According to a acquaintance there is no need to pay for seating as everyone swaps seats anyway if they are split. Having never flow before I find this questionable as why would folk give up seats they have paid for when YOU also have that option is most cases? So I made this poll because I'm curious and for research.

I don't fly much, but I've never traded seats on a plane before. I'd trade for a window seat if it came up.

Depends. Some people will swap seats to let a family sit together. Some will swap seats if it works out better for both parties. Like, if a tall person wanted my aisle seat, and they had a window seat, Id take that trade.

But normally, its the same class. Like you dont swap regular and first class seats. I mean, you can. But most people wont give up their first class seat...

Once, I got on a plane and someone was in my seat. So I just looked for an empty seat. I found one. And that was lucky. I might not have flown if I had say there...

I know at a sporting event, if it's not packed you just sit wherever is available and if someone else shows up with tickets for that seat then you move. planes are probably not similar though.

mostly unrelated but it reminds me of the time I forgot to check which seat I was supposed to sit in in an exam and just sat in a random seat. after realizing I forgot and mentioning it to the instructor, it turned out I had picked the right seat out of like 350 seats.

Most people don't pay for advance seat selection - they just pick their seat when they check in for the flight.

I tend to check in as soon as I can (usually 24 hours before the flight) since I find motion sickness to be much worse if I'm at the back of the plane.

That said, I usually fly on my own, so if people want to trade seats, and the seats are comparable, I don't mind.

Times when I won't trade seats:
- They have a middle seat, and I have either an aisle or a window. Middle seats suck.
- Their seat is further back from where I am (a couple rows is fine. Moving to the back of the plane is not)
- The swap would put me right next to a baby or small child.

Don't most airlines charge you for picking your seat yourself and if you don't pay you get a random seat?

Actually, you can do that. I have done so on a few flights. Though, most have been full. But on an international flight, it was pretty empty once. And after the flight, all the kids starting moving around to sit with their friends. I mean, we were all pretty friendly. But everybody had friends who were pretty close.

I believe so. Ive never picked my seat when I got there. And I use to fly like all the time... But sometimes, I would pick my seat online. If I couldnt/didnt, I jut got put in a random seat...

That being said, different airlines have different rules...

Depends on the airline and class of ticket you buy. It's more common in the US to be able to select a seat when you buy a ticket than it is in Canada (assuming you didn't buy the absolute bottom barrel cheapest ticket). Canada is absolutely awful for flying. On every airline I've been on you can change your assigned seat when you check in. If you didn't select a seat when you purchased the tickets, one would be assigned to you randomly and you can change it when you check in - no charge for that.

Oh, also worth noting - you may occasionally see a bunch of seats not available to select when you check in, but when you board the flight you'll see a ton of empty seats. They block off a lot of the seats in the middle of the plane if the flight isn't full to better distribute the weight in the plane.

I see. I'm flying with Ryanair from the UK and it seems they have a policy of paying or get a free random seat. I guess I'll find out what the group is doing and just follow them. It's going to be a 2 hour or so flight anyway so not a massive deal if I sit with randoms or if someone asks me to seat swap if I don't pay. I'd probably pass on sitting next to windows though.

It depends on the situation. I might swap so families and friends could sit together. If there is someone with special needs that needs a particular seat, I will swap with them, too. Otherwise, I usually don't swap.

Depends. If it's a short flight (less than two hours), sure. If it's a longer flight, but they're trading me the same type of seat (aisle for aisle), sure. Otherwise, no. I have long legs and I pay extra for the aisle seat for a reason.

I tried flying from Glasgow to Dublin with Ryanair a few years ago on a family vacation. Mysteriously, our luggage had collectively gained 40-odd kilograms since we left home, which meant they were going to be charging us some 600 in extra luggage fees (and presumably the same amount on the return flight). The clerk that was checking us in (who apparently gets a bonus based on the amount of extra luggage fees she charges, which is insanely sketchy) was pretty upset when we were like "lolno" and skipped the flight. The tickets were only 5 each (plus 30 for an extra bag that apparently didn't give us any more allowed weight, just let us split the weight of one of those bags into two bags), so we didn't lose too much there. The logistics and extra hotel rooms needed to change the next leg of the trip around that ended up costing a sizable chunk, but if we were going to have to pay that much either way, I'm glad the money didn't go to those scumbags.

If I feel the seat that I'll be getting is equal to, or better than the one I already have I'll switch. Otherwise you can ask someone else. I don't fly often but then few times I have I chose my seat at the time of purchase.

Even when going to the movies I use a theater that had assigned seating. I always purchase my tickets ahead of time to ensure that I can getthe seats that I want. If someone is in my seat I will have them move. I don't care of the theater is half full and there are plenty of other seats. They can move to one of those empty seats. I picked those seats because that's where I wanted to sit. Besides, if I don't take my seat then I risk having to move again if the owner of the seat I sit in comes along and wants their seat.

Oh. I dont think I paid extra for a seat. But I dont really remember. I think I gave the money to my mom to buy it. We both search for tickets at different times of day and talk to each other when we find a good deal. Either way, it was a window seat, which I like. So I was fine...

Some people just don't read when they're booking something and ignore all the requirements to sit in an emergency row seat. And generally speaking people will jump at the chance to get an emergency lane seat. So much more legroom. The flight attendants usually have no trouble moving people around when that happens.
