Price is a difference since the Apple TV is usually retail round $150. But with a discount the Fire TV is $89. Anyone here familiar with the 2 have opinions on which is the better purchase?

I used to own FireTV. I now have AppleTV 4K. Apple TV is way better especially if you already own iPhone or other Apple devices. It also has the added benefit of being able to act as a hub for my HomeKit devices. So I can use my Schlage door lock and GE window AC units with HomeKit. I bought mine certified refurb from Apple.
But theyre currently out of stock on their refurb site.

If you hate privacy and want Amazon listening to everything you say and sharing your data with anyone willing to pay for it, go with FireTV

Might be interested for the fact I own an iPhone. But not sure I say anything important enough for privacy to be a concern tbh. Cost an performance are more a concern.

The Apple TV 4K comes with more onboard storage (32GB or 64GB) compared to the Fire TV with 4K, which only has 8GB of space.

Both devices support: Up to 2160p resolution, Dual-band 802.11 WiFi, The latest HDMI standard, Hundreds of thousands of apps from services like Netflix, HBO, and others and Their own remote controls, which let you navigate the on-screen experience using buttons or your voice leveraging Siri on the Apple TV, and Alexa on the Fire TV.

The Apple TV supports sound systems up to Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround. The more affordable Amazon Fire TV with 4K actually goes a step further and supports Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround, as well as Dolby Atmos, which Dolby pushes as its most immersive audio system. The Apple TV 4K will get Dolby Atmos support later this year.

This might be a deciding factor for many people, especially those who already own HDR-capable TVs. The Apple TV 4K supports both HDR 10 and Dolby Vision HDR standards, whereas the Amazon Fire TV with 4K only supports the HDR 10 standard.

Here's the difference: Most current HDR-capable TVs support HDR 10, but on paper, Dolby Vision supports a brighter and more color-rich experience. LG and Vizio most notably support Dolby Vision, so if you have one of those TVs, the Apple TV 4K might be your only option to get the best experience possible.

If you're lucky enough to have Gigabit Ethernet in your home, the Apple TV 4K supports those speeds right out of the box. The Amazon Fire TV with 4K, on the other hand, only supports Gigabit Ethernet with an Ethernet adapter; Amazon sells a $15 adapter that works with the Fire TV with 4K.

You can get the Fire TV Cube for $120. That gets you an Alexa device in combination with the Fire TV. It also has an IR blaster so it can act as a universal remote for your TV, soundbar, cable box and other devices. It has a hexa-core processor, 16 GB of storage (which is mostly used for apps, not for storing videos), and comes with the Ethernet adapter for free.

For an extra $180 (2 tuners, 500 GB) or $220 (4 tuners, 1 TB), you can add on the Fire TV Recast, which lets you record over-the-air TV shows then stream them to the Fire TV, Echo Show, or mobile device. I don't think Apple has anything similar.

Apple TV has a remote app available only for iPhones and iPads, the Fire TV app is available for both Android and iDevices.

All sounding good but this got my attention. How do the tuners work? Guessing over the air or is there a digital method Amazon's using?

Over-the-air, you would need an antenna to pick up the programs. So it's entirely free other than the initial purchase.

Sounds pricey for local stuff. Ever used YouTube TV? Thinking of it over Hulu Plus. Insane Hulu Plus locks to one location and can only be changed 4 times a year. So zero sharing.

It is a bit expensive, but it's still cheaper than a Tivo and it's a one-time purchase. Plus it gives you a bit more flexibility if you live somewhere where a large outdoor antenna is required since you can connect it to multiple Fire TVs.

Might go this route. Are there antenna maps out there?

Kinda figured. We don't really play games so might be a waste. Ever tried YouTube TV? Hulu Live works but it's stupid its location locked.

Thanks. Looks like it might work going with the Fire TV idea. Looks like the basic window antenna should work in my area.
