting for something takes absolutely forever, but as an adult you feel like you never have enough time to do all the things you need/want to do.

And then you die.

I'd disagree with this, if only because I know people who are retired or unemployed who have the same outlook. If it was just related to work, they should be closer to the childlike perspective of time than the adult one.

It's far more likely to be related to a sense of perspective and scale. As a kid you only have a few years behind you compared to a seemingly infinite future stretching out forever in front of you. But as you get older the past starts getting longer and longer while the future gets shorter and shorter.

It may also relate to the simplicity of outlook and general lack of responsibilities on the part of kids versus the more complicated time balancing requirements of most adults.

Worst decade by far for me, and most of it was like a journey into hell.

2000-2009 had it's ups and downs, but over all was a busy decade where I got alot acomplished and pushed myself in new ways.

2010-2019 Started off horrid, with my wife getting sick and me spending months in the hospital with her, then when our insurance cut us off, having to bring her home and take care of her for 4-5 years while she slowly recovered. Was hard on both of us. I also lost my mobile home (only worth 40k back then, but worth about $250k now) because I couldn't get away/there to save it). Finally get her better, moved to WA and she died within a year. Have not recovered from that and have just had a bunch of health issues as well.

I'm hoping 2020-2029 (if I live that long) will be better. Trying to focus on the good things, and technology has certainly improved so who knows what is coming next. Last decade sucked balls though.

The last 10 years was me being in the military. Some good things happen, like getting my pets, a truck, and my BF. Some bad things happened, like moving into the house I'm in now, and never having enough money for stuff. But overall, it was ok. And now that things seem to be getting better, I think I'll start the 2020s off pretty good... Hopefully...

The 2010s were definitely rough. Maybe some of the worst since my pre-twenties. I've tried twice now to condense this post, and maybe I got it this time, but holy shit was that an awful period.

Between having to come to terms with how everything I worked toward in the 00s was now off the menu by 2010, having my industry contacts, career prospects, and finances completely rebooted, dealing with being in an abusive relationship that I couldn't afford to leave, one that caused me years of misery, one whose instability threatened to leave me homeless, penniless, and stranded in an unfamiliar city with no way home, the sudden loss of a dear loved one, someone who'd supported me in every sense (morally, emotionally, financially), getting out of that abusive situation and into another stressful living arrangement with too many characteristics similar to the previous abusive one, dealing with legal problems both civil and criminal, and both total BS, having to support my SO through two different long term health crises, both of which had end-of-life implications in either a literal or practical sense...between all that, I nearly fucking killed myself. By around 2017 I was just done. Not even depressed, just done.

And that is the short version.

It wasn't really until 2018 that things even remotely started moving again, and even that overlapped somewhat with the time period I was looking after my SO. So I'm still playing catch-up with that.

@wolfy42

I can relate.

I prefer to evaluate decades with the benefit of hindsight. Most of it is too recent. Granted, I'm thinking more about the arts, politics, and culture when I say that, whereas a bunch people in this topic seem to be focused on their lives. On a personal level, the decade has had a few low points and deaths -- many within the last few years -- so on the whole, it's been more negative than positive (or, at least, the negative events seem to stand out more than the positive ones).

I will say that the increasing mismanagement of CT -- where Ned Lamont replaced Dan Malloy and seems hellbent on fucking things up even more than he did, attacking industry and introducing new regressive taxes -- has given me serious thoughts about finally moving to a less-awful state.

This was the decade where I really zoned out on gaming, which I at least partly blame on Nintendo effectively exiting the handheld market when it decided to merge its home consoles and handhelds to create a system that does neither thing all that well.

This was the decade where I (kinda) got into music thanks to the genius of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. Granted, it's still more musicals than all other kinds and, besides Hamilton, I wasn't terribly impressed or intrigued by most of the new musicals coming out in this decade so I wound up enjoying older works.

Television has been pretty good. As always, quite a few shows I liked didn't last and streaming -- which initially had been a massive boon -- has become fragmented. Movies have been a mixed bag, although I absolutely loved Hobo with a Shotgun.

A lot of it is probably some form of memory degradation, since events in our minds wind up getting compressed. Otherwise if you're constantly busy, you can lose track of time.

Plus even children try to make things they dislike go by faster.

It's still one of the better decades for America. Turmoil at home is the worst since the 70s (maybe even 60s), but economic growth, social progress, and foreign issues are probably better than most. Crime seems to be on an uptick in recent years but still better than 70s-80s. That's not taking media/arts or technologies into account.
