Hi Ya'll.

Recently I flew to NY and I was annoyed to discover that it is about $15-20 more to get an uber/taxi from the Airport as apposed to getting one to drop you off there. I looked it up afterwards and some airports charge fees for taxis/ubers to pick up people (so they pass the fee on to you).

I didn't think much about it afterwards because I was tired and had other things going on, but I just read
about a hack you can use!!

There are shuttles at the airport that will bring you to hotels etc for free, so if you just hop on one of them (preferably in the direction you want to go), you can save yourself alot of money.

If your local, or fairly close it can drop a $40 fee down to about $10 (at least according to the article thing I was reading).

Anyway, just thought I would mention it here as I was not happy about the extra cost and I know I will try and avoid it in the future.

How is that stealing? The Uber driver is being charged a fee to pick you up directly at the airport and passing that fee directly on to you. They weren't making anything on top of that part of the transaction. By going to a hotel, any hotel first you're just bypassing the fee and hassle for all involved.

It's called "being a stow-away" and it's stealing. Those hotel shuttles are free for the hotel patrons not random people trying to avoid paying.

No. McDonald's allows people to use their restroom without purchase.

If the shuttle driver knew you weren't a guest of the hotel, they wouldn't let you ride.

But it was going to the hotel anyway. It wasn't making a special trip just for you. If you were denying a seat to someone staying at the hotel, you might have a case.

Using a service that wasn't intended for you, is stealing that service.

you don't have to be a quest of the hotel, as the shuttle driver wouldn't know, and also wouldn't care.

their job is to pick people up, and taken them to a specific place. you could be staying at the hotel already, or going here to stay. what you do when you step off that bus is no ones business but yours.

Here's the thing: the hotel made the service with the intent of it serving patrons. There is a neat get-out-of-jail-free clause though.

Ask the driver "What's the price to go to the hotel?" and if they say "There's no charge.", they have given you verbal consent to travel for free. The driver has given the service to a person he has not checked is eligible and so he is the one who must answer to the hotel for misuse.

Actually when I went to Florida with my uncle awhile ago, he contacted a hotel in advance specifically about using their shuttle, and not only was it ok, they let us leave our luggage at their hotel for the day and watched it for us while we went to the everglades etc.

It's not a bad idea to ask first, but yeah I'm pretty sure they have no problem with you using the shuttle since as mentioned above, it's gonna do the trip anyway, so unless it's full, your not really using any resources.

Actually, a lot don't care. Some even take people to other hotels for tips. That's bad on the driver. But just gettting on when there is an empty seat doesn't matter. Besides, who wants to lose an extra $15-$20 to Uber because they picked you up from the airport. You want to talk about stealing, talk to them...

Like WhiskeyDisk said, they aren't making a special trip for you...

Technically, they can call the hotel and check logs and stuff. But you are right that most don't care...
