No. Dracula (the book) explicitly mentions Dracula (the character) outside during the day. So does Carmilla. It was never really a major thing before Nosferatu introduced the idea. At most, in some interpretations sunlight would weaken their unholy powers a bit, but they'd still be more or less fine. And in others they were almost entirely unaffected by sunlight other than just being tired because they were awake all night.

So basically your argument is because a fictional book chose to ignore lore that the film later actually used, the lore is somehow invalidated? You can't turn around and claim that Dracula is the inspiration for all vampires when the book was inspired by folklore.

ParanoidObsessive posted...
Keep in mind, it would have been almost entirely impossible for anyone to pass as a normal human if they couldn't interact during the day for most of human history. Prior to the advent of electricity/electric lighting, almost every service and social activity only took place during the day. Someone who only went out at night would be an almost immediate suspect for pretty much everything (which would suck for anyone who had a legitimate sunlight sensitivity).

He says overlooking that a lot of traditional vampire lore *doesn't* have them passing as normal people which, humorously enough, was more a thing introduced in Dracula than folklore. In fact, a vampire's reputation as the undead often came from individuals supposedly encountering people they knew to be deceased.

ParanoidObsessive posted...
That wasn't why. The point was to keep the vampire counting so you could run the fuck away. The idea was, by the time the vampire finished counting, you'd be gone and it wouldn't be able to follow you. It goes hand-in-hand with the running water thing - it wasn't a method for killing the vampire, it was a method for running away from the vampire (ie, find a river, creek, stream, etc and cross it as quickly as possible).

Except for the lore that explicitly references them doing it for that effect. Again, we're talking things that predate Dracula which -- also again -- was an explicit work of fiction rather than a folk tale or legend.

Yes - silver was a weapon you could use against vampires. And demons. NOT werewolves.

Silver was mostly a weapon that could be used against unholy/demonic things - and werewolves were never actually considered to be supernatural in that sense. Like I mentioned, they were usually considered to be humans using black magic, or under the influence of magic, and silver was rarely used as an anti-magic substance (if anything, silver was often pro-magic for a lot of ritualists). They have more in common with witches than they do vampires - and silver doesn't hurt witches, either.

Are you talking out of your ass at this point? Because earlier you were claiming, "Well, werewolves were just witches!", and now you're claiming that witches can't be hurt by silver *despite* one of the earliest examples of a silver bullet being used against the supernatural was to kill a witch.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Two_Brothers

If a werewolf is a witch -- per your claim -- and a witch is killed by silver bullets, it stands to reason that a werewolf would be killed by silver bullets.

On that note. How come witchers don't have two silver blades since silver blades would kill humans too?

I feel like they did actually explain this, but I forget exactly what the excuse was. It might have been that the silver blade isn't strong/sharp enough to use against anything that isn't supernatural, so you always want to use your steel blade unless you're fighting something that's mostly immune to it.

No, my argument is that books like Dracula, Carmilla, and Varney the Vampire were all generally based on the original folklore to at least some degree, and accurately reflect assumptions common to folklore for the most part. All of them added their own elements (like pointed teeth coming from Varney), but none of them were making every element of vampire lore up out of whole cloth. Especially in cases where you're talking about things that were present in folklore before those stories.

They're arguably also the three stories that have mainly shaped most of the modern image of what vampires are/are supposed to be.

Zeus posted...

And some lore does. The point is that wouldn't even really be a possibility if you're talking about vampires who immediately burst into flame in sunlight, not that every single vampire myth involves vampires passing for human.

But you're also ignoring the other half of that argument, which is that there really isn't much (if any) folklore talking about vampires being insta-killed by sunlight prior to the 20th century. Whereas post-Nosferatu it becomes the almost ur-principle of how a vampire is defined (except when someone defies it by saying they sparkle in sunlight instead).

Zeus posted...
Except for the lore that explicitly references them doing it for that effect.

Offhand, I've never heard a single story along those lines that wasn't a more modern interpretation.

Though admittedly, the problem is that it's hard to pin down older versions of folklorish tales because it's mostly oral tradition that changes over time.

Nope.

It was never a thing in actual mythology. It wasn't even a thing in fiction until about 100 years ago, give or take. It's a very new addition to the concept.

