Lots of older punks blame pop punk but I think it breathed a bit of life into an already dying genre.

I think it has alot to do with older punks gatekeeping the culture and newer punks being discounted as "not being punk enough" and eventually being turned off and turning to emo/metal/hip hop rather than being associated with a bunch of drunks and junkies holding the culture to themselves. Opinion.

Have you ever actually been to a punk show before? There's always plenty of young people there as well as the older folks.

I don't think you have a very good understanding of what you're talking about.

Commercial level shit is just trends coming and going. The underground subculture is dying due to tons of coke and sexual assault and also shitty d beat chaos rocker bands.

Tons of shitty ass knuckle-dragger edge/crew bands pack rooms but that shit is horrendous

It didn't, it just went local. There are still great punk bands all over the place if you're willing to stand in someone's garage with a bunch of 19 year olds and get sprayed with Schlitz.

When a counter-culture symbol becomes mainstream, something else takes its place. Same reason hip-hop changes so rapidly, the old music represents what was old.

Again, my post reads "opinion". You are welcome to disagree. There are still punks of all ages that attend shows, not nearly as there used to be though. You can't argue that punk rock as a genre has not struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, it actually lends itself to the punk lifestyle. I believe that's part of why punk's influence hasn't grown but has shrunk.

It became the thing it never wanted to be: commercial. But punk is a young man's game, anyways. The inherent rebellion and anti-everything attitude prevents it from ever being anything more than an ideal, until reality inevitably makes each rendition grow up.

Drug and alcohol addiction is something that affects almost all groups of people these days. It has nothing to do with punk.
