It is possible to have a clean house and still get them. Cleaner house makes it more likely they wont stick around (little to no food for them)

Not as an adult, no

Had a mouse infestation a few years ago, some mouse traps and glue traps (yes I know they're unethical) dealt with them. But one day flies kept coming out of mouse hole somewhere and kept wanting to get out all day and night which I suspect came from the litter the mice left behind.

I seem to get them at the start of every winter once it starts to get cold.
I live right in the edge of my town, close to a farmers field. Have left out poison traps and keep them topped up for when they get in.

One is actually in the house right now, i actually was checking the traps and last night and saw it feeding on it.

I have a stray cat that basically lives on my back porch and she is a murder machine. Constantly killing mice, squirrels, snakes, and even larger bugs. Nothing makes it into the house.

I currently live is a rural area in Texas and get them. My dogs kill them. And the cat is learning, as well. Once I drop some more of the corpses outside, more cats will come to keep the outside good...

I live on a farm. We occasionally get a mouse but our cats take care of them. My mother's house has 17 rooms and very old. It has mice and rats. I lived in a house in town that had so many mice they would come out and run around in the evening while we we watching TV. I was glad to move out of there.

No, since I live in an apartment

That said, I haven't had any mice or rats in my apartment since I've been there. It's possible there have been some in there before I started living there, but it's a 5th floor apartment, so I'm rather doubtful

Yeah, that does make it harder, especially newer apartments. Some older ones get have it pretty bad though.

Not in my current house, but I have a lot of stray cats around and it is more of a heavily populated area. The house I grew up in we would pretty much get at least one or two every winter. It was near a huge field and there were no cats around so unless you patch up every possible place where they could get in your are going to get them no matter what. We found just a spring trap and some peanut butter would usually take care of them.

Had a rat a few months ago. It was HUGE. I think it was around for like a month. I bought several types of traps that had good reviews. I did a little research (about how rats behave, how they get in, where they stay, where they go, etc.) and put traps in places where I had seen it and small openings I thought it might go, but they were all like escape routes. I left the traps there for a few weeks because I read rats were very cautious of new objects (one article said to place some fake traps that don't trigger to condition the rat into thinking it wa safe and then one day swapping that trap with a real one). The traps did nothing for a long time.

IMAGERY WARNING: IT GETS A BIT GRAPHIC IF YOU HAVE A GOOD IMAGINATION.

One night the rat PISSED ME OFF. I was going to the bathroom and it just ran right at me! The next day I rearranged the traps and placed one right where it always hung out (that's where I saw it run from several times). I was super tired that day too because I had stayed up being mad the night before. I crashed shortly after setting the traps. THEN LATER THAT NIGHT, I heard a bunch of clacking. I went to check and it was the rat! The trap was clamped down on its head, but its body was free to move and it was still alive. It was struggling to get out. It moved from the corner of the kitchen to the center, like 4 or 5 feet! It paused every once in a while to rest, but it would try again and the trap would clack against the floor each time it tried to break free. I placed a big box over it (the rat and the trap) and topped the box with another box of soup. Its freedom of movement was restricted, so the clacking finally stopped. I went back to bed and it died somewhere in the middle of the night. I disposed of the body in the morning. It was so gross. AND HUGE.

The first house I lived in when I moved to Philly was right next to a heavily wooded area filled with deer.

After moving in, we noticed a few mice here and there but my dog eventually scared them off.
