It's called the cosmic crisp and it's a hybrid of the honeycrisp and enterprise apples which are also hybrids in of themselves.

What the hell? It may taste good, but this is going to be either be a godsend or a nightmare when it comes to cooking as some apples work better in certain recipes than others.

Overhybridized doesn't make sense from a plant breeding standpoint, like at all.

More like it's a 4-way cross between the 4 parents of it's parent hybrids.

New varieties of apples are created by making hybrids of existing varieties of apples. There is no such thing as "overhybridizing" them.

If they are replacing red delicious apples it shouldn't matter for recipes. Since specifically calling for a red delicious apple would be a pretty good indication that a recipe shouldn't be used.

there are new apple varieties all the time, maaaaaan. some recent stand-outs (if u ask me, a produce clerk) include kanzi and rave.

juicii & envy & evercrisp, booooooring.

the red delicious doesn't deserve the produce stand real estate tbh.

I haven't seen any kanzi apples yet and evercrisp is becoming more common than red delicious in my area.

I'm not sure if this is a dig on assumed recipe quality or red delicious apples but there's going to be times when you're going to need red delicious apples. They're not overly juicy and are not sweet but not full on Granny Smith sour either which makes them ideal for cider or tart pastries.
