Hatano - 6900000000 (more comments): Ooh, I get what I was trying to think of earlier. Pain of Salvation's "Be" album! The band even set up a number for callers to leave messages on God's answering machine:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtSbat1Hqbo

So 6900000000 feels kinda like some weird j-pop spinoff of one of my favorite albums. (Well, I don't listen to many albums so it's not like Be has much competition. If it's an album I've lsitened to more than once it is, by default, one of my favorites.)

Aaanywho...

Yanmi - Ghost Girl: 5.4. I'm not really into ghosts, so the subject matter was kinda "meh". Song was fine though, like the abrupt the ending.

Hatano - Just a Sunny Day For You: 6 . It seems like a simple song, but it's nice for what it is.

Yanmi - In the Flowing Scenery:

Step 1: Flip two coins. If both coins come up "heads", proceed to step 2A. If both coins come up "tails", proceed to step 2B. If the coins do not match, proceed to 2C.

2A: Roll 1d10. That number is the song's current score.

2B: Roll 1d10, add a negative sign to the number rolled. That is the score's current score of less than o.

2C: Repeat step 1. If coins match this time, proceed to steps 2A or 2B as normal; if coins continue to not match, proceed to step 3.

3: Hiss loudly at the song, the device you are using to listen to the song, and at the coins (or whatever website you are using if you are using virtual coins) and then skitter into the night. If you are capable of shapeshifting, I suggest turning into a Gorgon at this point and letting your snake hair join in the hissing.

Today's official score is : *hiss*

..Yeah, I'm not really in the mood for a suicide song, so I'm just gonna skip this next one, thank you anyway.

Tokage Meu - Clown: 9. I really needed something like this right now, thank you.

MAYOI SAKYU - Sweets Parade: 5.5. It's cute and better than I expected from the name.

MAYOI SAKYU - Renai Circulation: Been a while since I've heard a cover that's so virtually identical to the original. 9; I mean, it's a perfect rendition of a song I've already repeatedly expressed fondness for, so it can't really be any less.

VGaming - Thank You For Playing: 9. I <3 the auto-translated lyrics and never want to know what an actual translation would be. Singing about how everyone plays together:

Wizards, kitchen illnesses, small animals, even dragons

I don't care what that was supposed to be or even what a "kitchen illness" is. I like to think that the song is so openly inclusive of everyone that it fully embraces otherkin who identify as assorted illnesses and germs; I don't know if there is anyone who identifies as a virus, but if you're out there, there's a singing dragon who'll accept you and play games with you and that is beautiful.

...seriously though, let me have my fun auto-lyrics and interpretation of them.

And now that I'm in a better mood, let's go back to what I refused to deal with earlier...

Yotsuha - My R: 3. It's...not as painful as I expected, but this isn't exactly doing a lot to change my personal view of "I don't want to listen to songs about suicide" and while I wouldn't call her voice bad, it doesn't make me want to rush out and find any other songs by her either.

Well that was a pretty good night of music. Have I given out three 9s in one post before this topic? I feel like running into that many high-scoring songs in rapid succession is pretty rare.

well, i'm glad you at least didn't hate any blythe & joustra songs you heard (though i know you think listening to music you hate is a valuable experience too haha).

i hadn't heard scatterbrain before, it's like... an even less serious version of the scatman john style of music? don't know if i like it much but it's interesting, yeah.

i also hadn't heard andy's neighborhood before (nor did i know blythe & joustra composed the toy story 2 soundtrack) (edit: well, i probably did know at one point but i forgot). i like this. i like swing music so i always have a soft spot for VGM that does a pastiche of it.

i personally love anthill from the a bug's life soundtrack.

if you're observant, you may notice there's a lack of kaf in this post despite a new song going up earlier today. I'm not that big on it. It's not bad but it doesn't really suit her, vocally.

oh yeah also... since virtual cat had its 2nd anniversary (also, noworld had their 1st at the same time and it was a headache trying to watch both) yesterday, i might as well throw in one more

Takanashi Metro - Pretender: 9.5, The best version of a song I already liked. I didn't remember the name, but I see that i praised her voice while disliking the songs she was singing... so it seems quite appropriate that she gets a really high score once she sings a song I actually like.

Ruri - Racing into the Night: 5.5. It's fine, but I never really felt anything towards it.

Kagura Nana - Nanairo Sekai: 5.5. Something about this feels almost parodic,. It's just too energetic, too rainbow-y, too much of everything that it starts to feel like a joke or parody or sarcasm or something.

Vivienne Kensington - Robinson: *before listening* ...Judging by that picture of a kid on a bike, I'm guessing this is going to be a horribly depressing song, right? The kid in the picture is going to be either dead or in a coma and then depending on how bleak things are, Vivi may die by the end too.

*later* Considering the lyrics about floating into the sky and them being reborn, yeah, this is totally an "everyone's dead" song.

...Ehh, I don't usually go for this level of sadness, but the song is quite good and I think I'm going to give it an 8 anyway.

Speaking of songs that get high scores in spite of not being my type of thing lyrically, I'm going to detour a bit back to a song from my first (solo) ranking topic.

