$1500 for a project car to rebuild, sure. $1500 for flying lessons, sure. A phone?

I've always been fascinated by technology. I built my first video game for oscillocope display in 1961.

I always have more hobbies and interests than I can really afford. A phone is a really low priority appliance, like a toaster-oven, it just needs to work, the cheaper the better. Cars, planes, golf, martial arts weapons, yes, worth spending money on.

While I wouldn't spend $1,500 on a phone, more than $50 is fine. It's like a mini computer without having to drag a laptop around and finding someway to connect to the internet. You can also use it to connect a laptop to the internet. Or system. Like the Switch...

Only way im paying more than 50 on a phone is if its one designed to be extra durable and they do make them and they still aint no where near 1500. Think my step father paid 300-400 bucks for his. Its a good phone too he has zero problems spiking it off thr floor like a football to show its durability when hes recommending it to someone.

His first one did get a cracked screem after like 5 years though but it fell from a laddaer like 12 feet screen first on the corner of a metal panel box. It still works though.

I feel like a $50 phone might be useless for the most part for me. At least, for what I use it for. I mean, unless they have some really good ones for $50. Even then, Im dont mind paying more. Like I said, $1,500 is out of the question. But a couple hundred isnt too bad...

Mine does everything I want it too. Reception leaves something to be desired but where I live everyone has bad reception anyways. But I generally have like 1 less bar than someone with a better phone. All I use the internet for though is here Facebook and YouTube for the most part. I have some games too and they run fine.

I think I have a bunch of games that need pretty good internet. Reception is ok on my area. Base has been a little weird lately, but eh. I use internet for a bunch of stuff though. And hotspot has helped out immensely, as well... Also, Im also use to this user-interface. Getting a cheaper phone would most likely mean a different phone. And I honestly dont feel like learning a new one. Haha. Did that with a tablet, and was not pleased... But the phone I have is about $250. And does what I need it to do. I dont think I could go much cheaper and be happy...

I'd say $100 is fine for a phone, $200 if you really want to splurge. Anything beyond that is stupid.

But my current phone was $50, and it works just fine. Good call and data reception (though I almost never use the latter), sends/receives texts, camera takes quality pictures that I can read the text off of labels from, 8 GB internal storage that can be expanded w/ SD card...
Like...not sure wtf else someone would want from a phone to pay $1450 more than I did. That shiny Apple logo?

Bear in mind that TC is Canadian and the phone would therefore be ~$1200 in the dollars most of you are used to. Still a lot, but marginally less absurd.

Personally, my phone retails for $900 (again, Canadian), but the only reason I've got it is because that was one of only two options my carrier gave me for the upgrade from my $20 flip phone that was falling apart after 8 years. I would gladly have gone for something much cheaper, but I didn't actually have to pay anything for it beyond the $40 activation fee and the $40/month for my basic plan (no data, unlimited texting and Canada-wide calling, which is what I was already paying for on my old phone), so I'm okay with that. Though I did the math on the 2-year contract and determined that Bell is effectively charging me something like $3/month for service if I subtract the cost of the phone, which tells me they're charging an absurd amount for service outside of contracts. But then this surprises nobody because Canadian telecoms are horrible.

@adjl

Yeah I should have mentioned Im not on any contract so my phone isnt covered if it breaks. That was more the point of me stating its value. The contracts they were offering were something like $450 down and my bill would be $120/m for two years, doubling my current bill and locking me in with what I now know is a bad company. I also could have paid around $800 to bring the bill down to $100/m. I didnt like the idea of being locked-in so I just bought it outright.

The sad thing is it isnt. Its an XS with 64GB. I was including all the fees I had to pay just to leave with the phone.

And the military has all kinds of reasons to call from time changes to recalls. So, I would have to give them my cell phone number or lose my job... or get in big trouble... I could technically do that. Though, for the Air Force, if it was a recall, they'd send someone to pick you up. So if you weren't drunk, that'd be bad. Or would at least make you look bad and you would lose credibility. For the bus station, you couldn't drive. But you could probably get in trouble as they sometimes need drivers. If you were drunk once or twice, nothing will happen. If you were drunk every time, you could probably lose your job. Especially if they really needed help. Either way, I could lose my job if I didn't have a cell phone or said I was drunk every time they called me in. It would make me unreliable and unable to do my job...

$1499 and it can't withstand a caseless drop?

The more expensive things tend to break more easily while the cheaper stuff is harder to break. Its a strange phenomenon.

We get taken advantage of in Canada for more things. But hey, universal healthcare, right?

I mean, that's more than I'm paying for my plan (plus another $13/month for a warranty, which still works out in my favour over the lifetime of the contract), also in Canada. Cell phone rates get ridiculous if you want data, but you can get basic plans reasonably enough.

I mean yeah what you use it for makes a difference. But honestly I could live without a cell phone. Im bad as it is about going somewhere and forgeting to take it with me

Oh. I couldnt. I mean, I could, as I have. But both of my jobs require me to have one. My one job was saying if I didnt get a new one when I didnt have one for a while, I could be fired. And then my boss was going to sell me his old one. I told him no thanks. And that I would get one. For the military, they have to be able to reach you anywhere. So, theres that...

My new job says you are on call 24/7 but ive never even given them my cell number and they havent said Jack about it.

Thats lucky for you. Both my jobs call frequently. The bus station called at like 1am the other day because we had to go get people form the airport. And this isnt the first time. And the military has all kinds of reasons to call from time changes to recalls. So, I would have to give them my cell phone number or lose my job... or get in big trouble... And Ill also end up with less money, if any at all...

Yeah my job is considered essential meaning they absolutely have to have people to cover posts but my instructor told me all i had to do if called in was say im drunk lol. Id only do that if I actually was though. Hate to think someone got assualted or killed cause I just didnt wanna come in

Yeah I get that. My line of work is so short handed across the country though theyve become less prone to firing people because they just cant afford to lose people. Less and less people are applying and more and more are quitting. I think they said in my state 1800 people hired last year and out of that about a 100 actually stayed.

Yeah. I think they are pretty short-handed here for your job, as well. I think there was a job fair a couple years ago. And I don't think they got many people. That being said, the Air Force isn't doing much better. They offered a voluntary out thing some years ago. They needed a certain number of people to get out. Within like the first hour, they had like twice as many people as they needed. They had to shut it down quick. It was like when the zombies were crawling over each other in World War Z....

My other job doesn't have many people. But they'll still fire whoever, then cry about not having enough people...

Yeah prisons are having shortages nationwide. Between more younger people not having respect for authority compared to older gens and then it being harder to inmates being allower more and more freedoms, noy many people can and/or eant to deal with it. Especially doesnt help everytime you turn around a CO is getting busted for being dirty (bringing contraband for inmates) which gives a poor public image on top of making it a even more dangerous job.

Sorry for the late reply had been my final week at Academy so I wasnt studying internet I was studying my class material. Thankfully im done with all that. Nice to be paid to go to school though.
