hitona kohigashi - kokoro nashi: 7. It was going to be a lower score, but one line near the end of the song:

Say, if I had a heart
How would I find it?

Is worth at least a point and a half on its own.

And now I'm going to go off topic and do a night of listening to whatever I want, to try to recalibrate my opinions a bit. Will probably hit some songs from both ranking topics, as well as whatever I feel like clicking at the time.

1.Pac-Land Main Theme:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRbtaz51ALE

Current Score: I don't know. Probably a 7, though I am loathe to admit it.

Write-Up: It's getting worse. I now hear this theme whenever I click this topic. It has burrowed into my brain and consumed everything.

I actually hated Pac-Land for most of my life. Had a slightly bad experience with the arcade machine early in my youth... was very briefly at an out of town arcade and got to pick one game to play for a few minutes. I was drawn to Pac-Land because OMG PAC-MAN HAS ARMS & LEGS which was apparently mind-blowing at the time. I had no idea what I was doing (it has an unconvential control scheme) and died quite quickly.

I hadn't noticed that arcade had a deluxe sit-down version of the original Star Wars arcade game... sure it was my fault for not carefully examining everything in the arcade before choosing (I wasn't particularly bright), but I always blamed it on Pac-Land.

I never saw a Deluxe Star Wars Arcade Game ever again. Le sigh. Le boo hoo.

2.David Benoit - Spare Time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlpjC8CKG40

Score: 4.

Original Write-Up:

Spare Time (David Benoit): Do you want an instrumental version of one of the themes from "Garfield Gets a Life"? Was there ever anyone who watched that special, heard this song, and said "yes, I want more of this, but jazzier and without the lyrics!"?

I still have no idea why this track exists. It's alright. It wants to be slightly jazzy background music and it is. There's no high points, or low points, it just...exists on the Garfield Jazz Album as random background music.

3.Spider-Man: The Animated Series (Genesis) - Theme:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jni4zd9Sdgc

Current Score: Somewhere between 1 & 6.

Write-Up: I absolute despised this song for many years. It was the type of song I would only play whenever I wanted to suffer or needed to remind myself of what terrible music sounded like. But after so, so long (the game came out in 95), I've developed an almost fondness for the track? Like... I've been making fun of this song for so, so very long that it's almost painful vocal samples are rather charming. You know what, let's go with that 6, I actually do like this song tonight.

4.kaneel - Aspiration:
https://kaneel.bandcamp.com/track/aspiration

Current Score: 6

Original Write-Up:

I think I'll give best song on the album to "Aspiration". ...I don't know why, honestly. Listened to it three times tonight, so I can safely say I like it? So long as there are absolutely no follow up questions or expectations of explanations.

Not a bad song, but I'm really not sure why I was into that night. I still have nothing in particular to say about it.

5.+Tek - Acid Pickle Rick:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EViShDNL5M

Original Score: 8

Current Score: 10

Writeup: It's catchy, funny, and one of the songs from the main ranking topic that I've gone back to the most often. That it only came in 71st place is a travesty. While it would never win, it could have at least stood as the lowest ranked score to get a 10--acting as a sort of gatekeeper to true greatness.

6.Paramore - Fake Happy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8vsuOXZBXc

Current Score: Possibly a low 10, like Acid Pickle Rick.

...well that's a pair of songs, alright.

Writeup:

Coming in at 63rd place (out of 200 songs) in my first ranking topic, this is another of the biggest ranking regrets. I still don't have much to say about the song itself, but that was an abysmal placement.

7.Keith Power - We All Lift Together:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwSB1x26ExM

Current Score: 5.1

Original Writeup:

Every time I see how high up on the list this song is, I have to ask myself if I really want a prison work song from a game I've never heard of to be ranked above so many songs I've praised.

Then I listen to it and remember that yeah, I really do want it up here.

[FINAL NOTES: Even on the fourth trip through all the songs, I still look at this song and feel "that song wasn't that good" until I click the video again. It's weird.]

Coming in at 61st place, it's something I feel I ranked too highly. Apparently I was really into the song in late 2018, but it does nothing for me now.

8.Coldplay - Violet Hill:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srg63poeoqQ

Current Score: 10.5

Writeup:

It's hard to comment on this song because I really don't want to get into a political argument and that second verse is arguably the most politically charged verse of any song in either topic.

...actually I forgot Americans from the second topic. Either way, this song came in at 26th place and is way too low... probably would wind up in 4th place if I re-ranked that topic.

9.Misoshita - Chikanikai no Resistance:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqqiv6NbXaA

Original Score: 9.3

Current Score: 10.

Writeup:

How did this only get 57th Place?! It was in 19th on the beta list, which feels like a more accurate placement.

10.Cryptovolans - Bleached Coral:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62xv3sx3spc

Original Score: 10

Current Score: 10

Original Writeup:

[Something about the early part of the song makes me feel like Im drowning... it gets harder to breathe and brings back a lot of negative memories. I can't downvote it because its a unique experience and I should treasure them, but its probably a bit too physically painful to reach the top tier of songs.]

