Im scared shes gonna get more and more scared of me. I hit her when shes doing things like jumping up onto the ironing board when Im ironing, jumping on the stove when Im cooking, jumping on the soundboard shelf with exposed cables etc.

But sometimes when I just walk past her she darts off like shes scared. I dont really remember her doing that when she was a kitten ie before I started telling her off for stuff like that.

Or even when she pulls down the curtains I give her taps on the head. Really dont know how to discourage bad behaviour without making her hate me or be scared of me .__.

Probably shouldn't hit her. There are ways to discipline a car without hitting them.

Spray them with a water bottle. Maybe next time spend 2 seconds googling how to discipline a cat instead of hitting it.

Personally I would just spray the cat with water but ignoring might work too. Just don't hit the cat.

But, by all means, do not yell or hit the cat. According to VCA Hospitals, hitting only leads to fear and it doesnt work in reducing unwanted behavior.

Hitting pets is always a bad idea. Its abuse and it doesnt even teach them to stop a behavior, it just sends the message that you are a threat to them.

Don't hit cats. It only teaches them to dislike you. Even swatting them for bad behaviour is generally not good

Hmmm Ill try the water bottle way.

How would you discourage something specific ie if Ive come home and shes knocked my stuff over. Pulled curtains down etc? Take her to the pulled down curtain and spray her there? Or can you only discipline in the moment?

You can only discipline cats in the moment, they'll make absolutely no connection with what they did and your punishment.

I really don't understand how someone could hit an animal. Like I get yelling but I would never smack a dog or cat unless it was already attacking me or something along those lines. No wonder why she is afraid of you. Just get a water sprayer and put water in it to spray her when she does something bad. Hitting does nothing.

I blow air in my cats face whenever shes doing something wrong. She really hates it and it seems to convince her to stop, but shes also clearly a smarter-than-the-average cat to begin with.

Toss something small and light at her, but don't let her know you did it. If she correlates her actions to an "environmental" consequence, she may be much more likely to avoid doing said action.

I once got a reclining chair and didn't want my cat to lay on it. So when she did (the first day!), I tossed something like a lego at her when she wasn't looking - she sprang from the chair and I haven't seen her in it since.

All I did with my cat was pick him up and put him down whenever he went somewhere he wasn't supposed to and he figured it out. A timeout in the carry cage/bathroom at worst. He's now very obedient.

I should really point out that cats, and all animals, are not people. Providing discipline works on kids because you can talk to them and explain why they are being punished. You can't do that with an animal. Especially if you aren't consistent with the punishments. If you aren't it makes you come off as cruel and arbitrary. My suggestion would be to employ time-outs instead of hitting if you catch them doing something you dislike.

Both cats and dogs can be trained to follow your directions. You don't need to hurt them, but being alpha to them, and in control can make your life much easier. Cats especially naturally do their own thing, but they will also follow rules if they respect you, and you don't even need to spray them with water to achieve it.

Sadly I have no freaking clue how you create such a relationship, I just naturally did it over time with all my pets (never hurting any of them, or spraying them with water). I did yell at them (not like screaming but with anger in my voice or a growl) if they did something wrong, but I also gave them all a ton of love, and they all loved sleeping on me etc (even my cats).

You certainly don't need to hurt them, and I would strongly advise against it as it could hurt your bond with your pet or make it not trust you, or look towards you for comfort etc.

I guess my best advice is just create a relationship with your pet, show them love, but show them when you are upset or they do something wrong as well, they will try not to do things that upset you, especially if they grow to want to be with you all the time and you avoid them if they do something bad.