Japanese Breakfast - Road Head:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCmLjb-ocPY

Came in 17th place out of 200 songs and might have been slightly too low even then. It's arguably the most sexually explicit song from either topic (it at least has the most explicit title), but it's a wonderful song. The sense of hopelessness, doing everything possible to save a doomed relationship and having it all be for nothing anyway... it hits the exact point of "sad, but not openly suicidal" that I'm drawn to. Just a perfect nomination that I've gone back to regularly over the past year, even though on paper it seems like something that should have hit last place.

Robinson, while obviously a different song in every possible way, gets a similar reaction. Yeah, I've failed songs for less than what it does; but it does what it does so well, and I like the singer so much, that it can get away with a high placement anyway.

[I probably already hyped Road Head either last topic or already at this topic, didn't I? Feels like one of those songs I won't shut up about, like Mentos Theme.]

Roppo Rikuru - you: 5.39; I don't know much about Higruashi, song might work better if I had context for it.

Roppo Rikuru - STEP TO YOU: 7.

MuMenkyo - The World's Lifespan and the Last Day: 8.

Isekai Jouchou - Chaining Intention: 4.8.

Virtual Cat/Crim Nanakusa/Midy - 404 not found: 5. I usually like Cat's soundscapes, but this one doesn't make me think of anything. It's nice and all, but it's just random background music to me.

Basically the whole #e_veryone crew - swim: Also 5, maybe like a "5.02" or something to give it a slight nudge over completely generic 5s. It's nice and all, but it doesn't spark my imagination.

I'm not terribly observant

Virtual "Kako" Cat - Moonlit Night: 7.5. Were I to build a meditation playlist (spoiler: I'm never actually going to do that), I think I'd want this song to follow "Namco Museum Volume 1 - Museum" that I posted earlier. That song had the ambiance of floating in space with a satellite orbiting around you and blinking. This is a more upbeat preparing to return to the world sound that I find compliments it quite nicely. In theory, I mean, I haven't actually tried listening to both songs back-to-back but that's where my mind went.

A Bug's Life - Anthill:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgauRzikq2U

It's not bad.!?; (I could not decide on a punctuation for that statement, so take all of them). With the bird sounds added in, I kinda wish the song were a bit more laidback to work as some nature ambiance... maybe? It feels like I'm supposed to have a peaceful nature song that I like at any rate, even though I don't and there's no particular evidence that I'd ever actually like such a thing.

Though I remember the game being action-y enough that a more laidback song wouldn't have worked for it, so I suppose I'm looking in the wrong place anyway. Still, not bad. Probably... 5.5-ish? 5.6.

didn't expect you to run through all of them in one sitting.

guess that means i'm finally out of in-topic songs now. apologies for throwing basically the kitchen sink at you for this optional followup topic mostly since i haven't had anyone else to share them with, and i hope you didn't mind them too much on the whole

oh yeah... i might as well also add one specific song response too. metro has a pretty dramatic vocal range and most of her songs are pretty different not only as songs in general but also with how she uses her voice. Her sounding fairly different here was a major reason I included it, since otherwise I'd pretty much settled on not sharing her again, given that iirc i didn't get a single positive reaction across like... 6 songs prior, maybe? i'm also not very observant so i might be way off there lol. EDIT: 7 actually, though 3 are with her non-vtuber persona. you also said you disliked her voice at least once too

It's fine. There were a lot of good songs and if I needed a break, I could have said something. Thank you very much!

Also, I really wouldn't pay much attention when I say I dislike someone's voice. I'm proven wrong on a regular basis and keep meaning to stop saying that, but like creating a highly specialized playlists, I never actually do so.

...though if I didn't say things horribly negative about DIR EN GREY, then BlackDra90n wouldn't have been motivated to prove me wrong by nominating Ranunculus. So I only got one of the best songs from that topic by completely dismissing the band?

To (possibly mis)quote Claptrap: It was secretly a ruse all along! I do know what I'm doing!

Aaanywho, I do want to try an actual third topic someday... listening to a bunch of songs is fun, but I kinda miss working with a specific list and getting to give each song multiple listens and everything. that actually comes with making an actual list. Though obviously I'll need a break and it's too soon to do any actual planning, it's something I look forward to trying eventually.

interesting point about the bird sounds feeling kinda disjointed from the rest of the tune in anthill. i think they work because for me, the whole song evokes a "hey we're walking around in nature in the sun" feeling because of the extremely folksy aesthetic of the instrumentation but yeah, i get what you mean.

And now some hastily thrown together statistics!

Total number of songs to have received a numerical score (excluding ones I added myself): 543

Average Score: 6.04928360957

Lowest Score: -5 (DJ Fox). He's the only artist to score less than a 0; only five songs--including Fox's--got less than a 1.

Four songs got 10s. I did not write their names down and don't wish to go over the entire topic again right now.

35 songs got a 9 or better.

108 songs got scores of below average (less than 5)

400 songs received above average scores (at least 5.1)

Which means 35 songs are duking it out for "most average song of all time" (exactly 5 points).

2 songs received non-numerical scores: "Splotchy" and "Kwyjibo".

Around 15 other songs or so were given either no score at all, a randomly generated score, or something so incoherent as to not count for anything.

I said I didn't like using more than one decimal point and largely held to that; only 10 songs used more than the tenths place for their score.

...Well not very interesting statistics or worth how much time I spent on it, but I wanted to see what the actual average score worked out to, so here we are.