That seems to have summed it up pretty well. It's stressful and intense; which is good, but perhaps a bit too stressful to break into the 10s.

[Final Thoughts: This is an interesting track. Usually my deep water phobia isn't severe enough to effect me, but something about this track was really intense on the first few listens. Now that I'm more adjusted to it, it doesn't hit quite so hard--which is probably a good thing.

I can't find any words to describe the song itself, none that would mean anything at any rate.]

The effect is a bit diminished these days since I've listened to it so many times, but it's still a great song.

As for said negative memories... nah. Way too sensitive to post publicly and I don't want to dig out the pastebin password to hide a secret confession. Perhaps next full ranking topic.

11.Matchbox Twenty - Back 2 Good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X5Dr-uFVGw

Original Score: 10
Current Score: 10.5

Writeup: I should take the chance to do more than revisit songs from the ranking topic, but I wanted to hear this right now, so nyah.

, I could say so much
But I don't go there 'cause I don't want to

Seemed like an appropriate line for where I left off at the last writeup.

...okay, let's find something happier that's not from the last topic...

12.Beetlejuice the Musical - Barbara 2.0:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PhbcVIMAgs

Current Score: 9

I had to listen to so many Broadway songs to find a full set of nominations for that Broadway Duets topic. I literally couldn't think of more than one song to nominate, so I spent the entire night hunting down duet playlists, lists of the best duets, and just randomly hunting any "[licensed property] the musical" I could find because I'm the type of person that loves those.

I'm quite happy with this find! I've mentioned having a fondness for these types of lyrics about being one's true self and blah blah blah. The actual album is subpar, but I like this one specific song.

13.Superman (Arcade) - Main BGM 1 & 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdRORntgWfE

Current Score: 5.2

Writeup: It's kinda amusing hearing this low quality, beep-y rendition of the iconic Superman theme. Also, I have a bit of a softspot for this arcade game... no idea why, but my mother and I actually played all the way through it at an arcade one day. No idea why; it's not a great game, neither of us were really Superman fans, and we must have spent a fortune feeding quarters into the damn machine...

14.Radical Rex (Sega CD) - Intro:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq1fySmrE1s

Current Score: 6.

Writeup: I swear there was a version of this without the attract screen added, but finding it would take more time than it's worth. This song is so bad that it kinda loops around to being amusing. Not great, but it's usually worth a quick laugh.

15.Back to the Future Parts 2 & 3 - 1985 Theme:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdLTAyd3Kg8

Current Score: 8

Writeup: I actually really like this little tune, but the last person I showed it to completely despised it, so I haven't nominated it anywhere.

16.Virtual Cat - Dancing With Cat:
https://twitter.com/neko_vtuber/status/1227875636712095745

Current Score: 8

Writeup: Cheating to sneak in an actually relevant song, but I decided I wanted to listen to Virtual Cat as the last song of the night, so nyah. It's good.

Rankings:

Back 2 Good > Violet Hill > Bleached Coral > Acid Pickle Rick > Fake Happy > Chikanikai no Resistance > Barbara 2.0 > 1985 > Dancing With Cat > Pac-Land > My Real Cool Radical Rex > Aspiration > Spider-Man Genesis > Superman Arcade > We All Lift Together > Spare Time

...eh, maybe move Spider-Man up two spaces. Those three are pretty interchangable.

Ruri & Other Guy - uchiage hanabi: I really like Ruri's performance and was initially disappointed you held out on me by not posting this sooner... but I don't care about her duet partner, to a point I don't even want to bother finding out his name or if you've posted anything else with him. All-in-all, it's probably a 6.3 to a 6.5-ish song? It's not like he ruins the song or anything, it's just not as good as it would be if she sang solo.
yeah and that's why i didn't. he's just some guy who i couldn't care less about either and contributes nothing of value

some other notes:
i really like how they used an actual 3d render based on the image in charles

i was curious how you'd react to the lyrics in mousou kanshou daishou renmei. it's funny because the rest of the lyrics are kind of relatively romantic trite, but the part you weren't big on actually meant "i detest love"

Emma - Hello: 5.6

Emma - Karakuri Pierrot: 6. It suits her quite well, but it mostly just made me miss the Hibiki Ao duet, which I naturally had to go listen to again after this version ended.

Also, I honestly didn't recall who she was singing with in that duet. Surprised it was YuNi... one would have thought she'd have left a bigger impression. Oh well.

Emma - Fixer: 5, don't think it really worked for her. Also, I was sure you posted another version of this song, but I'm having a hard time finding it if so.

Emma - Glow: 7.5. I like the story here, but it doesn't hit quite as hard as some of Kaf's songs (for better or worse).

arurandeisu/fukuyamaster - connect (...?): My head hurts now. I've never watched Madoka and don't think I even watched the intro (I know what the series is and it's not for me), but the song is so incredibly familiar that it feels like I've heard it a hundred times. No idea where I could have heard it... do any of the MUGEN versions of the Madoka cast play the theme for victory poses or a dramatic super or anything like that? Not actually expecting an answer, just talking to myself.

