Thanks for keeping the topics and conversation going in a Geeky fashion. Thanks to the regulars and all the lurkers for slowly creeping the message count to 500, we love you, so stunning, so brave.

You know the rules: Post anything Geek or Nerd related. Whether it's about video games, movies, music, comics, television, board games wrestling, etc.

As per usual we have an opening question to keep the conversation going.

If you were stuck in a tropical paradise with food, water, shelter, the Internet, and your health in tact, but for that reward you only get to play 5 video games for the rest of your life, what 5 games, would you bring with you, and why?

Bonus Question: What 5 games would you not bring because they would make the paradise a nightmare?

Wrap up from "Valley of the Geeks" in the upcoming post.

Huh?

Plus how'd you be stuck in that scenario anyway? And would there be very fine women?

The Sims 2 and its entire library of expansions - to compensate for not being able to have a life with other people. Ill live through my Sims.

SecondLife - to spend time with family and friends that I may never get to see again.

Cyberpunk 2077 - a captivating story to escape the monotony of island life. Also early access?

Minecraft - build a world worthy of being alone

Heavily-modded Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim - cause

Any game that has a short story or is very simple. Im alone on an island. I need games to get away from this life that are longer than 40 hours.

If it's a tropical paradise, I'd probably be less inclined to play games at all as opposed to just enjoying the experience. Especially if it seems like food, water, shelter, and health isn't going to be a dangerous factor. Even more so if there friendly local natives.

But if I had to bring anything, I'd probably just bring Minecraft. That's all the game you really need.

Though the usual cheat answer is I'd bring some popular multiplayer-only game so I could go online and tell people I was marooned and have them send people to find me. Assuming I actually wanted to leave, rather than just stay in, you know, paradise.

There really aren't a ton of games that would ruin the experience simply by being there, because it isn't that hard to just not play them. I mean, I could always use Final Fantasy VIII as a drink coaster.

But if it's just a question of "Ehh, which games would you never, ever play", it'd probably be a list way, way longer than just 5 games.

PS3 had a better library. Eventually.

I'd strongly disagree with this. At least from my perspective.

When I was comparing the PS3 and 360 to decide which one to get, it basically came down to a choice between whether or not I wanted to play Uncharted or Halo. At the time Halo was the easy answer, and afterwards there were plenty of games on the 360 that made the purchase worthwhile. But PS3 never really evolved beyond "The console that has Uncharted."

Sure, the PS3 had God of War and Last of Us, but I didn't (and still don't) give a damn about either. And I have trouble thinking of a single other game the console had as an exclusive that mattered at all.

Conversely, the 360 had the Halo games (5 games, because you've got Halo 3, Halo 4, and Reach as well as ODST and Halo Wars) and the original Mass Effect (PS3 eventually got this, but not until the entire generation was almost effectively over and it was mostly pointless). It also had Fable III (which I really enjoyed no matter how much people shit on it) and Witcher 2. In the arcade it also had UNO (which has always been a guilty pleasure for me), the Tron game from forever ago, and Marathon. They also had the Keflings games that my GF absolutely loved for a while, and games like Catan and Carcassonne.

Nearly every other game on either system is available for both, so don't really matter when comparing the two directly. And ultimately, the 360 has always had more and better games that I actually wanted to play, so I've never regretted not owning a PS3.

Especially since the only games on it that I actually wanted to play - Uncharted 1-3 - are now on the PS4 anyway (and I own them).

Meanwhile, the Xbox One is the console this gen that has zero exclusives I care about at all. Even Halo has turned to crap and means nothing to me now.

I keep hearing too many comparisons to Dark Souls, which is making me wary as hell.

Along with the fact that it's, you know, an EA game. I'm still waiting to see how they do a post-launch update that introduces broken multiplayer and microtransactions, or whatever else they do to fuck it up.

Ok. First option has to be something with infinite replay value, like a version of chess or a Tetris type game. Shogi, mancala, backgammon, Go, Othello, solitaire...something along those lines.

Next has to be a painfully long rpg or other type game to Max out. FFV, Disgaea, SMT:N, Vagrant Story, GTA:SA... something along those lines.

