Brittany Spencer, a waitress at Fat Joe's Bar & Grill in Wisconsin was FIRED because she REFUSED to serve a couple who referred to one of her transgender customers as "disgusting and wrong"

She was sent home when an elderly couple began making disparaging comments to her on another customer and asked her if she thought it was disgusting and wrong and why they would let someone like them into their establishment. She said "No, i do not agree with that" and walked off

She then asked her manager to ask another waitress to serve the old coots and she was told to go home and ended up fired...

Brittany said "She essentially told me to suck it up or go home and i said Ok, then i will leave"

She posted about it on her FB and the following day she was let go and said she stood by her morals

Tad Wallender, the co-owner said she was sent home because she refused todo her job but said they only fired her for BADMOUTHING the company

He said "I've heard hundreds of conversations i didn't agree with,but it's a matter of brushing it off and toughing it out through your task. She refused to do aduty we hired her for. That's the bottom line in a nutshell"

She then wrote again on the firing and said "I WAS FIRED FROM MY JOB BECAUSE I REFUSED TO WAIT ON A TABLE WHO WERE MAKING TRANSPHOBIC REMARKS ABOUT GUESTS AT ANOTHER TABLE. But i'll always choose my morals over money. See ya"

Fat Joe's said they hold a NEUTRAL stance towards all points of views regarding sensitive and polar topics and appreciate all patrons

Spencer was flooded with support from the LGBTQ community who praised her for "standing up for the rights and not allowing hate to be spread"

She is now filing an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Simply knowing that someone is transphobic shouldn't be grounds to refuse serving them, but if they get in your face about it, then I say she should have the choice to refuse service without consequence.

I think you should have the right to refuse service to anyone. If she was religious and the customers were gay or trans, you know damn well they would have no problem with her refusing service then.

You know, I imagine if a waiter refused to serve a gay couple in this EXACT same manner, the same people who think it's okay she was fired would probably think if the other guy was fired that it'd be wrong and an infringement of religious liberty.

That she defended another customer, and merely asked that another waiter serve them doesn't seem like something worth firing her over. But she'll probably be better off not working there anyway.

The difference is basing it on who they are versus what they're saying, though. We consider religion the former, so refusing to serve all Christians is obviously bad. But insulting another customer will routinely get you kicked out of a restaurant.

Not specifically, but that's never really stopped anyone before. And you know the religious right would be SCREAMING if a waiter was fired for refusing to serve a gay couple.