Either way, 4-ish. It's not his best or most amusing work.

mochizuki himari - parade: No.

On that note, I'm gonna bounce to the VGM rating topic before that has a chance to start getting out of control & probably get in a little FF7 Remake before bed.

as a side note, regarding the parade "cover", it's surely obvious from just the imagery alone, but the big joke of it was just that she revealed that she was basically just a normal person behind the camera unlike her character setting "implied", and that to make up for that and make that setting a reality she'd decided to give her all as an idol now, only to belt that out and piss off the neighbours. it's meant to be bad, so... yes. very standard stuff really but i thought it was an amusing enough thing to include as part of a gag section there alongside middle aged men failing to become magical girls and whatever's going on in the following two covers

I know and I have a fondness for "so bad, it's good" songs... that wasn't it. </.<

sasaguma kuran - momoiro kataomoi: 4, I guess? It wasn't very memorable, but I didn't really dislike it much.

cyber girls quartet - otsukimi recital: 6.

paw guimauve/inami huyuka - haru ni ichiban chikai machi: 6. I want to like it more than I do.

hanamaru hareru - dadadada tenshi: 3.8. I wouldn't say i was a fan of YuNi's version, but this singer is not on YuNi's level.

mitsuki neu - digital life hacker: 6.

enma ruri - reve no rakujitsu: 5.3.

azki - hikari: 7.

Incidentally, I decided to skip ahead to the song you advised me not to listen to and I have no idea why you thought I wouldn't like it? Like, I thought I'd praised low tones from backing music, discordant sounds, and things that are different often enough that you'd expect me to really like it.

And I might? Somewhere between 6 and 8, at any rate.

Ah, thank you for that clarification. Good to know I didn't just imagine another version of that song.

isekai joucho - housenka: 8.5

fukuyamaster - inochi ni kirawarete iru: 8. I was worried that I was going to hate him doing a more serious song, but I'm becoming increasingly convinced he could sing anything. Wish it was the full song though.

harano oni - inochi ni kirawarete iru: *brefore listening* Well, I feel bad for this singer--or their placement on the list o' songs at any rate. Trying to live up to either of the last two songs is difficult and doing the exact same song as one of them is...ill-advised.

*after* 6.5. It's good, yeah, but there are obviously other versions I prefer.

viankie - god knows: 5. I'd been looking forward this song for a while now, as I wanted to hear more from her and I knew the song, but I don't know that it worked for her. It's possible that I'm just too used to the original and this would fare better without the comparison?

kazuya okada - ein fraulein: 6.3-ish for now, with a note that I want to come back to this in about a week. It's interesting, but I think it's trying too hard to be EPIC... but it's intriguing enough that I'm willing to give it another try later.

virtual cat feat. tetra - dekisokonai no i love you (remix): 4.8. I don't know why it doesn't work for me, but it doesn't.

water music 86 endlicheri: 5.8. From the image, I was expecting something far more dark and intense. Kinda disapointed, but it's still nice enough.

kanade kanon - teenager forever animal crossing remix: 4.5. It's impressive and I want to give it a lot of praise, I just don't...actually want to listen to it...

hololive chorus: 4.3-ish. It's nice seeing everyone, but that song has a pulsing beat that gives me a headache. Factor in that even people I like are only getting two sentences at best and there's no way it's worth enduring the song to see them.

...which seems like it should be lower than a 4, but Aqua & Azki together gives a considerable amount of bias in the song's favor...

ueiku - kokoro assort: 5.2

YouTuber (obake remix): 7? I really appreciate that the song is so drastically different from the original.

hoshino meguri - aimai retsujou lover: Slightly higher than an 8, maybe like "8.04"? One of those weird points where 8 feels too low and 8.1 feels slightly too high.

Fukuya Master Song: 6. Not his best song, but it's fine.

DADDY DADDY DO: 5.1? It's got a nice beat and I don't have anything against it, so I'd probably take it over a totally average song, but there's also nothing about it that I'm really attached to.

Tokyo Hyakki Yakou: 7. Much cute, very vow.

Valhallelujah: 3; a parody of religious music is still a bit too close to actually being religious music for my taste and none of the jokes really landed for me.

The In-Between: 9. The singer is a bit too scream-y for my tastes, but I actually enjoy it quite a bit.

Don't You Worry Child: 4. It's inoffensive enough.

10th Man Down: 9.5. You would think this song is a bit too dark (soldier driven mad by the horrors of war and seems to commit suicide) for me, but it does a lot of things I love (Symphonic Metal + spoken word sections + I like both the singer and the person speaking) and it's the type of thing I'm in the mood for.

Skullcrusher Mountain: 9+. Hey, it's been a while since someone posted a song I was already familiar with! This popped up on one of my Spotify playlists (back when I had and was using Spotify, obviously) and I developed a brief obsession with it. I've listened to it dozens of times already, so it's safe to say that I like it quite a bit. I probably should just give it the full 10, but I feel like I want to hold back a little and keep it a vague "more than 9" score.