Third up, literally any multiplayer type game. Something with a way to communicate with the outside world for a chance of rescue. I'm not expecting much from randos, but I'm hoping that my friendlist has a more vested interest in my rescue.

4th, Rough call between a tried and true metrovania like super Metroid or SOTN for shiggles.

5th let's go with irony. A survival game or a farming sim. Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, something in that vein just to play what I'm already living, lol.

But in all seriousness if I'm stranded on a deserted island most of my energy is going to be spent conserving calories, maintaining hydration/shelter/fire and hunting and gathering. The extent of my gaming would probably boil down to a good old round of "choke the chicken" if time allows.

From a purely pragmatic standpoint I might have to consider making all 5 choices NES titles just to fashion spear points from the cases and circuit boards, or possibly throwing one silver disc-based game into that mix just to have a signal mirror.

If I'm straight up Link's Awakening'd on a deserted island, the Wind Fish is the least of my concerns.

The scenario largely falls under the same dilemma as the infamous "Time Enough At Last" Twilight Zone episode.

Fun fact: lots of people who've been in exhaustion-inducing survival situations have mentioned that you have almost zero energy or interest in sex/self-service. Even on shows like Survivor where the cast is only just sort of half-surviving on their own, and where they're usually surrounded by attractive scantily-clad people of both sexes, they've mentioned there's almost no interest in it.

Unless the island you wind up on has tribal natives who take up worshipping you as a god and thus bring you all the food and fresh water you want and maintain your shelter for you, the effort you expend staying alive will probably discourage you from any extracurricular activities along those lines.

Only five games. I dare say that is too difficult a question for me to answer. How to narrow it down? Hmm. At the very least, I need to make certain to choose a system that is not disc-based to reduce the chances of it failing as time progresses. Meaning Nintendo. Meaning at least two of those titles are going to be a Metroid and a Pokmon.

Have been enjoying The Mandalorian thus far. It definitely feels like a Western in space, but not in the same way as Firefly.

My wife got another promotion at work, and with that it brings a new work schedule for her. Sure, she gets more power and more money, but it's not always about power and money is it?

Anyway, she's working later hours with different days off starting next week, and that just leaves me more time to play video games. Black Friday is coming up, and there are some good sales on games I would not normally buy at full price. Those games are going to get me through the first of the year until Final Fantasy in March.

Supergirl was ok at first, and I stuck with it longer than I should just because Melissa Benoist is adorkable, and Martian Manhunter was one of my favorite DC characters.

But once it joined the CW Arrowverse and had to interrupt every episode midway for 15 minutes of hamfisted, preachy lesbian drama I had to drop the show because it became unbearable.

Otherwise, despite the lack of clarification from Wave, I kinda imagine I'd basically just consider amount of content, replayability, and multiplayer. If you only have five games, instead of getting a thousand hours out of something, you'd really need to get a hundred thousand hours.

While I'm not a Minecraft fan, it was one of the first things to jump to mind because it has absurd levels of content.

I'd say second would be a MMO but... what happens when it runs out of content or the servers close? Instead, an open-world WRPG like Skyrim is appealing since you have character creation, mods, and a pretty open-ended game. By contrast, no matter how long a linear RPG is, eventually it'll get stale.

Third would be a fighting game. Something by Capcom with a large roster that'll likely have an active community. So probably more main-series SF than one of the vs spinoffs, but who knows.

Fourth would probably be a hacked version of Pokemon where I can choose my starter and customize minor story things. Particularly a version with multiple save files.

And fifth... idk, tbd.

I should have clarified that you cannot ever leave the island, but I mean why would you? The outside world is a giant poop show for the most part, and as I ge th older my youthful optimism isn't so optimistic anymore. Therefore, going forward just assume you can't leave the Island.

As for Supergirl and Batwoman too, two shows I watch with my wife every week, I don't mind the same sex agenda and liberal slants. Considering that I'm in an interacial marriage in the deep south, my in laws won't talk to me because ue I am black, and some of my closest friends are gay, it never bothers me that the story lines are so diversity.

