It's now been 10 years since Disney released The Princess and the Frog, which was a 2D animated film released well into the GCI era, meant to be a throwback to the "Renaissance" (The Little Mermaid through Tarzan), and launched the current "Revival" era, and I've always been kinda disappointed that they didn't stick with it more than they did. I'm not saying that I think, say, Wreck-It Ralph or Big Hero 6 should have been hand-drawn, but Tangled and Frozen definitely feel like 2D films under the guise of 3D films. I've always loved traditional animation and in many cases prefer it to GCI, and Disney in particular has a rich history of beautiful hand-drawn films. I think it would be interesting to see them release another 2D film within the next decade to see how well it holds up at this point. I know it's a far cry to hope that they make a legitimate comeback, but as a throwback once every 10 years or so I think it would be neat.

No reason to stop the CG, but a nice break for hand-drawn animation wouldn't go amiss.

A million times yes. American animation hasn't been doing too well this year, besides TS4 and HTTYD3, so maybe audiences are ready for a change in style.

I like them of course, but I get why they don't do them as often. I think in the case of Princess and the Frog, after Disney realizing that Tiana is by far the least popular princess of this millennium, they probably feel that hand drawn movies, and the princess in it, are harder to market to modern day girls, especially when the girls are used to every other movie being 3D, they might feel like the characters don't pop out as much, and they can't relate to them as easily. That's just marketing, and not a reflection of the reality for most people. But anything one can do to make a product more successful is usually worth doing. I'm in favor of hand-drawn though.

Glad to see an overwhelming "yes" result. I was expecting more of a split and insistence that hand-drawn is dead.

Much as I'd like to see a new hand drawn disney movie it is never going to happen. There just isnt enough people skilled in the art that are still active in the industry for such a large scale production. They had enough trouble just making the animated sequence for Mary Poppins Returns and that doesnt even look very good.

Wait are you guys using "hand drawn" and "2D" interchangeably? Because thinking about it I don't actually care if it's traditional or not. Disney could easily make a good looking computer animated 2D movie if they cared, and they don't.

Though it is really cool when people do use traditional methods (hi Cuphead) I don't think that's necessary.