Okay, I wanted to listen to all of CPU's songs twice to decide what score to give, so I listened to more than it looks like I did. Much late, very break now, woof.

much wow

okay, uh...

i really wanted to definitively at least stop doing big spam posts any more for current stuff since it's clear i'm wasting my time picking everything i listen to, especially given... various other circumstances, but then i got caught up on songs last night and i feel i'd regret it if i don't share these

Oda Nobuhime/Mochizuki Himari - Ii Aru Fanclub
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_KxYWjnmC4
Nobuhime's retiring in a few days, having fallen into irrelevance after being one of the most... controversial vtubers out there ever, so she's getting a bunch of collabs off her bucket list. Contrary to popular belief, Himari really wasn't secretly her all along.

Shishigami Leona - Catch The Moment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGWjzMkPN1Q
Leona's problem as an a-list Re:ACT singer is that while she's clearly great, her voice is really TOO suitable to certain types of pop songs. Still, it's extremely clear that her cover of this one is a very good one.

Koto Miyuri - Kawaki wo Ameku
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmdDElRjDu8
it's no secret that this b-list Re:ACT member isn't the best person to have covered this song from DomeKano, or even the best one I've shared... but the thing about this song is that it's a song where you try to get a balance right in how much you pour your emotions into it, and I feel she nails it. Took me a little bit before I got into it but once I did... anyway, I hope you enjoy it as much.

Yuuzutsu Tear - Deichuu ni Saku and Kaze ni Naru
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZnafNmphL8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KR0YD4zXWAI
the former one is probably the best thing (even if it's a cover) to come from METEOR to date. The latter is... Apologies if you haven't watched The Cat Returns, this is purely a nostalgia pick because I was shocked when i heard it

Enma Ruri - Harumodoki and Nandemonaiya
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MCfLA5l_5s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqnG8iDus00
two anisong covers from oregairu and kimi no na wa. nice, simple stuff

Tenjin Kotone - Angel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xk4nbIhSQIo
Basically throwing her to the wolves here given that she has to compete with Nanase Taku's cover which is really too good to hope to compare to, but I wanted to just say that she's still good, because she is!

KMNZ LIZ - Yoru ni Kakeru
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pYhr-kXsqo
Same boat here. Another great cover.

Kaf - Chuburarin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KYI6APM208
Not the kind of Kaf cover you're probably hoping for, but a very good one nonetheless.

Isekai Jouchou - Diorama Drama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftCqxjpxdc8
This hasn't gone up at the time of posting, but my opinion of the music direction they've been taking with Isekai Jouchou is so high that I would not be surprised if it proves to be the best thing in this post.
...

===

...
and now to get to the ones I really wanted to get onto

Monokaki Aer - No Doubt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGqky81UJkY
I still don't understand how she's this good. *partying intensifies*

Hibiki Ao - Kuusou Seikatsu and Miren Record
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fC6-66ymGk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuBmLP3OGFk
Two covers of vtuber original songs I don't think I ever posted, come to think of it. The former's from Akasaka Masaka and composed by Crim Nanakusa, and the latter's a now fairly old original song for Tokino Sora in collaboration with 40mP. I'm not that big a fan of Akasaka Masaka so I dunno if I'd recommend the original but I definitely would for the latter if you like it. A lot of others covered it in the past. Like, a lot of a lot, to the point that I'm actually surprised I've only heard it a couple of times. There are possibly hundreds. Anyway yeah Hibiki Ao doing covers again was the main motivator for me posting, inevitably. Also, since I just mentioned a Crim Nanakusa song...

#e_Veryone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYAnXOKiWaU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wGhbdP-PgI

Minami Nami/Fukuyamaster - DADDY DADDY DO: 5.3. I do prefer the song with him singing it, but it's still not great.

Oda Nobuhime/Mochizuki Himari - Ii Aru Fanclub: 4; sorry, but I prefer the version you posted in #168 considerably more.

Shishigami Leona - Catch The Moment: 5. A few of the lines are decent, but it's one of those things that just feels like a standard anime song. (Probably because it is.)

Penguin's Detour: 3; remove the monotonous clicking and it'd be a bit better.

Koto Miyuri - Kawaki wo Ameku: 6.5; it's solid and a noted improvement over the Project AID version (even though I gather you disagree on that point).

Yuuzutsu Tear - Deichuu ni Saku: 8.5. Very good song.

Kaze ni Naru: 6.5; it's actually quite charming, but I'm afraid I have no idea what The Cat Returns is.

Unrelated to anything, but everytime I look at this title, I am sad that it is not "Kaze ni Nare". Also, everytime I read The Cat Returns, I have flashbacks to "The Cat Came Back" (let's be thankful this isn't actually related to that old novelty song as I never particularly cared for it).

Seven songs seems like enough to say that I made progress tonight.

i actually never thought about the project aid version, i probably consider her better than them. was mainly thinking about souya ichika's one, which i... actually may not have ever shared even though i was certain i did. oops? maybe it was in the first topic idk

still, even then, as i was saying, while i prefer ichika's voice miyuri did an even better cover imo

Doesn't look like you linked it last topic--when Flamingo was eliminated, you only posted one video of her talking to illustrate how her voice sounded different. Only other reference I can find about her is how you almost nominated a Ryushen song instead of her cover of Flamingo.

