Memphis Tigers center James Wiseman, considered the potential No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. A judicial court judge in Shelby County, Tennessee, has put a hold on the ruling, allowing Wiseman to play in Memphis Friday night game against Illinois-Chicago. Wiseman was ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the country coming into the season.

The NCAAs allegations stem from Wisemans time in high school. Wiseman started his high school career in Nashville before transferring to Memphis East high school where Penny Hardaway was coaching. Hardaway was hired by the Tigers ahead of the 2018-19 season, and Wiseman committed to Hardaway over Kentucky and others eight months later.

Now, the NCAA is alleging that Hardaway gave $11,500 to the Wiseman family to help them move to Memphis when Wiseman was in high school. The NCAA has reportedly deemed Hardaway a booster.

Wiseman was brilliant in Memphis season opener against South Carolina State, finishing with 28 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Wiseman is projected by ESPN to be the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. His presence was a big reason why Memphis had the top-ranked recruiting class in the country coming into the season, and why the Tigers started the new year in the top-15 of the polls.

how can you expect poor kids and their families not to take money if it is offered? the student athletes shouldnt be punished, if you punish anyone it should be the boosters but this rule is antiquated and needs to go away.

Unfair or not, the rules are the rules. There is a reason that many top prospects have been going overseas to play professional basketball for one year before going to the NBA.

He, and more importantly Penny Hardaway, should have realized that this would happen. As infractions go this is clear and obvious

I don't think so, the NCAA's new rule is that players can make money from their names and likenesses, the NCAA will probably still be really annoying about players making money in any other way.

Oh, ok, good. But, what NCAA does by not allowing its players to make money other ways is stupid af. The only reason they're allowing them to make money off their likenesses in the first place is because of a California law, and it's dumb af that the law was even needed.

I don't disagree. However, there are plenty of other avenues for these kids to take until the rules become more lax (although this would still be a violation under them).

If he wanted to accept money he should have went overseas or took the G league route for one year.

Should Chase Young have played American football overseas if he wanted a family friend to help get his girlfriend to a bowl game? If a volleyball player wants to wash her car? If a player wants to upload YouTube videos or get his car out of impound?

I'm not talking about the petty football violations (Young should not have been suspended at all. He paid the friend back). Wiseman taking $11,500 to help buy a house is not a tiny amount of money and will always be a penalty to the NCAA. As soon as he did that, he should have realized he was boned. He's not a football or volleyball player where this is legit the only place he could showcase his talent. He could be getting paid millions overseas right now and STILL be the #1 overall pick in the next draft.
