I'm getting paychecks, never owned a bank account before, I heard local credit unions are good, is it true? Also, should I finally start looking into the dumb Chase credit card offers that have been mailed to me like every two weeks to a month?

A local bank near where you live? Sign up for a debit card, use it for a few months before signing up for a credit card.

You basically need a credit card ASAP. And you need a bank account immediately.

Get a credit card that gives you cash back. There are free cards that give 2% back.

Choose Discover bank. They give cashback on debit card purchases.

If you value atms or physical locations, any credit union will do.

Dont get a credit card right now. It sounds like youre a financial virgin.

Credit card is good for building up credit history, discipline, etc... but obviously don't use it as a line of credit but instead just use it for convenience and the protections offered by the scheme/issuer.

Use a credit union for your savings and checking accounts, they accrue more interest than typical banks.

Also start researching credit cards and determine which one you want. Imo anyone not using a rewards or cash back card of some sort are completely missing out on easy extra money.

also to note: monthly fees are low especially if you have direct deposit or just to have money to use on a debit card.

only pay 5$ a month. banks want 25$ a month just to do business with em.
plus they have free black coffee and popcorn every visit.

The big ones are usually the ones you can't trust, especially Wells Fargo

Depends on the bank. Some will waive fees as long as you deposit X amount each month, or make Y number of transactions.

Choice is between a credit union or a local bank, weird how my local bank has higher ratings though. Or should I do Ally bank?

Also, wtf is a CD?

Certificate of Deposit, kind of like a safe investment for interest.

Worry about opening an account first though, just start with a local bank to learn the basics, make regular payments to increase your credit score and establish history, brush up on your research, then make your decisions to use a credit union, apply for a CD, etc.

Your bank choice depends on your preferences and how you prefer to manage your finances. Ask yourself:

- How much do I rely on cash? ATM?
- Do I prefer face to face interaction? Or prefer digital services?
- Do I like to manage cash flow directly or fully automated?
- Am I concerned about the integrity of the bank?
- How important is security to me?
- Am I concerned about fees?
- Am I concerned about branch locations and national coverage?

Most banks waive the monthly fee if you maintain a balance of a certain amount or have your paychecks directly deposited

Open up with a credit union to build a reputation with them. That way when you need a loan your credit union will more than likely approve you.

Go with Ally for an actual savings account though. Don't bother with a savings account with a brick and mortar bank or credit union.