I'll listen to it tomorrow.

Souya Ichika - Kawaki wo Ameku: 6.5. I slightly prefer Miyuri's version (feel free to retroactively raise her score up to, like, 6.8 or something to reflect this fact), but this is also good.

Kaze ni Naru (Original): 6. It was kinda interesting watching a highly condensed version of the film without any dialogue, but I liked the other one better (and wish to retroactively give it a 7).

There's something off about how loud the guitar is on Yuuzutsu Tear's version, like the sound mixing is slightly off, and I dunno... something about it being less polished makes the song feel more pure or something.

...Eh, let's retroactively raise it to an 8, for today anyway. I want to listen to it today; just...don't expect that to hold up on any other day, you should know how rapidly things change.

Enma Ruri - Harumodoki: 6.7. Above average anime type song.

Enma Ruri - Nandemonaiya: 8, though I don't wish to discuss it at this point in time.

...Also if you make a time travel joke about that, I will growl at you and it'll be very awkward and uncomfortable for everyone.

Tenjin Kotone - Angel: *before listening* I was going to say I don't recall any songs named Angel in this topic, but going back through the topic it was apparently one that I couldn't decide on a score for.

*after* 4.

KMNZ LIZ - Yoru ni Kakeru: 7.7; I dunno why.

Kaf - Chuburarin: 7+, for another vague "I'm giving it more than 7 points, but don't want to commit to any specific number" score.

I can't say I recognize those two song titles, but it's possible you posted them and I just don't remember the song name. I'll try looking them up tomorrow and let you know.

Extra anecdotes and links.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miNyynR8cNY
I finally checked, and I evidently actually did bring it up already (without linking), but Synchrocyclotron was the first thing i watched from Kaf. There are finally a couple of other covers of it out there now, but none actually match hers despite being great in their own right. This is a kind of song spoiler here but one that you probably won't understand until you hear it. Kaf nails that last "ta?" in a way only she can, sounding basically exactly halfway between a chord change and an inquisitive question, and it shows especially compared to other covers. It's deceptive how difficult actually pulling that off is. It's not an inherent "Kaf" song like the real, Kanzaki Iori-composed ones are and can't compete with them, but it's a song that nevertheless allowed her to play to her strengths really well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kzZtRpoBGY
bin is as far as you can get from any other Kaf song, cover or otherwise. It's more the kind of thing you'd expect to hear covered by someone like Ryushen instead (which she did). Unexpectedly though, it was also a great fit for Kaf. Ryushen's cover doesn't really deliver so Kaf's is also easily my favourite for it too. I was exploding when I was watching the live premiere for it, impulse subscribed to the original composer, etc etc. bin is culture.

Incidentally, Ryushen has also covered No Doubt, and more recently Tenjin Kotone too, but they failed to win me over enough to ever post them. Aer's version really blows them out of the water. It's surprising that hers differs so much from them as well as the original, because her version feels like exactly what the song needed to sound like in the first place. I'm excitedly hoping she has genuine prospects of getting a lot of attention because of it.

Isekai Jouchou - Diorama Drama: 6.3; I still like her voice, but it's nothing compared to Housenka. Which I think I want to raise to a 9, but I suppose that's not terribly relevant right now.

Kaf - SynchroCyclotron Spiritualizer: 6. Sorry, as much as you like it, I really want to give it a higher score but I'm not really vibing with it tonight.

Kaf - Bin: 10. Though I'm surprised one of your earlier posts seemed to imply this song was less serious than the ones that preceded it? Like I can't even decide what the bleakest line from Bin is--though "my existence itself may be a sin" is a pretty good pick.

Also while the song itself may be funkier than usual for Kaf, I feel most of the songs I've heard from her tend to be sad and/or angry enough that the lyrics work for her.

Blunt misery with a groovy beat sung by last topic's winner; I highly doubt you could have found a song more appropriate for this topic. While this isn't a formal topic and there is no actual way to win it, I think I can definitively say that--after over six months--you somehow found a way to win.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqN_kpKnfco

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KH2gc11XQU

Monokaki Aer - No Doubt: 8; I was a bit worried how the song would fare coming immediately after Bin, but it was still quite good.

