I'm playing on hard, 'cause I normally only play games once, so I like to go all in. Seems reasonable so far, though I got my ass kicked by MULES once. Really hope there's a way to permanently get rid of them later.

It does seem like killing people would be a huge problem given the early events of the game, but they go out of their way to classify what little weaponry you get early on as "non-lethal", implying that there is a "lethal".

I mean, the blood grenades are listed as non-lethal too and I've killled a load of BTs and 2 tentacle whales with them so far.

my first timed mission of Death Stranding is when it all really clicked. Had to get my delivery there fast (under 30 minutes) and it was a living creature in a breathable container so I couldn't submerge it. I had recently gotten my bike and used it earlier to transport heavy metals to build some bridges. Then I undertook that mission and delivered it in 5 minutes with 0% damage and I truly understood the struggle of the delivery man and how they depend on so many people to get their job done

Damn dude, good job. It took me right at 10 minutes and I ran into BTs and almost lost all my cargo and my bike. My cargo took the first damage of the game and I got my first A rank. :(

My understanding is that later on things like cargo weight and walking don't even matter anymore because you're building a network of ziplines across the country

Game started off feeling really isolated, but I'm way behind most of you guys and already the landscape feels so busy with everyone's signs, markers and structures all over the map.

My moment where the game clicked for me was the wind farm mission. Everything that went wrong for me did, I kept getting attacked by BTs and lost most of my cargo and it was a struggle to grab the essentially delivery and go. And then I spawned one of the tentacle monster BTs which started eating half the forest with goop and I just had to run for my life while BB was nearing complete shutdown. Just awful. But then I turned on the network and everyone had already built all these structures and bridges and I was just so thankful I could just walk back and grab all the stuff I dropped.

and then I sank my bike

In Chapter 3 now and if anyone wants a spoiler-free tip it's do NOT spend too much time in Chapter 2, there is so much stuff in here.

Protip when you get to chapter 3, take the time to build the road outside the first base. My Bridge Link skyrocketed as soon as I hit chapter 3 with people constantly using it.

Oh yeah absolutely do that.

ADDITIONAL protip on this: you can hijack the MULE trucks and load them up with materials to make building roads go way faster. which makes it easier to deliver more with the truck. roads are OP.

It slows you down and uses more stamina. But trying to bounce between grabbing straps is so hard I usually do it anyway.

Ah I should probably avoid this topic but I'd appreciate opinions direct from fellow B8ers. I was planning to get Death Stranding and was kind of hyped but I heard some reviews that weren't too kind... I also thought it'd be a shorter game but I read time estimates that have it running 50+ hours? And kind of have time management issues at the moment so fitting a monster game into that would be tricky.

So I guess my question is.

(1) Should I get it? (I usually stick to RPGs but I loved Shadow of the Colossus so the concept of travelling a deserted landscape kind of appealed to me?)

(2) If I get it: how compatible would it be to say, with the game not muted/volume still on, listen to podcasts while also playing it? I mean if there's long stretches where you're just travelling from point A to point B and there's a little background music from the game with nothing else, I'm thinking of multitasking opportunities, though it might destroy the immersion aspect...

Anyways I know the game just came out so you're only a few days in but would appreciate some quick yes-or-nos on those two questions, thanks!

I've been doing a lot of Giant Bomb watching during deliveries

There's a lot of cutscenes and story though so you have to be ready to pause when those pop up. Also probably want to listen to the game when in BT areas so you can pay attention to where they are

Really wish people would build more roads in the bottom section of the Chapter 3 area. Not really sure how the online works, but the first road I found was built by someone else and I've had to do most of the work on the others. And I'm not exactly outpacing people, I see plenty of structures around that need effort.

I'm pretty fascinated by the online element, it's just really cool.

You can play it entirely offline, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's Asynchronous Multiplayer so you never play other players but structures they build in the world will show up in your world and vice versa and you're earning Likes and giving Likes to others as you all work together to build your connections across the country

Are you familiar with messages (not pvp or coop) in Dark Souls games? It's like that, but with actual useful shit.

Nah I am for sure. They have some materials contributed but it doesnt seem like I'm getting anyone going out of their way for them. And I think some are in optional network areas too.

Absolutely do not reccomend trying to play this without the online. It's something that's always on in the background and you don't interact directly with others, but you can see their buildings and it's a big deal. Think Dark Souls but less direct.

Yeah but if I don't start playing the game for say, another week, after it's been out a week and a half, won't everything just be all built out before I start? Or the building sharing is only for people who are around the same point in the game? But then what if I get further in the game than someone else who built something...

I've never played the Dark Souls games either, sorry.

You have to bring areas online so the first time you go through them there won't be anything, then once you bring an area online you'll be put in a server with 75 or so people and you'll see the things they've built.

However Timefall exists in this game which is rain that accelerates the aging of everything it hits so it's a built in mechanic for older structures to eventually rot away and disappear.
