But who specifically is supposed to be teaching this?

How am I suppose to reverse all this information I was taught as w kid about how to rape?

.... actually that's not as farfetched as I thought when I was writing that joke. But people gotta learn generalizing men like this is never gonna help anything. I know it's not about me but a lot of men who would never rape take it as a direct attack for whatever reason.

'NO! Teach men not to rape without mentioning religion or the military'

This is why I find it hard to take seriously

what's the percentage of women that say they've been raped? a quick google search says 5%. now if most men "don't know not to rape" that number would be much higher. and yes, i'm aware that rape is an under reported crime, but it's ridiculous to think that the actual number is so high as to suggest that most men are out committing the act.

I think this slogan is ultimately calling for more emotional maturity. We see women as being very studious and in touch with their feelings, but it's because women are held to a different standard, or even a "lower" standard - they can cry and get emotional because they're girls, but if you're a boy who cries, you're weak and you need to man up. Expressing emotions like that is weak and beneath you.

But for that trade off, boys can be rambunctious little shits. And while kids should be able to be kids, it's enabling that sort of behavior through their schooling lives that fucks people up. Women, who are able to forge close, touchy-feely relationships with their friends, grow up with more emotional maturity because they've been free to express themselves with other people and develop those feelings of emotional fulfillment and adequacy. But men are characterised as expressing wild and reckless behaviour, with crying reserved for "manly" moments or for drinking too much and becoming overwhelmed.

We have funny "no homo" moments that can be extremely gay, with an understanding that it's all just a fun little joke, but there are people who have "no homo" behavior so engrained in their psyche that they would be uncomfortable at the concept of a genuine, platonic hug from a friend. Women are encouraged to cry, develop close personal relationships and be close to other girls. Men are encouraged to drink, be obtuse, be the life of the party and be an emotional rock for other people to rely on without putting that same burden on others.

"Teach men not to rape" is one thing. The root of this slogan comes from stunting the emotional growth of boys to the point that they can't function in life without the guidance of a hopeless cliche - with that cliche occasionally including normalised rape, like in old screwball comedies with passed out chicks and horny teenagers. By normalising reckless behavior as the standard "man" thing to do, men grow up to be sex pests and alcoholics and emotionally unavailable. We don't develop the same emotional intelligence as women do because recklessness, entitlement and repression takes the place of talking openly and frankly about your emotions with the people you're close to, and being able to hug your friends without shame or judgement.

Everyone's upbringing is different, but I think there's a lot to unpack about the male experience. "Teaching men not to rape" starts at "don't hold boys to different emotional standards than girls". Girls shouldn't be pushed towards shouldering a majority of the emotional workload around them, while boys are regaled with lighthearted stories about dipping girls' pigtails in paint tins. Boys shouldn't be taught to fear public humiliation in response to crying or hugging their male friends, when girls are expected to be close with each other to the point of sharing beds with each other. The seed of that phrase "teach men not to rape" starts at how you treat kids based on their gender. More emotional intelligence across the board would result in a net win for everybody.

I have to agree.

This whole angle of "Well when you say society, Which 1 specific person do you mean!?" and "Well lots of people don't do it, therefore why should we oppose it?" are arguments that hold so little water Sub-Zero isn't even scared when you swing it around your head.

IF it was literally any negative thing other than rape, no one would be saying these ludicrious non-arguments and being so intellectually dishonest

The implication that all men are accountable for rapists and that all men will inherently rape is extremely offensive and disgusting. The types of language people who push these messages use incriminate anyone who disagrees with that notion under the guise that they're somehow therefore disagreeing that rape is wrong, and that's not what's being said at all.