And now, a short break. Do forgive the minimal amount of songs listened to tonight, but I want a little distance between the winning song and Hibiki's...

but yeah i didn't directly say this before since i didn't want to compromise synchro's chances but bin is by far my actual favourite kaf cover period, and synchro is my favourite kaf take on a song. i more or less expected things to pan out this way, and I'm still glad they did

also, probably a very good call on the delay before diving into the ao stuff. the first one is a very acquired taste of a song. her cover of it is actually spot-on for what they're going for with it, but it may not necessarily seem that way.

another thing on a "... did i ever post this?" note, this

Meelin - Merci Lou
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxEtU5fvHgg
this person just posted a new video for the first time in basically forever and it reminded me of this song, which was the one other thing from them I've watched. it was in the same video contest as ruri's cover of uh... tsumi no namae and came second in the music category (which ruri won). a vtuber fan (he's also been a fan of ruri's since before that contest) who happens to have his own avatar actually got third with an original rap over some royalty free bgm... it wasn't a very competitive category. that YUGAREY guy who I posted that endearingly bad ECHO cover of was also in that and honestly I'm surprised he didn't place. but yeah. as is sadly par for the course for entrants in that competition, she's very much a failed vtuber, and an international one at that. also has a bilibili account except somehow it's even more unsuccessful. i was surprised to find that she's still around at all. she has a very... straightforward aura, i feel, and it's a shame nobody recognised that.

a comment accompanying a translation of its lyrics was what ultimately made me decide to post it

Hibiki Ao - Kuusou Seikatsu: 6.3; somehow, the opening feels like Persona music to me--it drops that sort of style entirely once the actual song starts, which is odd.

Hibiki Ao - Miren Record: 7

Sora - Miren Record: Also 7; I think the song fits her better than Hibiki, so I'd probably place this one over the cover in any actual ranking... but I have an established bias in favor of Hibiki Ao that makes it closer than it should actually be.

...fine, give the original a few extra tenths of a point (probably 7.5), though I'm not entirely pleased about admitting that.

Crim Nanakusa - #e_Veryone: 5.2-ish. It's a bit repetitive, even at only a minute long.

Midy - #e_Veryone: 6.99. I think the deeper voice worked much better and I'll take lyrics I can't make out over endlessly repeating "Peperoncino".

Cat - #e_Veryone: 6.4.

I'm going to have to wait a bit to get into the longer Souya Ichika video, so...

Meelin - Merci Lou: 8.5; it's great, but I had to go listen to the original [well, I think it was the original at any rate] and I prefer them a bit (at least a 9), which might hurt this a bit.

Azki - : 7.5; a cat would be fine too.

i like the second half of midy's song because it reminds me of some songs in gran turismo 3... or maybe 4. there's at least one in particular kinda like it, from daiki kasho. also, the whole collab oddly feels a lot like the "soundtrack" to halfpipe tokyo. sure, they're not forced to all be exactly 82 seconds like those are, but the range of styles feel pretty similar which I find kind of interesting.

With some apologies, I'll get back on topic tomorrow.

Saturday, I was needed at another music topic and had to listen to the full version of Dancing Mad (amongst other, far less lengthy, tracks) which took up all the time I would have spent over here.

Sunday, I just didn't feel like it. </.<

And tonight, I've gotten endlessly distracted listening to the soundtracks from the Namco Museum series. I wouldn't call any of the tracks my personal favorites or anything, but I think some of them have very interesting atmospheric soundscapes to them.

Volume 1 - Museum:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6io8rzski8

7-ish. This one has a deep space vibe; I particularly like the low buzzing sounds in places. It feels like the perfect song to meditate to in pure darkness.

Volume 1 - Pole Position Room:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rME4qH8vTYc

6-ish. It's kinda weird; it starts off trying way too hard to be epic, then there's some car sounds, and then the last part feels like a wedding march to me. As a "you're going to play an 80s racing game now" song, this is a failure; but it'd make a great song for a racing themed wedding.

...why you'd have one is beyond, as is how you'd convince anyone to play it for you. Still, the perfect racing wedding song exists and I have found it and I felt you should know it.

....Okay, I really thought I'd have things to say about more than two songs when I started this post.

Aries - I Want to be Cute: 5; this isn't intended as a slight against her, I think she did as well as anyone could with this particular song. It's just not a song I particularly want to hear.

First, I want people to be free to like whatever they want and be whatever they want without constraint. So if lyrics along the lines of 'I like this because I'm a girl and all girls are exactly the same, tee hee hee' could go away forever now, that'd be great. The rest of the song is just a third rate Chu Chu Darling.

Her performance of the song is fine. Fine enough that I don't actually want to give it a below average score. Just not something I want.

Aries - Planet Loop: 6.5. It's easily the best version of the song posted in this topic thus far

& - Pizza Pasta Pizza Song: 3. I'm starting to think I just don't like songs about food.

Wotona, Nyankobrq, Somunia - IFIF: 6.4; it's nice and I think I like all three of them, at least in the context of this song.

...Yeah, yeah, I know... four songs isn't much. I'm running way behind on things and about to eat a very late (for me) dinner and that's going to seriously cut into the time I'd set aside for this...

Koyoi - Goodbye, Loulou: Low 6. The faster paced, talking-like sections are quite good (possibly an 8?) and the instrumentation is really nice (dunno why, but I'm really digging that guitar right now), but when you hit the louder/higher pitched sections, it doesn't work for me. At the moment. It's possible I might like it more on repeated listens when I'm expecting it... I dunno, it's memorable enough that I can't give it less than a 6, but it'd be decidedly to the low end of 6s if my opinion on the vocals didn't improve.

