Let's start with the anti-inspiration for this topic

Kim Mitchell ~ All we Are
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLsCZo4xLdY" data-time="

Wow, what a cool synthy bassy intro... this is gunna go places!

WTF? Shitty gospel?

After the bridge it even has a holiday music upshift... good for Xmas, shit for rock

...

Now, contrast that to another song with a strong intro
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w7OgIMMRc4" data-time="

It's internally consistent all the way throughout the song, even when the main theme isn't being played you can feel it, and you can even feel the lyrical progressive in the intro. Good song done right.

.

Now let's flip it around:

We have the living pokemon Phil Collins and his shitty "SomethingIntheAirTonightOhLordomon"
-No Link-

It takes like 3 minutes for the song to actually start... that is a LOOOONG time to drag an intro with little pay off.

...

What does this have to do with CCR?

Proud Mary.

Song sucks, brah... there aaaiiiiiiiin't no river people!!!! Generosity is dead.

But - they bring it back with Have You Ever Seen the Rain... their only good song.

...

But lok? That's turn of the decade 70s, what does that have to do with 80s rock?

Well, everything!!!!!! Their style would go on to taint rock music until the mid 90s when pop punk finally killed it. Anytime you hear a power chord played on an acoustic... it's THEIR FAULT (and totally not Elvis :b)

...

There are notable exceptions as synth rock was becoming popular, including this gem
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2gWUIG7iJs" data-time="

It's internally consistent and each of the movements follows the other nicely.

And then there's one of my favs, ohGr... I mean, listen to this Metroid Prime ass song

hey now (you're an allstar)

There's a few top bands... but for the most part 80s rock sucked. Half the bands were experimenting with the dumbest crap, and the other half was trying to ride the 70s too long

Run through the jungle, traveling band, who'll stop the rain, fortunate son, bad moon rising and up around the bend are all better songs.

Only bad thing about CCR is they really popularized the "jam band" thing. Grateful Dead did it first but CCR made it "cool"

There's no reason a song should last an extra 7 minutes at least.

You kind of lose posting Megadeth by default.

If anything, Dave Mustaine has had a career loaded with mediocrity punctuated by an occasional flash of brilliance.

Fun and good, and 80s. But does it count as classic rock?

I should specify that it's the classic rock that sucks, a lot of talent upped into metal and blues in one direction and reggae/3rd wave in the other direction.

Bands I say held it together: Def Leppard, Styx, Guns'n'Roses, Rush, Heart, Queen, ZZ Top and the GREATEST 80s of all... Foreigner

bands I say sucked it: Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton, AC/DC (excluding Back in Black, and I don't think they ever truly recovered), Bruce Springsteen (was he on the drugs?), Phil Collins, and all the various Starships

But at least they're the second most consistent of the Big 4. (first being Slayer)

Imagine not knowing about the Big Four.
Big Four (Thrash metal), used to describe four of the most popular and recognizable bands on the thrash metal scene in the 1980s and early 1990s; Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer.

I'm well aware of the big 4. I was born in '78. I've just never really given a damn about Anthrax or Megadeth and can name plenty of far better bands from the same era.
