It's a watered down Green Hill, just as you'd expect. Maybe it's because I actually am familiar with the original (although, if I wasn't at least familiar with Green Hill Zone of all things before this, that'd be pretty crazy) but this is just so empty. Composition is good because it's literally Green Hill Zone, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Still cool to hear a "downgraded" version, arranged by Yuzo Koshiro no less. This is also probably a good time to mention before anyone goes crazy that Composer is more of an "Arranger" field but I didn't feel like naming it so lol. This will be important to note for Sonic Mania remixes by Tee Lopes, or stuff like Hydrocity Act 2 which is confirmed to be arranged by Masayuki Nagao while also confirmed to not be composed by Nagao. - 135th: Sonic & Knuckles - The Doomsday Zone Composer: Tatsuyuki Maeda, Sachio Ogawa, Masanori Hikichi Score: 58/100 (6.7), Sonic & Knuckles (9/12) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0kssRYUFBI" data-time=" Good foreboding theme with some really good smooth FM instruments. I like the utilization of stereo a lot, and the transition from the intro to the main song/the beginning of subsequent loops is also really good. The main motif is way too quiet and played with a pretty underwhelming instrument, I feel like it should definitely be more prominent... especially since it's supposed to be what ties this time period to the others! Still, it's a very very cool take on the motif, and I'm glad that it stands out on its own like this against its rave brethren. Since there was this whole section of the series I knew literally nothing about I thought it would be more interesting if almost everything I was ranking was something completely new to me. I want so much more from this song, it's another case of "really cool sound, but not too crazy on the actual content." Normally I would complain about the "empty feeling" from the lack of percussion, but here... nah, I definitely prefer it that way. The focus on the repeating motif from Act 1, the countermelody that's panned hard right with the echo in the left, the other scaley stuff in the background... it all just flows together so great.