Somunia - Last Night (Virtual Cat Remix): 7? It's different and intriguing. I want to listen to it some more and see how my impressions change over time. Which feels like it should be more than 7, but once again, I don't actually want to give it more points than that right now.

Souya Ichika Songs: Lemon is easily the best. I'm not entirely sure why I disliked the earlier cover of the song because the lyrics are so blatantly my type of thing:

I know there is no way I could ever hurt
More than I do now

Is basically the ultimate test of "can a lyric ever be too blunt for you?" and I'm slightly ashamed even at this point to say that no. No, I don't think it is possible for a lyric to ever be too direct.

"Onegai! Cinderella" was also a high point; sufficiently cute and I don't have any particular complaints about the lyrics.

And there were some other songs that...I didn't feel inspired enough to look anything up about. They were fine, at no point did I want to turn the video off or try to fast-forward through them, but none of them jumped out to me the way those two did. Especially Lemon.

....but only this version of it specifically, for whatever reason; I may have been too harsh on the earlier cover (Nemukawa Yumena's to be more exact, in the event there was another cover of it posted that I've forgotten about), though I find her version to be not half as good as Souya Ichika's, so.. not all that harsh (it should still be at least a 5, but... eh).

so anyway, today's spotlight shall be cast back onto the members of VGaming

i discovered very, very belatedly a couple of days ago that they'd abruptly also disbanded at the end of march.

unlike Shuffle, the impact it has on them is quite considerable. A lot of them were already inactive to begin with, and this certainly didn't help the situation.

I'm afraid not. I'm not terribly observant and even listening to it a second time, I'm still not sure what I'm looking for.

Lemon - Oozora Subaru: 2. At only 14 seconds long, it's too short to really be worth disliking or commenting on. If you want to actually inflict pain, you need something longer... something like Tiny Toons Rap

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IWzgXagHCc

As soon as Charlie Adler starts failing spectacularly at rapping in character around thirty seconds into the song, you'll probably want to rip your face off to escape the nightmarish purgatory you are trapped in. It somehow lasts for six minutes. It's also, somehow, arguably not the worst song on the album.

FUN FACT: I never knew Plucky & Daffy had the same voice actor, until I heard this "song" where it's really obvious.

...You'd think a 14 second long song wouldn't inspire a completely unrelated detour that technically gives it a longer write-up of its own than entire days worth of songs receive, but here we are.

(Incidentally, don't actually click that link. Or listen to anything else from the album; even as someone who loves cartoons, nostalgia, furries, songs sung by fictional characters, and weird song covers... it's just... painfully bad.)

Buttercup Flowers (Relisten): 7, though I wouldn't say my thoughts on the song have changed much. I still love his whispered singing and I'm significantly less into the duet parts. Still probably ranked it a bit too low originally.

(Before starting list of songs)

Well, even with artists that I've completely written off, it's still quite possible to find an absolutely amazing song. Happened at my first ranking topic with DIR EN GREY; the nominated songs were...unpleasant. Like "body horror metal" or something and I was rather repulsed by the songs--they'd get some credit for being way outside my comfort zone, but I was actively hoping to never see the band again. Someone (with full apologies, I'm afraid I've forgotten their user name, it was a while ago) insisted I listen to Ranunculus:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeN6LqawRB4

Which I absolutely love, it's so beautiful and powerful and I've listened to it so many times.

...Actually, I think I may have discussed this briefly at some point at the second ranking topic, where I was initially dismissive of Ariana Grande but really got into NASA by the second and third (and fourth, fifth, sixth...) listens.

Not that I suspect anything of Yotsuha's to hit those levels, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time for my opinions to do a total 180 after finding the right song.

(Also, I've wasted way too much time tonight listening to other songs. I apparently can't stay focused tonight.)

...Also, that name isn't ringing any bells so I presently have no idea who Yotsuha is or what song I apparently hated?

Hatano Charo - Vtuber's Song: Or V-Chu-Va's song as it seems to have been rewritten. Leaning towards a 6, wish it was longer.

...that would be a waste of a wish. I would prefer it if the song were slightly longer, let's put it that way.

Sakyu - Indoor Kei Nara Trackmaker: 4.3; The song's fine enough, but the "hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey" backing makes me want to shut it off.

- Say It: 6.5. I do like her better when she's not in a duet with someone I'd rather be listening to. Video's cute. There's something endlessly charming about her sleeves being an empty void of darkness and the way they occasionally clipped through each other. I seem to recall saying similar things about Hibiki Ao's redesign, once upon a time.

...and yes, I'm reasonably certain I've seen her outside of Flowers but you re-posted that song today (or yesterday or whenever) so it's the most recent point of comparison.

.....also I don't remember her name and I don't entirely trust the auto-translated version, so I'm just copying the Japanese text directly to avoid it.

- Goodbye, Ms. Flower Thief: I don't know. She's way too cute for these lyrics to work for her, but the song itself is alright if I force myself to ignore that. Probably somewhere around the 3 to 4 range.

And I need a break here. Made more progress tonight than I expected since I kept wandering off to completely unrelated songs for no apparent reason. Not a lot of progress, mind you, but I figured I'd count getting to four songs a success this time.