In fact, my wife and I went to lunch Saturday afternoon, and I hot out of the car, and waited while my wife hor my wheelchair. I van walk, bit sometimes it's easier to use the chair if we are waiting for long periods of time, and as I waited this old white lady stared at a with utter disgust. I yelled, "Did you want to help he handicapped black man and his black wife, because you see something you like or dislike?" She scoffed and walked inside the restaurant.

So yeah, I have no problem. With the content of the CW shows. They aren't the best quality, but network television is not that good anymore anyway, but it's good background noise as I play with my Switch.

It does that for straight relationships too. After all it is a CW show, and those are some of the tropes, but it rings false just to point out the same sex relationships.

I guess it's like when you buy a new nee car, all of a sudden you begin to notice that other people have the same color and make of car a lot more often. So, if you're looking for same sex relationship drama you're going to find it.

Nevertheless, I recognize the criticism, but it happens in comics too. The relationship drama is peppered before, during, and after the villain attacks.

Here's a question I can't answer - is it only the show in its current CW form that is bad, or was it bad from the very beginning even when it was on CBS?

Or to ask the same question a different way, is it the CW itself that made it bad, or it is inherently bad and just happens to be on the CW?

But if you read what I actually wrote, it's an objectively factual statement, and you're objectively wrong if you disagree with it.

Because I said "at least from my perspective". Because no matter how much you may disagree with my perspective, my perspective really isn't going to change.

Just based solely on games that interest me, or that would ever motivate me to buy a console, the PS3 was just inherently weaker than the 360 was. The 360 may actually have my personal strongest library in the entire history of gaming (and remember, I span 6-out-of-8 generations worth of personal experience).

People who like different genres of gaming than what I like, or who like genres I dislike and dislike genres I like are obviously going to have different opinions, but that doesn't really change my perspective.

And I'm sure there are even people who think the Wii-U had the best showing last gen. Those people are sick and deserve our pity, but they're entitled to their opinions as well. God help them.

I played it, and just playing through it (and through other people's builds) never really interested me all that much (remember, it doesn't help that I dislike platformers in general).

I suppose I would have gotten more into it if I was interested in the nuts and bolts of the mechanics and builds, but for all the time I sink into Minecraft in my OCD, I've never really gotten into doing redstone machines either. It doesn't really scratch the parts of my brain that really fall in love with games.

That's sort of my issue with it (and a large part of why I didn't watch Agent Carter). It's less that I have a problem with implications of diversity or the need to have strong female or ethnic protagonists, or even reminders that the past really wasn't a nice place to be for a lot of people who didn't look like me, but when it feels like the show is coming to a hard stop every 10 minutes or so to toss in an awkward hamfisted DO YOU GET IT? BIGOTRY AND PREJUDICE ARE THINGS THAT EXIST!, it starts to get annoying after the dozenth time someone has come out with an eye-rollingly stupid statement or moment solely to make the point they've already repeatedly made.

Yes, I get it, men were really sexist in the 40s, hooray for feminism.

Yes, okay, still get it. Life was totally hard on those 1940s women living in a society that dismissed their accomplishments and demeaned them as second-class citizens. No, this is not a thing I've stopped being aware of at any point, and I ever get the unsubtle barely-subtext you're trying to establish comparing it to how things are now, and how women are still discriminated against. Good job on the social commentary, now can we get back to the comic book action show?

Oh, for God's sake. ALL RIGHT, I GET IT. I'M AN EVIL WHITE MALE. GET THE FUCK OVER YOURSELF.

To be fair, context is everything with this. I'm not going to get too over-excited about lesbian relationships if I'm watching The L Word, or if I'm watching War and Remembrance (wait, do you Millennials even know what that is?) I'm not going to complain about how they seem to keep demonizing Nazis and emphasizing the whole anti-semitism thing. But I'm also not going to comic book movies and TV show for cutting social commentary.

It's also the difference why I can enjoy a well-written character like Kamala Khan (an ethnic female whose stories often explore the effect of being a devout Muslim girl in modern America), whereas I can still be annoyed by the majority of Young Avengers characters, who seem to exist solely to scream LOOK HOW PROGRESSIVE WE ARE! DO YOU LOVE US NOW, INTERNET? WHY WON'T YOU BUY OUR COMICS?!