I read a ton when younger and could have maybe actually argued this, but at this point I just don't remember much anymore. I vaguely remember/thought that the brothers grim collected German (It think..bulgarian..shrug don't remember) tales about silver being used as a weapon. Thought it was about werewolves, or Lycon (Based on ancient greek mythology I thought), but I could be wrong. I am....pretty freaking sure that the Fey being weak to Iron went way back as well, and thought that silver was another weakness to some types (not goblins...but I thought it was something like that).

Sadly I used to love mythology, but yeah, I can't remember squat anymore. I can say that in modern literature (as you said in the last 100 years, and basically stuff written within my llfetime of reading (last 40 years) it was very prevalent). I can almost swear I remember mythology from ancient times that revolved around certain beings/people who could only be hurt by silver or other specific metals/substances.

Not gonna go searching it up on the internet (which I guess you can at this point), and i'm guessing you do have a current working knowlege on the subject, but damn if it doesn't feel like it was a thing way longer then 100 years ago, at least 300 or so.

I just couldn't sleep without looking it up.

This is obviously just 1 quote and not extensive research, but it general shows that my memory of silver being considered "magical" and fighting against evil does go way back. As far as werewolves, they are a lunar based creature, which did go way back (Believe the lycos thing was greek?)......but I don't know any specific intersections between them in the past (maybe Grim bro's had a story or two..shrug).

Anyway here is the quote, and then the link to where it is from. I could probably find more, but I'm tired, I just couldn't go to bed without looking it up at least a bit.

"Silver is also replete in ancient literature, with attributed magical properties that to this day is still believed by many cultures and individuals. Silver is commonly attributed to lunar deities, hence its alchemical moniker LVNA. Likewise, it is also attributed to the sacred feminine, as many lunar deities were goddesses. Silver has long been believed to be a metal that conferred protection against evil and bad luck. The now notorious belief in the powers of a silver bullet clich in werewolf and vampire movies beyond count took root in the folkloric idea that silver had been vested the ability to ward off evil spirits due to its associations with the moon. While the idea that silver wards off vampires is thought to be Christian, the use of silver as a means to deter or ward off evil exists in Islamic, Hindu, Egyptian, and Eastern European cultures as well. In Greek mythology alone, silver is mentioned just about as often as gold, the most notable being the silver-tipped bows and lances of the Goddess Artemis. The belief in the holy powers of silver didnt escape the notice of people, as even Cardinal Richelieu himself was said to have had commissioned weapons made of silver. In Eastern European folklore, silver coins are supposed to be buried on the pillars or foundations that support a house that is being built to ensure that the inhabitants of the household shall never be in want. Silver was also reputed to be able to detect poisons, as it was supposed to change color on contact with a poisonous item. This belief became so widespread that entire sets of silver dining ware became commonplace at one time or the other, lending the same silverware to any such items (whether genuine or otherwise) to this day."

I'd believe that tbh, but I'm also from Connecticut. The state that gave you all the wonders of Lyme Disease...well it turns out, about a mile and a half out into Long Island sound off the coast of Lyme, CT across a relatively shallow part of the Sound just over the New York side of the sound is an island that houses a military biological "research" facility, and plenty of fishermen have seen deer fording that stretch to and from the island.

People still manage to escape from prisons. I'm quite open to the possibilities of microscopic organisms escaping facilities that are designed for people to work in.

So at this point I'm just going to say I have a gambling addiction. After picking up two packs of the Fantastic Four Mystery Minis from Gamestop (for $3 apiece), I wound up buying three more. My first two packs contained Thing (which I kinda liked despite not wanting since I have a lot of Thing-related merch) and one of Mole Man's minions (Moloids?). The next three had Mole Man (had been tempted to get the Pop! which might have been $5 there so it kinda works out... although the Pop! looks nicer), Mr Fantastic (which I hadn't wanted, but he looks alright), and Silver Surfer (who I really hadn't cared about but... not terribly upset to get).

My big wants were Doom and Namor (with Galactus being mildly up there -- although he's got a new Pop! now which I could do instead)

Also after mild deliberation, I picked up a Pop! Owlman for $3 at a Hot Topic over the weekend.