Also, before I forget again:

LOOK UP THOSE COMPOSERS IN POST #251.

Sorry, Lasa, i wasn't ignoring you. I just wasn't listening to anything on topic that night and forgot by the time I got back on track.

also is kuriyama yanmi just to be clear. it probably wasn't since she got an updated design after those first few ones. the one who also did all the videos like i mentioned, which is also why she shows up the most (actually it's also because she's done more songs than the others combined but that's beside the point and you know, i was trying to limit that as much as possible since the post's not really about her...)

LOOK UP THOSE COMPOSERS IN POST #251.

Sorry, Lasa, i wasn't ignoring you. I just wasn't listening to anything on topic that night and forgot by the time I got back on track.

no worries, i wasn't necessarily expecting you to check out those composers on a short term basis anyway. was just throwing it out there!

Andy Blythe & Marten Joustra

I tried bouncing around YouTube results for them aimlessly for an hour or so, but didn't really find anything I felt strongly about. There wasn't anything I disliked, but there wasn't any "hey, you guys should listen to this" type reactiions either.

Most interesting:

[it is at this point that she gets distracted by a completely unrelated video on her way to finding the actually relevant links]

Why yes, I would like to watch a subtitled video of a VTuber playing "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", thank you suggested videos!

[sometime later]

Right, right, Blythe & Joustra. The most interesting track has to be Scatterbrain:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj2XBkejkMA

It's...unique. I also like that they went from composing music for Disney videogames and somehow got a song on an actual Disney Channel. I'm not sure how high a score I'd actually give it ("more than 6, but not more than 7" sounds about right?), but it's very attention grabbing.

It actually reminds me quite a bit of music from The Neverhood:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nfqrfy7VFqo&list=PLd1x_hw_n9fot9uq9hlGJFba66I85mJLr&index=5&t=0s

...okay maybe that's not the best example in terms of similarity, but it's always been my favorite song from the soundtrack. It's like this somehow even more retro version of "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On" , only with no lyrics except for faint screaming throughout the second half of the song. It's wonderful.

Second best would probably be Andy's Neighborhood from Toy Story 2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY24EaNOyTQ

Which isn't super amazing (low-ish 6 range), but it's got this "retro cartoon party" aesthetic, like it's the type of swing jazz music that would play at a party thrown for Mickey Mouse.

Or more accurately the type of music that should be played instead of the House of Mouse theme.

https://tubedubber.com/?q=Edofl2MH98I:rY24EaNOyTQ:0:100:0:0:1

Like, that works perfectly and I'm slightly weirded out by how perfect it is. That is a show I would watch.

...well I already watched a few episodes of House of Mouse (best episode involves Mickey getting arrested), but I would have watched more with this theme. Probably.

[Songs clicked but not commented on: Assorted Bug's Life soundtrack songs, other Toy Story 2 songs, Mickey Mania Genesis & Sega CD soundtracks, a few of their attempts at soundscapes (one of which had a nice, oppressive atmosphere but never actually went anywhere and was just kind of disappointing), and several of their compositions for NBA videos. Also one song for a racing video that I've long forgotten the name of the song or the video.]

And I'm' down to only 7% battery life because I forgot to charge this, so I should just post this and run off before the battery dies.

i guess i might as well say it. she replaced almost all the lyrics with the lyrics of Hello/How are you, which I posted a cover of recently from emma hazy.

also is kuriyama yanmi just to be clear. i

Ah. Well, like I've said, I don't actually know any Japanese so I almost never notice when lyrics change because I never knew the original lyrics either. And that particular song didn't leave much of an impression.

And thanks for the name. Auto translate offered two possibilities for the name: "Yuri Kuriyama" and "Kuriyamayan Mi", neither of which seemed accurate.

Yanmi - Human: 6.5. It feels like a song I should have a lot to say about, but I just kinda stare blankly at the screen unable to find anything.

Masyu & Meu - Machigaisagashi: 6.3; they both have good voices and it's a nice song.

Yoruno Yui - Platonic Love: 7; hey, it's her again! After that weirdness of her being very familiar even though you apparently hadn't posted anything of hers, I listened to quite a few songs from her channel in hopes of finding some reason I'd recognize her... but none of the songs were familiar.

But now we're kinda going in a circle because this particular song was one of the songs I listened to during that period, so now it is familiar. And if I wanted things clipping through things then, well, by the end of this song every part of her is clipping through every other part.

Weird seeing this song again though. It's kinda nostalgic? Though too recent to really be nostalgic, but I don't know what else to call it.

Hatano - 6900000000: 7; I feel like there should be a good joke here involving the lyrics to Violet Hill, but I can't make it work and no one would get it anyway. </.<'

Song is interesting in...pretty much every possible way. The instruments are reminding me of modern Persona music for some reason, it's a fairly interesting take on God, her voice seems more artificial than the other tracks I've heard from her. There's a lot here.

...eh, make it a 7.3.

And I forgot to keep the phone charged, again, so that's as far as I can get.
