Im rewatching Moonraker and its funny how Drax says, Forgive me, Im not very accustomed to English sense of humor, in the cleanest British accent ever. Is he supposed to be Californian or something? I hadnt noticed that before.

In fact, only a handful of Bond villains arent white European men.

Live and Let Die, Diamonds Are Forever and SPECTRE are the bottom three of the ones I've seen, but I have not seen a couple of them, like Die Another Day and I remember very little of Moonraker.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a top 5 Bond movie for me. Replace Lazenby with Connery or Moore and it would be number 1 on most people's lists.

I'm in the love camp with OHMSS. It was only OK for me at first, but after multiple watches it's one of my favorites. I don't think Lazenby was that bad especially for his first big film. It's hard to imagine Connery or Moore doing the final scene better.

I doubt OHMSS would never be a mainstream number 1 favorite because of the whiplash ending where Bond's wife dies and then the movie just ends.

I like the heartfelt ending. Its a nice contrast to most other Bond films, and I agree Lazenby is particularly great in that scene. In the rest of the movie, not so much.

I think it was an almost perfect ending; the reprise of the Bond theme's instead of Louis Armstrong's We Have All the Time in the World certainly was a terrible and shameful mistake.

That's true. Almost perfect indeed.

It's a shame OHMSS had such a bad reaction. The next movie being the big blow off and Bond getting his revenge on Blofeld would have been great, but they just ignored OHMSS and we got the mess of Diamonds Are Forever. I still like DAF Ina campy so bad it's good way, but a proper sequel would have been better.

It's a shame about DAF, too, that it nearly disregards OHMSS, and what little there is is handled with a most perfunctionary way. Bond doesn't act much pleased in disposing of Blofeld, merely seeming to make a quip like it was a funny but minor mishap at the supermarket checkout. I have to add that Diana Riggi was a great Bond girl, who could hold her own in a tight spot. The Bond girl in DAF was set up as that, but after her capture she inexplicably becomes a useless dimwit with none of the sass and confidence she used to have. Her utter neutering is frankly dismaying.

On a brighter note, the moon buggy chase deserves a special note for being plain bonkersand more entertaining than the Vegas chase. Bond only escapes because the villain's mooks are more inept than the moon buggy iswhich in fact was so flimsy it lost a wheel (off-screen) during one of the scenes. Just watch the sequence again and keep an eye out for a misplaced wheel rolling by! The event preceding the chase is also hilarious. Bond sneaks on to, of all things, a staged moon landing set, with astronauts in space suits. One of them tries to stop him, but fails specacularly as he moves in slow motion as if he truly were in a low-g environment. It's comically absurd!

Throughout the movie Connery does act just well enough to be convincing (for the most part), though Wint and Kidd do a stellar job at stealing the spotlight. Blofeld is... ehh, well... is played by a minor character from You only Live Twice, and worse yet, has none of that memorable creepiness and cold menace of that movie's Blofeld. The ending is also, despite all the action, an anti-climax. Anyhow, this is becoming an overlong and rambling post, so I'll end it by saying that DAF is not great, but it's campy fun, and certainly not the worst Bond.

I've heard that the worst Bond is one of the Daniel Craig ones.

Die Another Day was good. That's the one with the ball torture chair right? That scene is crazy, and then that whole ice castle thing that he drives through is badass. That movie is crazy. I don't know why everyone has to shit on it. The reaction to that is what led to the awful Craig era of super serious and unfun films. The only one I've even bothered to watch was Casino Royale because that sucked ass and I heard they only got worse from there.

All very true. I'll always have a soft spot for DAF and I love Wint and Kidd. Those puns. The elevator fight between Bond and Franks was pretty good too.

DAF should have been a mix of the novels You Only Live Twice (which came after OHMSS) and Diamonds are Forever.

Bond is depressed after Tracy's death and his work is slacking. M is on the verge of firing him, but is convinced by Moneypenny to give him once last chance. M sends Bond on a mission to stop the diamond smuggling pipeline, something relatively easy that might get Bond back in gear.

007 meets Tiffany Case, who has also gone through a traumatic experience and eventually they get to Vegas. Bond eventually learns that it's recluse multi -millionaire Willard White who is behind the smuggling pipeline and Bond scales White's hotel and infiltrates his penthouse only to discover Blofeld who has kidnapped White and taken over his operation. Eventually Bond kills Blofeld and Bond and Tiffany learn to love again.

Or something like that. I'm no writer. While I still like the DAF that we got, a more serious and thought out movie would have been better.

While CR is pretty close to the book (relatively speaking), I never thought of the Bond character as like the one from the novels like they claimed. Dalton is the closest in that regard. Craig was British Jason Bourne for the most part. There's some sprinkles of Bond throughout the Craig films, but not enough.

I'm a big Bond fan and only a handful I just don't like very much. I voted for Quantum of Solace but Diamonds Are Forever and The Man with the Golden Gun are contenders.

By no means is Never Say Never Again great, but I'd probably put it above those three. Which is weird for an "unofficial" film, but I dunno, maybe the charm of having Connery back one last time a dozen years later makes me elevate it a bit. Thunderball is overall better but I liked how NSNA tweaked some things.

After rewatching some of these, Im torn between DAF, Golden Gun, and Spectre. What Spectre did to Blofeld was absolutely unforgivable and I dont know if its even possible to redeem him in the next movie.

DAF is mindless camp, but also does Blofeld injustice by him not even knowing it was Bond who foiled his escape. GG has Christopher Lee, and thats literally the only reason its not dead last. But even then, it might be.

Bond itself is a throwback to male fantasies, all the way back to Fleming's first novels in the mid 50s. They're essentially romance novels for guys.

QoS was a nothing-film. Nothing offensively bad, but nothing good: a silly villain plot, a completely bland and unthreatening villain, even the ending set piece in an inexplicably violently exploding hotel just kind of ends without much of a conclusion.

Meanwhile Spectre actively tries to drag down other movies with it it's that awful

The final confrontation at the desert hotel in Quantum is one of its few redeeming moments for me. The showdown with Greene was particularly great; him wielding that axe around like a cornered rat and Bond being caught off guard by that. It was unique if nothing else.

I just wish Bond killed Greene in that scene instead of leaving him to die in the desert.

The problem was that On Her Majesty's Secret Service did well in the UK, but not in the US. Diamonds Are Forever had to be made for people who had skipped the last film as well as though who hadn't. That's a pretty tall order when OHMSS is best known for the film in which Bond is married and then left a widower.

Diamonds Are Forever should have stuck with their original idea: kill Blofeld in the opening scene and move on to a new villain. That would have resolved everything. People who had caught the last movie would understand why Bond was so upset. People who had missed it would just think Bond was on a tear in his quest to finally settle things with the leader of SPECTRE.