Young Avengers basically just feels like Tumblr fucked a box of crayons.

Mostly, what it really comes down to is whether or not your social subtext is well-written, and integrated well into a story that is also well-written. Hit those requirements and I rarely care what sort of social message you're selling. Get too stupidly preachy or ham-fisted about it, and I'll be annoyed even if you're preaching something I actually believe in.

What got me hooked on that series was how much fun traversal was

As much as people talk up the idea of traversal as a selling point (usually for games like Arkham City), it never really grabbed me all that much. At least not in a major way as a stand-alone positive - I can look back and say I really enjoyed leaping and gliding around the city in Saints Row IV, or that the rail-grinding in Jet Set Radio Future was fun at the time, but if you asked me whether I liked those games I'm not sure how much that would factor into my answer (which would probably be "I absolutely loved Saints Row IV, but for a lot of reasons other than how you move, and I'm kind of meh on Jet Set Radio Future because rail-grinding is about the only thing the game really has". The latter also being a large part of the reason why Sunset Overdrive never even remotely interested me this gen.)

I haven't played Spider-Man on the PS4 yet (though I do own it - it's in my ever-growing pile of games I own but never have the time/desire to play, which I ignore while I go back to spending another 40+ hours in Minecraft), so it's possible that I might love the web-swinging so much that it completely redefines my entire perspective on games and how important traversal can be as a mechanic, but I suspect I'm going to go lukewarm on it very quickly, and it will be up to the overarching narrative, dialogue, and mission structure to either win me over or lose me.

The same kind of holds true for most of the stereotypical "parkour" games for me. The first time I ever played one it was amazing for all of like 15 minutes, and then it mostly just became a ho-hum way to get from Point A to Point B where the game was actually happening.

I should have clarified that you cannot ever leave the island, but I mean why would you? The outside world is a giant poop show for the most part, and as I ge th older my youthful optimism isn't so optimistic anymore. Therefore, going forward just assume you can't leave the Island.

Because you didn't clarify whether there'd be fly honeys on the island? Plus islands can get boring.

I don't mind the same sex agenda and liberal slants.

While I understand those to be larger issues with the show itself, they weren't present in the clip. The clip was just incredibly poorly written with some cringy acting to go along with it.

So yeah, I have no problem. With the content of the CW shows. They aren't the best quality, but network television is not that good anymore anyway, but it's good background noise as I play with my Switch.

I'm beginning to think that Supernatural might be the very last CW show I ever watch (and I'm not current with it because CW isn't putting it on Hulu, so I have to wait for it to go on NFI).

ParanoidObsessive posted...
Here's a question I can't answer - is it only the show in its current CW form that is bad, or was it bad from the very beginning even when it was on CBS?

iirc, that clip is listed as being from season 1, so it would have been bad all along. I had forgotten it was on CBS first.

But if you read what I actually wrote, it's an objectively factual statement, and you're objectively wrong if you disagree with it.

Because I said "at least from my perspective". Because no matter how much you may disagree with my perspective, my perspective really isn't going to change.

idk, you aren't sounding rational. Are you sure that your perspective is alright? =p

Not found sure I've found that one yet, but now that you've mentioned it I'll probably see it within the next week or two >_>

Wait, you mean we weren't supposed to look up to Don Draper and view him as an ideal version of masculinity to aspire to? Man, all of the guys at my local MRA meetings are going to be floored by this!

Next you'll be telling me that Walter White was never meant to be a role model!

Anyone watching or watched "The Disastrous Life of Saiki K."? It's on Netflix and it's pretty funny.

It all comes down to the quality of the writing, IMO. Inclusion can be seamless, rather than ham-fisted, but being in-your-face and confrontational seems to be a hallmark of the Social Justice movement.

Yes, and so have a lot of people in the anime topic. The series is kinda short, though. Plus there are a lot of untranslated kanji jokes and some of the dialogue can be rapidfire (especially when the characters are talking over each other). iirc, the later seasons on NFI are only available subbed (or, at least, they were when I watched it.)

Zues really needs to stop referring to Netflix as NFI.

https://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/NFI

Notice that there is no reference to Netflix. It is a file type used by the Netflix streaming app but it's not the only file type used.
