Boomers are doing what they do best: Shouting on the internet.

The youth and by youth I mean anyone who understands how to rotate a pdf are firing back at disgruntled Olds with an all-encompassing "OK, Boomer." The phrase has become a rallying cry for all who've had to deal with some old fart complaining about how younger generations are entitled and lazy.

"Teenagers use it to reply to cringey YouTube videos, Donald Trump tweets, and basically any person over 30 who says something condescending about young people and the issues that matter to them," New York Times reporter Taylor Lorenz explained in an article about the phrase.

Kalhan Rosenblatt, who also reported on the meme for NBC, explained it as "a culmination of annoyance and frustration at a generation young people perceive to be worsening issues like climate change, political polarization, and economic hardship."

The phase is especially useful for situations when you simply don't have the time or energy to unpack why someone's in the wrong, and need to shut it all down with a dismissive "OK, Boomer." Predictably, the Boomers are pissed.

Maureen Dowd, a columnist at the New York Times, tied the phrase to Rep. Katie Hill's resignation after her relationship with a former campaign staffer was revealed through revenge porn. Dowd was offended that her coworker and national hero Shawn McCreesh responded with "OK, Boomer" when she expressed "bewilderment" at Millennials' penchant for taking photos of everything they do.

Radio host Bob Lonsberry claimed in a now-deleted tweet that the phrase "OK, Boomer" is akin to the n-word. His take was quickly ratio'd with "OK, Boomer."

I'm Gen X and I must confess to a little shadenfreude at Boomers here. I was raised by Boomers heard all their bullshit (there was good stuff too, to be fair). I don't think Gen X really targeted Boomers politically, but Boomers clearly targeted the generation before them. Seems they can't stand the taste of their own medicine.

Not only is that entire article kind of cringy in general, it kind of shows an incredibly lack of generational self-awareness on the part of the writer.

If any generation spends way too much time being angry about things on the Internet, it sure as fuck isn't the Boomers.

The youngest Boomers are generally in their mid-50s. But we can't actually expect Millennials to get the math right. They're the generation that grew up in schools that were too afraid to actually give grades for fear of hurting people's feelings.

IIRC, Boomers were born between 1946-1964 or something.

Millennials I want to say like 1981-1994 or 1996. I don't recall, but I think the term is very commonly misplaced either way.

I think what's going on is the same generational "disgust" towards gen Z or whatever the new up and comers are, that boomers had/have with millennials. It's all kinda stupid, no matter who you talk to, everything was better in the older days when you had to face more hardships head on that we hadn't engineered a way around.

I mean, let's look at air conditioning. Older boomers probably pretty commonly had to deal with interior climate control that is shit by today's standard. I know I had crappier climate control as a kid than my kids have now. I don't think that makes any of the parties more or less badass, it's just, if you don't need to live like it was 30 or 60 years ago, why should you, or why should one be shamed for *not* doing so?

As a youngin I can comfirm that ok boomer is hella hilarious and it is mainly used at boomers, but occasionally used towards young old people (30-40) as a joke. Or sometimes you say it (playfully) at someone +- 2 years your age, just for kicks. When not directed at actual boomers, its just a funny thing to say. When directed at boomers...

The whole of the 80s and first half of the 90s was one huge Boomer circle jerk over how awesome they were in the 60s. You'd think they solved racism, sexism, and ended the Vietnam war by just smoking a shit load of pot and having loads of sex. They were obsessed with letting you know that they were cooler than you when they were your age. You quickly got sick of it.
