The NFL and NFL Players Association are on track to finalize a new collective bargaining agreement that includes a 17-game regular season by early 2020, reports Mark Maske of The Washington Post.

The two sides have made meaningful progress toward a new labor agreement, which would prevent a work stoppage in 2021, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. The current CBA runs through the 2020 season.

The NFLPA has publicly resisted a longer schedule, citing safety concerns for players. But owners are reportedly prepared to make their fair share of concessions.

A 17-game regular season might include one neutral-site game for every team each year, potentially fueling the league's international series. The lengthier slate would also reportedly result in a shorter preseason and could pave the way for an expansion of the playoff field from 12 teams to 14 teams.

But this is every football game ever played

An average professional football game lasts 3 hours and 12 minutes, but if you tally up the time when the ball is actually in play, the action amounts to a mere 11 minutes. Part of the discrepancy has to do with the basic rules of American football.

It's a boring as sin sport. They do nothing but stand around. I guess it's to be expected with how fat some of them are

Yeah, soccer is the greatest sport of all. They are actually playing for a full 90 minutes with no commercials!

Nevermind that most of the time in a soccer game is spent meaninglessly running around far away from the goals. And nevermind the large amount of strategy involved in every NFL game, which is why people like it so much in the first place.

In football, almost every single play is at least attempting to get a first down, and can conceivably be a large gain or even a touchdown. And on the other hand, stopping a team that's really close to getting a first can be exciting too because almost every play is a potential first town and the defenses are on the brink.

They are different games...the "standing around" is 40 seconds of chess with the coaches trying to outsmart the other team and once the ball is put into play it's some of the best athletes in the world trying to do that job. If you think it's just standing around and boring then that's on you but don't be so obtuse to think it's not an extremely taxing game.