In other news, I wound up watching/spoiling a lot of clips from the new Harley Quinn cartoon since they were up on YT (I guess they're locked behind DC All Access, a new streaming service, normally)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harley_Quinn_(TV_series)

It's kinda shit because it mixes kiddy and adult humor (I guess the demographic is anybody hard enough into DC to pay for All Access), although I liked the running continuity and how some of the relationships were handled. It also features a *lot* of humor that's going to be completely dated in as early as 5 years, including a stupid Roger Goodell joke that doesn't even work today.

I also saw a tiny bit of the Deathstroke series (which might just be on CW?), which seems more promising.

Sounds like kind of a post hoc argument. Is somebody addicted only at the point when it becomes a major disruption to their lives to the exclusion of the escalation that's led to that moment? And is it purely a means-based argument? If somebody's means exceed an unreasonable action, does that they aren't addicted? Otherwise, given that I have as much as I do -- and often as poorly organized as it is -- I really shouldn't be picking up more at all. That's not purely a gambling aspect, though.

I enjoyed The Final Fantasy VII Remake demo a lot. The music and the gameplay are top notch, and the gameplay is stellar. I need more time with the demo because there are still some uses of the battle system and the shortcuts during battle. Because at the Scorpion Sentenal boss at the end is actually tough.

I'm glad that the game is not going yo be easy. It's not going to be impossible, but there will be a challenge.

The remixed music is surprisingly wonderful as I've had the Reactor Core theme stuck in my head for two days now. I was humming it to myself, and Scarlett was like, "Just plaubyje damn demo again."

Anyway, I'm really impressed. Did anyone else play it?

Here's a dilemma. My mother died, which is terrible, super terrible, but there is an opportunity for me to finally move back into my house. My sister, her husband and kids, and Bank Robber are living there with the primary goal of taking care of my mother. That is no longer in play because of her death.

Scarlett and I were looking for a home, but finances with me not working are tight, and we can't qualify. So, we can stay in our current town house or move across town to my paid for house, but kick out my sister and her kids. Now the kids are basically grown 17 and 14. The oldeatvia graduating in May and going to college and living in the dorms.

Do I make my sister and family move out so I can have a better life with my wife, or do I stay where I am and barely keep my head above water, but be a jerk face to my sister and extended family?

What would you do?

Living with them is not an option. Mainly because my my sister and her husband are very religious, and my wife and I are not. On top of that they are very lazy, and do not pay their share of the bills already. Bank Robberhas taken up a lot of the slack for their laziness. aPlus, they are thieves and liars. For example, they took out a loan in my mother's name without her permission, and put my number down for the collection when they didn't pay the loan back.

Finally, they owe me several thousand dollars already. Which they have no plans of ever paying me nack.

So, sadly living with them is not an option.

I keep hearing both ways, that it's either via proximity/breath or that it can be contracted via touch. All it'd take is ordering something online and then handling that thing when it arrives without protective gloves on.

The lack of accurate information on the disease is troubling. I sense the authorities in charge of public health do not yet understand how it works.

Related to a point of discussion above: I was not going to play the FFVII remake demo, but I changed my mind after hearing how short it was, so I figured there was no harm in it. Jessie is adorbs.

I'm more concerned with potentially infecting others if I caught it myself than I am concerned with it doing me much harm. That said, it's somewhat hit Connecticut at this point so... guess it's just a matter of time til it spreads. Feels like a bigger deal than the last few scares, but who knows.

Also thus far left unanswered:

Wait, why do you own that house?

Yeah, also not sure why this isn't an option.

I haven't paid too much attention to the Coronoavirus, and no one gives enough shits about NM to visit out here. That said, finding hand sanitizer for my show is basically impossible, the city seems to be sold out right now.

No they don't, if you read the documentation it's been pretty clear that it's new, that's why it's called the Novel Coronavirus, it's never been seen before.

My immune system is bulletproof. Even if I contract it I have little fear it would progress to anything all that problematic.

My only real worry is that I basically have to shop for my mother and take her to doctor's appointments and would generally be an infection risk for her if I caught it, and she's in her 70s and not in the best health, so it would likely be much worse for her.

I'll be laying particularly low for the next week or two anyway, though... because I just had minor surgery I'm recouping from (part of why I haven't been around for a bit - I was trying to get stuff done before I went in). I barely feel like doing anything other than sitting around watching YouTube and sleeping right now.

If I was still able to remotely work 100%, I'd probably retreat to a friend's cabin for a few weeks and let this nonsense blow over. However, I'm stuck going into an office like a muggle at least half the week.
