Lufia 2 is the only one that makes me feel. In addition, I can really get a feel for the personality of the characters... even those who are on screen for only a few moments (and their Wily Ways)

For overall story - The Immortal is pretty good, but it's not really a jrpg, more of a PC-Adventure... just thought I'd mention it 'cuz of the AVGN episode. It has a great story for the era.

...

Lost Odyssey might have the most DENSE story thanks to its rather intensive short stories you unlock.

I want to say Undertale or LISA, but I feel they might not count.

...

...

So I'll have to go with Dragon Quest 4. You get to see the chain of dominos that gets Saro into power

Curious, I considered the story as its weakest component.

For Tales, I would be more inclined to say Symphonia or Berseria.

Outside of Tales, Octopath Traveller, Golden Sun 1+2 and Breath of Fire 2 come to mind.

Both take place in a medieval fantasy setting with a lot of political turmoil and betrayals, meanwhile there is a looming supernatural threat that most people dont think is anything more than old fables

Then youve got the fact that Ramza being a bastard is a big part of his character and relationship with his brothers and the fact that the patriarch of the family dies early in the story

There are just a lot of interesting parallels

Suikoden series has incredible stories for the main line games at least (2 > 5 > 1 > 3 >> 4)
Xenoblade Chronicles 1 has probably the single greatest story in any game I've ever played.

Hell, I even had a 5 year D&D campaign that "borrowed heavily" (....not a complete copy....) from XC1 with Suikoden plot elements (recruiting 108 stars of destiny, forging alliances, engaging in full scale army battles, etc...) I liked the plot so much, and the players thought it was pretty good.

Next in line is Radiant Historia, which probably made me tear up with sadness more than any other game and really gets you to care about the characters by the end.

After those, I would say next is Baten Kaitos. BK Origins (a prequel that came after the first game) is overall the better story and has a nice barrage of plot twists throughout the game. The original BK (Eternal Wings & The Lost Ocean) has a fairly generic plot, but possibly the most amazing plot twist I've ever seen in any form of media

Going back further in time, I always loved the Legend of Dragoon's plot, it was pretty impressive for its time and featured some great character growth by the main character and some incredible plot twists of its own.

I have both the DS and 3DS remake. Both are great. In terms of story only, I'd actually say the original is slightly better (but the remake has some gameplay improvements and really good voice acting, so overall it's a better game).
Can't say why I liked the story in the original better w/o spoilers, but...they tweaked the original ending a bit in a way I didn't care for, and I actually preferred the mystique the original game had vs. the remake laying out in detail the past events that led to the current situation. Not a major issue, though.

I've always been interested in this series but never really knew where to start

I'd start with Suikoden I
- It's got a great story in its own right
- It's where the series began
- Suikoden II, the best game in the entire series, is basically a direct sequel to it and there are major benefits to importing S1 end game save file data when you start S2
- It's actually a fairly short game (I'd say 20-25 hours if you want to get the best ending, which...you'll want a spoiler-free guide if so, cause I don't think it's possible to go in blind and get all 108 stars of destiny on your first try; as little as 15 hours if you don't care about the best ending)

Basically, Suikoden 1-3 are all sequels of each other, so it makes sense to just play the entire series in order. If you were to skip any games, Suikoden IV is the weakest in the series and is a distant prequel (like 150 years before S1, I think) so it has little connection to them anyway. Suikoden V is about a decade before Suikoden I and has far more characters recurring from, and story connection to, the first three games.

"best story" might not be the same as best writing, but I feel like the best writing I've ever seen in a JRPG definitely has to be The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. The gameplay unfortunately isn't quite as stellar, but the writing makes it worth it.

The biggest problem I have with SJ is that the demons you end up needing to defeat the boss of each sector are invariably the exact opposite of the ones you need to actually get thru the sector. It starts feeling very hamfisted by the 3rd or 4th dungeon if you've played other SMT games.

If you want nothing but bad endings, SMT IV is right up your alley since all options are batshit insanity without a TDE style payoff.

I never ran into that problem, though I usually keep a very large roster of usable demons, im a fusion fiend
