My copy of Ratchet Gladiator / Deadlocked is done, but that is the only DVD I have in such a state that I'm aware of. Had older CDs suffer disc rot though.

None of my retail CDs or DVDs have had issues, though I've had data decay on CD-ROMs I've burned myself. Some of my back-up discs from ~15-20 years or so ago have had issues.

If memory serves standard DVDs are supposed to last somewhere in the range of 70 years or so.

Data rot is a thing. Its one of the reasons I dont really care about having physical versions of games. Those discs wont last forever.

Most of them will last longer than the people who own them, though, which is more than you can say for most online services and servers.

Its unpredictable though. Some arent gonna last anywhere near that long and some might last far longer. Better to just accept that everything is impermanent in my opinion.

That's why I started using cloud data for backups.

True, but if everything is impermanent then it stops being a question of permanence and becomes a question of duration. ie, the better option is the one that has the highest probability of lasting longer.

I thought they last decades though at least. Like 50 or 60 years

Given the choice, I'll have more control over how long my games last on disc than hoping servers stay up. So far I've not had any issues with my discs other than some very cheap CDR's where the data layer wasn't part of the 'sandwich'. After so many trips in and out of the wallet the top scratched/flaked off and took my music with it.

Data rot is just hype from cloud based companies. Discs, properly cared for, will last longer than we need them to. That's all I ask for.

That is an estimated average.

I look after my stuff, and it has happened to a PS2 disc that is only around 15 years old.

I'm not sure I've observed it so far. Even the ones with discoloration have still seemed to play. I've avoided buying ones where the color has started to turn black, though, since that seems like something has pretty seriously gone wrong with it. Normal discoloration -- where it just looks a shade different -- I'm pretty leery about as well.

Granted, I've picked up a lot of used movies, shows, and games, so I *might* own some with issues that I have yet to discover the problem.

And the decay happens regardless of care?

The only kinda plus is that media today will likely always exist somewhere in some form and generally be more available to the public.

This is what makes it tough, what's different about that one disc? I mean is it a different region, bootleg, rerun, or anything unusual? I'll admit I use my older music CD's more often than my classic games because of my backlog, but unless I magically find something that won't play on functional hardware I haven't seen anything go bad outside of a save battery.

Look at how some NES/SNES units discolored because of the chemicals used. I got lucky, mine were unaffected later models. Place or time of production changes things.

TBH, I just buy all digital.

I don't really care if the servers shut down, because when they do, I'll probably have a pc powerful enough to emulate the desired games .

I will say I have been "screwed" by games being removed from online store fronts (the tmnt remake on x360 comes to mind), but tbg, I don't think I would have ever played that game again. I haven't touched my x360 in so many years. The only games I really loved on it were Bayonetta and tales of vesperia, both of which have been ported to other systems

Official and standard Sony PS2 DVD, my copy of Ratchet Gladiator / Deadlocked. System can't read it and you can get those pin prick holes you see with a light. Remember, the 60 - 70 years lifetime that is claimed is both an estimate and an average. You will get some that just won't last. I've seen it more often in older CD games, but even later stuff when manufacturing has been improved aren't ever going to be perfect.

Assuming you have the files backed up for emu's. Companies crack down on that and I'm not gonna pay for a fresh digital version each time a new console launches.

He crippled a PC then taught me digital gaming sucks and shall never be trusted. I played plenty on PC back then so destroying an entire platform was not easy to do.
