I like how so many people get to call things joke characters now but when I used to do that I was basically lynched and constantly dogged for it. For like years too.

Really just shows it's always been about whose "joke" it is.

Lefty is calling Braska a joke character because of his voting patterns. I don't necessarily agree but apples and oranges on reasons there

Untrue dude. I called Dad and Tristam joke characters. They are playable in their games and aren't really jokes at all. Just in here I felt their support base made them such.

Braska's verse in the rap battle was way better fwiw

To me a joke character is one that drums up a lot of support just because it's 'funny' to see them keep surviving while more traditional characters end up getting eliminated as a result. So yeah I would classify Braska as one at this point, now maybe around the top 30 he wasn't, but he has since gained that status, despite the modest origins of just liking his character.

Well if its like most other RPGs Ive played (online and not) Id be lusting to do literally everything and everything.

Actually on second thought my favorite thing to do in like every MMO is just to go to zones and places that I shouldnt be when Im underleveled just because its fun to explore, dying be damned.

I very specifically did not call Braska a joke character because he isn't one. Once Gen dropped him, though, he was clearly the weakest character remaining in the field, which made him more strategically worthwhile to keep dragging along. In a vacuum, for example, Rikku outlasts Braska basically every time, but when people are attempting to make things easier for their preferred character later, the calculus changes.

I'm not blaming anybody for anything because nobody did anything wrong, but I won't deny that it's more than a little bit frustrating to push a character for 70+ rounds and then lose them to one that's been straight-up abandoned.

I wouldn't say he had been abandoned. The round Cecil went out, Gen and guffguy each used two of their three saves on Braska. There are characters still alive that don't have that much dedicated support.

Yeah what? I never abandoned Braska or he would've went out in 25th or 24th instead of 18th. I just dropped him below Auron in priority. Not the same at all. I was dedicating 2 saves every round to Braska right up until his undoing, just not my first one. And the only reason I could afford to do that is because Auron is so strong he's not even a save option H3.

I for one don't care if people see Braska as a "joke". He was never one to me, and I appreciated any kind of support he got even if it was a pity vote or a pro strat vote to oust a stronger character (sorry, NOT sorry: it's all part of the game, and I've been on the losing side of pro strats more times than I can count).

All that said I do feel more passionate about Ba'Gamnan and Yunalesca than I ever have about Braska despite feeling he's a very underrated character, so I will be making a serious push at top newcomer next contest, which could very well be the one I retire on.

I love a good joke provided I'm actually in on it. Marche may not be a joke character, but his propaganda-influenced joke run at the title was what convinced me to even start playing this contest. That was a blast. Maechen I fully acknowledge was a flash in the pan joke run for the lulz and that, as they say, is that. But characters like Ba'Gamnan, Isaaru, Larsa, Gippal, and Braska? I just like them and feel they deserve more recognition.

They're not jokes to me and it's a bit of a slap in the face to see them referred to as such, or referred to as "menaces" that outlive their shelf life when I'm just doing my damndest to save not my favorite, but decent Final Fantasy characters for as long as I can. Maybe some people never tire of saving their actual #1s, but it's a different story when you've seen them go as far as they possibly can and don't care about maintaining their STATS or whatever. I only care about ECC status so these side projects are how I have fun and it blows to have my parade rained on consistently, but whatever.

I think next year I will be maining something different. Red Mage has kind of worn out his/her welcome what with no one wanting to jump in on the fun ever.

Maybe I'll main a character I love, is popular, and never has won it all and push it over the top with my zany antics.

Also just ignore the people calling him a joke and enjoy your 18th place finish. If I could get my niche favorites into the top 20 I don't care if people call them a turd sandwich. Hell pj and I needed a lawyering just to get Noctis to 20th (where he promptly died), and he's a protagonist!

The point is don't let them dampen your joy

I think we need a new term for it. I'm not sure if it comes across in the comics as much as I personally feel, but I don't like that only certain characters are "acceptable" to win. Joke implies such malicious connotations I feel. Tangy said that Braska became a joke, despite the sincere motivations, because he didn't die in 30th. That implies that motivation doesn't matter, it's solely a taste based pejorative. Edward is a challenge mode underdog! Can comics make people learn to like a supremely unloved character? Or is it just people who want to give a middle finger to democracy?

This was a big reason why I mained Steiner until he won, actually. Inviso (long since forgiven, just being accurate with history) disdain for Steiner super motivated me to see Steiner excel.

Also comics are why I like Red Mage so who am I to judge.

Also Swordz the real final fantasy is we get Light her chip this year and then you renew my love for Red Mage with one last run next year before I retire to other characters.

Who's calling Larsa a joke? He's relevant enough to be a serious entrant, even if he does suffer from 12's weak characterization.

And if we want to keep up newcomers, most of them are going to be jokes. What serious characters do we have left? I think it's just Ardyn and whatever FF6 party members haven't made it yet. And I doubt any of them have any strength anyway.

Honestly I love FFIV.

Like Edward has always been my favorite too because of Tellah but Ive never backed him because it didn't seem like other people would get behind him.

Darkx really did the heavy lifting getting Edward into position to be picked up by Lea and Lea comics have made me go all in to the dismay of Cecil fans.
