I'm here wondering to myself why they're thanking me. They're the ones who are helping me procure stuff with money; I should be thanking them. If it's part of their job description, though, then I would not be confused at all. Anyway, I do not know what to do when people do stuff for me, and thank me for whatever reason. This convenient store scenario was just one example of this happening. I don't know if I should thank people after they thank me. I'm grateful, but I am too confused as to what social etiquette is and whether or not I should thank them anyway. I'm very confused when people do this. Do people just thank each other simultaneously? What madness is this?

I must have these answers.

it basically means "thank you for giving us your business"

as you thank them for packing your stuff, being open, being friendly, having what you want(if these apply), they thank you for keeping them in business by shopping there

as a person who works in retail the reason why we say thank you is because you came to us for your groceries and ect. and thats how we get paid for doing our job is that when customers come to our store to buy things and the sales we make go towards to paying the employees
