It takes a while for all the pieces of the battle system to come together, and it isn't explained as well as it could be (the first Xenoblade let you replay tutorials at any time, so I'm not sure why 2 doesn't), but I enjoyed it well enough once it got there and I figured out what I was doing.

I'm inclined to agree. I put about 30 hours into it, and I just stopped. I wasn't liking the story, the characters, or the combat... So basically I wasn't liking any aspect of the game.

Its okay if you dont like it. Xenoblade 2 makes a LOT of polarizing decisions that youll either love or hate, with very little in between. Its one of my favorite JRPGs ever, but I absolutely understand why others wouldnt feel the same.

I liked it, but it was a huge step down from XC1.
Game play (battle system) was the best part, so if you didn't even like that, then damn...
story was atrocious and the exploration by far the worst in the XC series.

The only thing I disliked about the game was how heavily they relied on skill checks from your blades near the end of the game. I felt like I spend a quarter to half my time in the menus trying to find the right combination of blades to pass a skill check. Not fun at all.

Torna the Golden Country is so much better than the main game, it's what XC2 should've been. No damn field checks to progress places (just gather extra resources or discover some optional areas), no gacha mini game for blades (cause they're all story-gained and only 6 of them total, but...I'll take that over praying to RNG hundreds of times and coming up empty), you can actually play as the Blades as characters just like the humans, and even the exploration is better.
Danagh desert region was by far my favorite place in XC2, and it interconnects to the other regions of Torna nicely. Hated how disjointed all the titans were in XC2 w/ no way to travel between other than by air ship / fast travel.
Plot is still bad, though.

Yeah, switch to Japanese. The English voice acting is atrocious. Most of it is fine, but some of the main characters are utterly dreadful, which is where you really don't want back VA.
Especially Rex and Tora. Ugh....
you can speed up the battle system somewhat with skill choices for the drivers. Prioritize ones that let you start a battle with the Art assigned to X/Y/B buttons immediately available (and slot arts w/ the longest charge up to said spots until you get all 3), and also the skill that lets you immediately use another Art after canceling an Art (or whatever the description is...).
Learning the blade combo elemental routes somewhat also helps, since the final hit of a full combo does a lot of damage.

That does get better with time. The first game's battle system also had problems with starting slow, thanks to taking a while to unlock enough Arts to actually have something to do, but 2's worse for that due to how many extra layers the system has. Once you start weaving different sorts of combos together, it does get quite a bit faster and more interesting.

I made a point of saving screenshots of the various combo routes on the Switch itself to reference as needed. That helped a lot.

Also, if you do have the DLC, the custom difficulty settings are a godsend

You can use them to speed things up by making enemy hp set to the minimal level while otherwise maintaining your preferred level of difficulty, for example. I actually ended up using it to set enemy hp higher in a lot of cases, so I could keep them alive long enough to farm w/ Smash attacks or get a ton of orbs on them for a huge overkill bonus. But it's handy for either purpose.

the switch lite really is not comfortable to hold.

it's too thin, this is the same issue i had with the ds and the vita, i need a grip for them that makes them thicker

One problem the main story has, I think, is the over abundance of fights where you win the battle but then lose in the cutscene.

i went to the one area you start the game at, even though it's weird because that bunny guy is obviously still after me and i just stood outside his door

and then i slept at the inn and leveled up to level 11 from level 5

the fight was much easier

I mean...those sorts of misdirections (in either direction; thinking a fight is winnable when it's not is worse if anything) are only really an issue if the game has items and other expendables that you don't bother to use b/c you assume it's unwinnable or do use and waste b/c it is unwinnable.
Not sure why in a game like XC2 it even matters, there's nothing like that to worry about. Just try to win every fight. Even the unwinnable ones usually require you do do a certain amount of damage before the cutscene kicks in.

Unrelated, but I forgot how fucking awful the sound mixing in this game is. You can barely hear some of these characters over the OST in cutscenes. And I wish it were an isolated incident, but it happens over and over again.

Yeah...I think you were just underleveled... Level 5 sounds low for that point, maybe level 8+ by then is more expected. What difficulty are you playing on?

Btw, make sure you use your pouch items, specifically ones that boost your Art Recharge.

Battles at the beginning are sllllllooooooowwwwwwwwwwww without it, and the game never tells you what stuff is good or not. Meanwhile, by the end, youll be spamming your CDs left and right because of another characters passive skill.

Wasn't that a major complaint of FFXIII when it came out? Not the only one, obviously, but a major issue people had with it.

If you get Ursula, do her blade quest right away, because hers is going to take you a dozen hours to complete. But if you do that, congratulations, youre NEVER going to die in 99% of battles

Also, dont write off the generic looking blades. Some of them have Orb Master, which is the BEST passive you can possibly get for battles.

Literally a tradition since the first Xenoblade game, they even give him a similar name each time to let you know they're intentionally trolling you.

Xenoblade is ostensibly an RPG, but actually also a stealth game :p

The only truly grindy parts are the post game in Xenoblade X if you want the best skells and weapons and gear for them and in XC2 with the damn blade gacha system (btw, after at least 600 attempts including many w/ rares and legendaries, I never got KOS-MOS, just gave up eventually) for blades if you want them all.

If anything, it's a struggle to keep my xp level from getting too high in all the Xenoblade games, and trivializing things.

I got incredibly lucky and pulled Kos-Mos during the middle of the game lol
